I thought I had already reviewed this book. It is excellent and after checking it out at the library I was very pleased to find it new at such a good price on Amazon. The drawing is charming and the people placed in various activities within the rooms add to the enjoyment. The binding is not the greatest and is fragile, but the book is wonderful if you enjoy looking at old houses. It is also good for research and I will refer to it frequently.

I normally avoid "guru" type books. I've been to enough pump-u-up seminars during my insurance career to know that they all share a common trait: they get you all jazzed up with ideas, then when you get home to implement them, you find that it's near impossible to duplicate the same results. I have been pleasantly surprised by SHIFT.The book has an excellent format. Desmarais hands you some low-hanging fruit first, fresh off the great idea tree. These are quick and easy to implement, and often free or definitely within the budget of any small business. As you progress through the book, he takes you into more advanced techniques, but absolutely nothing is out of reach. The hardest part is making it through the book. There are so many great ideas, you'll find yourself putting them into place as you go along, chapter by chapter.My sales manager was stuck in 2001 with his marketing ideas. He absolutely did not see the value in any kind of digital effort until he saw the things I was doing after reading SHIFT. This is the most stubborn man I know, who refused to accept any ideas outside of his own. If he can make the SHIFT, anyone can. I've been an advisor specializing in retirement for fifteen years. Shift is a great trove of useful knowledge for the insurance or Financial Advisor looking to help more of their clients and grow their practice. The book is broken down into useful project sections and you can pick and choose which fits your style. Projects are broken down into action steps that can be implemented as soon as today, in some cases.From personal experience, I read two that I definitely know will work as soon as you put them into place. And it was great to read about a technique that an acquaintance at my company was using, it answered a lot of questions. The only way this will not help is if you don't try and implement one of these action plans and stick with it. So, if you want to impact your practice in a positive way, this would be a really useful tool.

Nothing less than expected from Jeremiah. His relentless curiosity, unstoppable experimentation and his bulletproof integrity in doing exactly as he advises others to do is what makes this collection of gems so invaluable. I found it really hard to put this book down, but followed his instructions anyway ("when you find something you like, put the book down and try it, seriously"). Not surprisingly I started getting results for my business and a few surprising personal results as well. Some authors write to sell books, some authors write to generate business for their company, and then there are a rare few who simply want to share everything they've learned and give it away. Do they know it will return dividends to them personally. 100%. But it is why they care to share what they've learned that shines through in this book. You can feel the excitement and passion he has for the work he does dripping from each page, and the hope and care for your results that drive his committed writing. I have two major regrets about this book: One is that feeling you get when you read a classic and you wish you had written the book yourself (not because you can, but because of what it would enable for you in your life if you already had the wisdom to share what's in these pages). Second is the fact that I'm reading this only now, at this age. This should be prescribed reading for every college grad or new recruit even thinking about a career in sales, and especially financial services sales. If, like me, you happen to be a little older, don't delay: READ THIS BOOK NOW, as it will change the way you run your business by tomorrow morning.

Read how Richard Proenneke built his cabin by hand and thrived (mostly alone) in the bush.What This Book Is:- An important introduction to Richard Proenneke's story- Heavily edited (I would even say rewritten)- A pleasant, easy read (goes great with the 2-part documentary that airs on PBS)- Easy to get your hands on very quicklyWhat This Book Is Not:- Richard Proenneke's authentic journals, in his OWN words- Proenneke's story told in his own voiceI was captivated after watching the 2-part PBS documentary, "Alone in the Wilderness". So, I got hold of this book ("One Man's Wilderness"), as soon as possible. On reading, I was prepared to award a 5 stars. That is, until I read "The Early Years (The Journals of Richard L. Proenneke, 1967-1973)". Because then I realized how different "One's Man Wilderness" is from Proenneke's own writings.We get a much better sense of who Proenneke was by reading his own words in "The Early Years". We get a broader picture over several years (558 pages), versus a little more than one year (224 pages). The downside with "The Early Years" is that it seems to be available only from Alaska Geographic. Sure, you won't get "The Early Years" with free Prime shipping. I received mine in about 10 days and it was well worth the wait. "One Man's Wilderness" was still intriguing after seeing the 2-part documentary on PBS. It's just that "The Early Years" authentic and true to the man.Bottom Line:- I would rate this book ("One Man's Wilderness") 3.5 stars if I could- I would rate "The Early Years" 5 stars, hands down- I recommend this book as an easier, quicker read. Many folks are more comfortable with 200+ pages than 500+- I recommend "The Early Years" for a more authentic, deeper telling of the story- Proenneke's story is a classic Alaskan/American/man-vs-nature tale of independence and ingenuity. Don't miss it.

