Being originally from the Pittsburgh area, I've experienced a long line of sports heroes from Bill Mazeroski, Willie Stargell, Chuck Noll, Joe Greene to Ben Roethesberger. Mario Lemieux came along in the eighties during a lull in local sports highs and picked up the mantle. This book filled in so many blank spaces in my memory of the Penguins and rekindled my interest in the team. Very well written and it really gives you a flavor of how Pittsburghers react to their teams. Younz will love this book

It was great to relive my memories of Lemieux, and was a quick and enjoyable read. As a life long fan of the PENS, I Think you will like this book of how Lemieux impacted the Penguins and the City of Pittsburgh.

A nice easy read. Nothing ground breaking in here if you already know the story of Lemieux. If you don't though this is a good book to learn just how much character he has. I thought it was a good read.

What a wonderful story of the man and the legend of Mario Lemieux. I read this book at the same time that I watched the playoff games and the finals of the 2017 Stanley Cup. It was great to see Mario in his checkered jacket and the pride on his face when the Penguins hoisted their 5th cup at center ice. I couldn't help but be amazed with everything that Mario did on and off of the ice that built the Penguin's organization into the powerhouse on ice that it has become. Jason Zemcik once again has captured the excitement of the Pittsburgh magic in the sports arena. His books on the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins are a must read, not only within the Pittsburgh sports community, but for all who enjoy the history of competitive sports legends.

Jason managed to carry me back to all those feelings I had when I overcame a childhood distaste for hockey due to growing up in a hockey town and discovering the best player in the game played for Pittsburgh.It is a well written book that highlights the important parts of Mario's career in Pittsburgh without getting bogged down with the ladder points that hardcore fans might want. Discussing the differs between Gretzky and Lemieux and their competitive nature would not work in a book about his impact on the Pens and Pittsburgh.It did reveal somethings i didn't know such as Mario's true intentions regarding Kansas City, I always believed that deal was too good to pass up and the move was a real possibility of Pittsburgh didn't step up.It is a great quick read for any Super Mario fan or fan of Pittsburgh and sports and is recommend it to many of my hockey friends.

I'm pretty old now. I've read a lot. Knowing life is short, I do not hesitate to abondon books that have failed to engage me after a couple of chapters. I must admit that I wondered at first whether Questions of Travel would make the cut.It features two unprepossessing characters, utterly separated - in terms of geography, character, social milieu, race and most certainly in terms of their experience of travel - for almost all of the book. Neither is really loveable, yet i grew to love them both. The sense of each sits with me now, two weeks after finishing the book. As in The Hamilton Case, de Kretser has nailed something profound about human experience - things I have not found nailed elsewhere in fiction. In the earlier novel, it was something about how dealing with an unloveable parent can made a grown child nastier still. In this book - and I haven't processed it yet, it is all still swirling - it is something about being alone in the great world and about how it is possible to function there having no future whatsoever.It includes a cracker of a satire on a Lonely Planet-like publishing company. Forgetting the profound bits, at regular intervals these bits made me snort with laughter.

Michelle de Kretser's wonderful ideas regarding the meaning of travel. Travel as a tourist, as an escape from evil or personal pain or a quest for something more, is all dealt with here in a very skillful way. Laura, the unloved woman searching for a life, spends years traveling from one country to another and then, finding nothing, settles back into her home country. Here she travels through various relationships in a desperate attempt to find love, life and home. Ravi, the refugee from Sri Lanka travels to escape savagery and enormous grief and finds there is no relief, especially amongst those who, from lack of similar experiences, would never understand. The story is told as a tandem tale where life is shown as a journey back to the beginning. The protagonists barely meet but end up in the same place - exactly where they started from. A beautiful and poetic read.

I don't think so. I'm pleased she doesn't read reviews because if she did she wouldn't like this one. I struggled to keep myself interested until the male character (one of two main characters) appeared. Thank goodness for the few Australians who tried to help Ravi settle in Australia. The political undertones together with the subtle references to Australian humour kept me entertained.The characterization of the traveler kept me bored and disinterested until with a bit of maturity she had the gumption to express herself at the electoral box and (I hope many Australians will think and do the same) with it came the realization that she could control her life. Living happily ever after with a man just because he had declared his love for her was not the answer she needed. I found the ending not at all surprising, just simplistic.

This book has two intertwined stories with the two main characters from different parts of the world. Due to tragedies, both of the main characters lose their sense of connectedness in life and spend the rest of their lives floating. One story is very confronting about people vulnerable to those seeking power at any cost including a willingness to commit atrocities, intimidate and terrify the community. The traumatized victims are at the mercy of those who offer conditional help after having their perverse needs met first.I pushed myself to finish the book but it was a depressing and bleak view of the world with nothing redemptive. I've read other books like "Burial Rites" that are bleak and depressing but I felt an empathy and connection with the characters in that book that I didn't feel in this book.