Seeing pictures of Richard Proenneke reminds me of my late father as they look alike in some shots. My dad was a man’s man, didn’t say much, but knew how to do a lot. He wasn’t as enterprising as Proenneke but I can tell that he had some of the same spirit. I think that my dad would have loved to have done what Proenneke did as he ventured up into the Alaskan wilderness with few supplies and trusted on his grit, his building acumen, and his mental and physical muscles to create his own cabin and living area and trek the surrounding lakes and mountains and marvel at God’s country and wilderness. He journals over a year about the building of his cabin and ???, about the temperature and weather, about some of his adventures, about Babe blowing in on the plane and delivering occasional goods and kind interactions. How much does Sam Keith mold Proenneke’s words, thoughts, and style I don’t know but the effect of reading the journal entries as sifted through Keith is like listening to Proenneke, a man in admiration of the wilds, give report and naturalize with keen insight animals and the seasonal changes, ice buildings and budgings and flowers and berries bursting and curling. It gave me hope that I could do even a fraction of what he has done. It’s really inspiring.“One Man’s Wilderness” ends with a Reflections section and Proenneke hits several nails on their proverbial heads, with his insights perhaps being even more true today than they were back when he ventured out. I wanted to share a bit of one as I conclude my review: “Needs? I guess that is what bothers so many folks. They keep expanding their needs until they are dependent on too many things and too many other people. I don’t understand economics, and I suppose the country would be in a real mess if people suddenly cut out a lot of things they don’t need. I wonder how many things in the average American home could be eliminated if the question were asked, “Must I really have this?” I guess most of the extras are chalked up to comfort or saving time.” And “I’ve seen grown men pick at food. They can’t be hungry in the first place. Or maybe their food has been too fancy and with all the choices they’ve had, they don’t really know what they enjoy anymore.” As brief as his reflections are at the end of the book they ring with the clarity and cleanness of the wilderness to which Proenneke gave his heart and so supplied us with a different art.

I first learned of Richard Proenneke by watching a PBS program. Desiring to learn more of his adventure I purchased this book which I read in one sitting. As a retired wildlife biologist, I share with Mr. Proenneke the love of wildlife, being in the woods and all that goes along with it. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to take on such an adventure then come along and share his journey. Having read this book now twice, I feel like Mr. Proenneke is an old friend. I intend to visit him often - for me, reading of his adventure is like comfort food for my soul. Money well spent and I recommend this book to anyone who loves the out-of-doors.

My girlfriend saw this book at Nordstrom months ago and mentioned how much she wanted it. Each time we'd go there, she'd leaf through the book. It would've cost us over $20 + tax to pay the full price, but it was cheaper here on Amazon. This along with other gifts for her came perfectly in time for Valentine's Day, so kudos to Amazon. The book itself is amazing! The illustrations are unique and the coloring is vibrant. It's one of those coffee table books/conversation pieces perfect for the home. Although the book wasn't packaged in any wrapping or anything, the book surprisingly came in PERFECT condition. My girlfriend was pleasantly surprised because she hates books and stationary items that come bent. Although my girlfriend is huge on music, she isn't a snob, so she really appreciated the book for what it is… Anything with Nirvana in it and she'll love it.

this book is amazing, ricardo cavolo is one of my favorite current artists. my only regret is that i tried to take a barcode sticker off the back and some of the uncoated cover ripped :( the book is chock full with amazing illustrations on every page!!

This one, she has informed me, is fun to read and helpful.The format is simple, easy to navigate, and appropriate for kids over the age of 13. The materials is well organized and easy to use. She actually helps tutor foreign exchange students on the English language and uses this book as a guide for some of her private classes. She thoroughly enjoys how easy it is to use and has recommended it to a few of her friends who are working on their English. One French girl is doing very well with the book and a Chinese boy is also finding it very interesting.It's very basic in the fact that it focuses on frequently used words and phrases. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for for my daughter, but she enjoys it nevertheless. She especially enjoys using it during her English courses with foriegn exchange children. And I think that's basically what it was created for. It'd be a good guide for kids just beginning to learn about idioms. But it's also a good guide for people attempting to learn the English language.Overall for a little more than $2.00 it was a really good buy. Would I buy it again? Perhaps for a foriegn exchange student, but I don't think I'd buy it for a writing-loving person who just wants more guides to proper writing.

Aaron Hartzler grew up in an extremely conservative Christian family that did not have a tv, go to movies or listen to music. Even contemporary Christian rock because "you can't mix God's words with the Devil's beat." However, as he gets older he begins to question these beliefs. He begins to love rock music because it makes him feel happy and he can't understand how that can be a sin. Aaron participates in church services, teaches Good News children's group, acts in his Christian private school 's elaborately staged dramas all the while questioning the logic of his parents' strongest held beliefs, but ultimately finding his own way to peace and understanding with his family. All this is presented in a humorous (I can't count how many times I laughed out loud.) and sincere way to become one of the best memoir of "finding religion" that I have ever read.I also grew up in a religious Christian family and though my parents, thankfully, weren't so strict, I have often come into contact with people who believe in the ways of Aaron's parents and school administration. I could so identify with Aaron because his reaction to so much of what he saw in his life was my reaction. I often felt I was reading a more articulate version of my experience. The book is extremely well written for someone who doesn't have a background in writing (He's an actor and musician), but he manages to express so much of what I felt as a teenager in an engaging and intelligent way. I had and to this day, have many of the same questions that Aaron grappled with: if God knows every decision we will make before we are born, then why give us free will, if Jesus turned water to wine, then why is it not allowed to drink a glass of wine, how can a serial killer who asks for salvation days before execution make it into heaven while a good person in the jungles of Africa who didn't have the luck to hear about the Gospel won't make it into heaven to name a few. Aaron didn't really have anyone to whom he could turn to ask questions. Aaron, today an out homosexual as far as I have been able to understand in the book's press, grapples with sexual identity, although that is more or less only hinted at in this book. I get the feeling that that will be the subject of a sequel to this book. I would be very interested in reading this story and how his family accepted this.I would recommend this book to teens and adults alike, religious and non-religious because it is such a well written journey of faith. Even though Aaron ultimately rejects his parents' version of Christianity, he is never bitter or derisive.

Contrary to the blurb on the cover, this has nothing to do with "growing up gay." The author is firmly heterosexual throughout the book (which takes him as far as college). I kept waiting for him to discover his gay sexuality, but no luck, other than his occasional expressions of curiosity and admiration for well-muscled young men. It's quite well written, and gives a good description of life in a cult so extreme that movies and TV are forbidden and Christian rock is looked on as a tool of Satan. The high (or low) point in the book comes when the father beats his son and then asks forgiveness: not for the beating but for the sin of anger. And he invites the son to beat him in return! I'll draw the curtain of modesty on this scene. At the end of the book the young man is cheerfully headed off to Bible college. In a brief postscript he talks about having rejected his abusive family and crazy religion, but this was apparently only years later.

This book is a revelation for me. I mean, I saw myself in these pages, I relived parts of my own childhood between these lines. So much of it was familiar to me to such a high degree that I would cringe, or smile, as the memories rose up all around me. I couldn't help but compare my life to Aaron's, my family to his, because I can't escape the feeling that I've lived this life. Not exactly, sure, but he gave words to emotions and experiences I don't know if I could have ever described. And the impact I felt was so strong, the connection I made with this text was so real, I told people: if you ever want to know the CORE of my being, where I come from, and what made me, read this book.I am convinced the majority of conservative Christian public will not like this book much. For them, this book will read like a story of rebellion, a willing fall from grace, a continual practice of sin.For me, this was a story of comfort: finally, someone will talk about it. And now I know that there are others like me out there. I couldn't put it down; I couldn't stop reading. I can't remember the last time I devoured a book in 2 days. (Maybe Mockingjay?)Aaron Hartzler is the son of a preacher. He grew up in a (much) stricter home than I did, but many of the experiences I had were similar--my household had a ban on secular music, but I was generally allowed to go to movies; my parents felt that my talents are to be used (probably exclusively) for the glory of God and the work of being a missionary. As a consequence, this meant writing fiction, particularly contemporary romance as it existed in 90's and today -- which is my dream, just as Aaron's dream was to act, and not just in "biblical dramas" -- would be a big NO-NO, as my mother called it "pornography in print." But still, I relate to his experience. Especially to the discipline, at times harsh, but always intended to be loving, and to the constant stream of Scripture that flowed from the mouths of both his parents and mine. There are other theological differences between our upbringings, but on the whole, there was nothing too far-fetched/absurd/beyond the scope of imagination in this book that I had difficulty comprehending (which I think some might simply just write off as "crazy".)Aaron's experience, even to me, is extreme. I think he handled the entire tale with love, care, and respect, and the memoir is beautifully, achingly written from the point of view of a teenager coming to a crossroads. It is a coming-of-age story, and a spiritual journey in a sense--the story of a boy who finds oneself amid the many things we were taught to believe and the heavy expectations placed upon him by his ultra-conservative Christian parents. He struggles with the conflicting emotions of wanting to please his parents and wanting to be his own man. And the tension that builds steadily due to the delicate balancing act of trying to reconcile the two people he feels he needs to be is layered well throughout the book. Kudos to Aaron for having the courage to tell it.I feel like I understand myself more after reading this book. I know it wasn't self-help and it wasn't meant to be therapeutic for me, but in a way it was. I found myself seeking out answers about how he reconciled the two parts of himself, but that wasn't really what this book was about. It was mostly about becoming one's own person, a journey I can appreciate.I look forward to any sequels!