I found this book quite difficult to "get in to", but there were enough parts that I enjoyed to keep reading. I think I have learnt a lot about Sri Lanka, it's politics and the experiences that some refugees have been through.Whilst I could understand Ravi's character, I found it difficult to relate to Laura.I was trying to work out how it would end, and whilst I could never have predicted the actual end, I also thought it came too quickly. Still, a message is there, I think, about the importance of family and having a sense of belonging, and how sad someone's life can be without that, and how important that sense of love is in coping with what life dishes out.I will probably read other books by Michelle de Kretser, but I think I need a break before I do so. The ideas and language used in the book are interesting, but at times it seemed clunky with an odd idea thrown up and then not explored to a conclusion.

My first time reading De Kretser and I'm hooked. The novel tracks two different people and their relationship with travel: escapist, urgent, superficial, unwanted. It is particularly evocative for anyone who has ever travelled alone and for too long, wondering what the hell they are doing here. More than that, you feel enormously for the two protagonists, who dont meet until late in the book. the parts set in Sri Lanka are confronting and are meant to be. I dont think anyone can look at an asylum seeker in the same way after reading this. But i also am haunted by laura Fraser, an unconventional heroine whose journeying is generally internal. as much as we experience we can never hope to express. So, poor Laura remains unknown by her friends and family, but not to us. A beautiful book but not always a happy one.

The writing, especially the opening chapters, completely intrigued and captivated me. But, you knew there was a but coming, the device of short chapters and alternating stories completely wore me down. The book was far too long, my interest long since waned. I lost track of the peripheral characters. Some of the 'stream of consciousness' - as I have referred to it - made me stop, re-read and in many instances decide that it was either profound, or completely unnecessary. The early promise was not fulfilled. It was a chore to finish this over long book.

I have now made it a mission of mine to collect all of the Carolyn Roehm books. This giant volume was my first, a Christmas present to myself and I was beyond delighted when I received it. The quality of paper stock,the glorious photographs and descriptive text make every page a joy to behold. This is not simply a book, this is an experience. If you need a Mothers Day gift and you know a lady who loves flowers and the garden this is a great choice. I wish all these types of books were of this superb quality, but then I guess that's what makes this volume and the lady who created it so special. I highly recommend it.

This is delightful book that should have universal appeal.There is very little text and it is not of much consequence, for this is a book about pictures. And what pictures they are! Each of the nine chapters is devoted to a single flower, wonderfully photographed either in magnificent gardens or in stunning table settings.No matter if you are an avid gardener, an aspiring designer or simply someone who loves beautiful flowers, you will find this book an enchanting indulgence to which you will return often.

Beautiful coffee table book. The chapters are broken down by flower. The oversized book is a great addition to my coffee table, and it's fun to thumb through and look at all the beautiful photographs.

What, I ask myself, is holding me back as a gardener? Well, a few very important impediments. First, I have a family that includes two teenagers and anyone who has ever raised one or two of these interesting creatures will know how complicated and very time-intensive that can be. Second, money is so annoyingly finite, and I am required by forces regrettably beyond my control to limit my acquisition of plant material largely to what I can get my hands on by division of my existing plants, or else am able to grow from seed. The mother of She Who Must Be Obeyed, She Who Was Obeyed First, sends me some money for my birthday every March, and this is all poured into interesting plants in one short burst of zeal and covetousness, but then that is that for the year. Third, I have a tricky day job for "the world's biggest media company" and have to say how shockingly a full-time job can interfere with one's gardening plans.None of these difficulties afflicts Carolyne Roehm, in addition to which she has abundant energy, tremendous taste in and skill with plants and derives endless enjoyment from them. All of which are fully on display in this excellent, I may say gorgeous, book. My wife gave me this enormous coffee table book for Christmas, and what a spectacular thing it is. Roehm brings her designer's eye and vast passion for flowers together, adding to them her considerable skill as a photographer, to create a sumptuous feast of color and texture. For those of us who live where winter largely blots out garden color, this is a wonderful tonic and escape. You turn page after page, and you are drawn into the beautiful fantasy of individual flowers, fantastic bouquets and then breath-taking shots of Roehm's beautiful property in Connecticut. It is expensive, but worth it if you have a mind to splurge a bit. It's cheaper than a trip to Hawaii, after all.

If you are a flower lover, artist, or just appreciate the lovliness of nature, this is the book for you. The pictures are wonderful.Carolyne Roehm has done it again with her classic style. I highly recommend this book. It would make a fine gift, too. Prompt shipping and good packing insure one of a great experience with the shipper.