I was really disappointed with the quality of this coloring book.The artwork by Jade Summer is nice. Quality illustrations with good line work and moderate to generous negative space for casual coloring that wont take days to complete one page. By that, I mean that these are not zentangle or Johanna Basford detailed images. However, the illustration themes are pretty basic. Lots of flowers, hearts, birds, stars and planets, some sweets, paisley patterns. Sometimes a strange mish-mash of flowers, planets, and donuts together. It's probably not easy illustrating 50 quotes and keeping the themes varied.I feel the quotes and inspirational messages are also a bit basic and unimaginative. Some are self-motivational, some are meant to be colored and given to someone. Several themes have been repeated multiple times, such as “Love yourself” and “Always be yourself” and “Never stop being yourself.”I have typed out all of the phrases, and you can find them at the END of my review.My biggest beef with this coloring book: The paper is COMPLETE RUBBISH. It's a very porous paper. Although it's a bit thicker than newsprint, it has a similar feel to newsprint. The paper is dull off-white, not bright white, and not smooth. I would compare it to the quality of paper in a children's cartoon coloring book from the dollar store. I think this paper would be okay for coloring with crayons or MAYBE soft colored pencils. I think even soft lead colored pencils would possibly tear the paper. I worry that any type of marker or pen would disintegrate the paper, and definitely bleed through.Each coloring page is printed in SOLID BLACK on the back. How is that going to stop bleed-through? It wont. If anything, the solid black color blocking on the back of each coloring page makes the front of the page look more dull off-white.I did a few test coloring swatches on a page.Alcohol ink marker - bled through the back, even through the black ink on the back of the page.Crayola marker - bled through, but took coloring over the same area 2 or 3 times before it bled onto the next page.Zig watercolor marker - bled throughSharpie - bled throughPrismacolor colored pencil - area colored looked like it was colored with a crayon, due to the porous nature of the paper. Took quite a lot of pressure to get a solid looking colored swatch.Castle Art colored pencils - same results as PrismacolorLast complaint: You can't tear out the pages easily. The inside margin is almost nonexistent, with very little space between the page illustrations and the binding. There are not any page perforations to tear out the pages.Final thoughts: This would be a good coloring page for a child or teen. If you are an adult hobby colorist, you probably wont be happy with it. I purchased another one of Jade Summer's coloring books, and the quality of that one was the same. Although Jade Summer's artwork is very nice, and I have several of her books on my wish list, I wont be buying more. The paper quality is a deal breaker for me. I love coloring. I love adult coloring books. However many I have found to be so tiny tiny and intricate, it was hard for me to color with my disabilities. While I’ve done some, it can take hours, days, or even weeks to finish one page. Recently I’ve been in a health rut so ordered this book for its positive uplifting expressions and help pass the time. I also love how the back side of th pages are black so you can use markers without bleeding. The book also comes with a free digital copy (instructions to download in book) so you can print multiple copies of pages to color over and over. Great value for the price.

The pages are not as thick as I would like but nice black backs and cute designs. Bends up too easily only complaint really.

Cute but pages are thin

I really like this coloring book for several reasons. The first, the LARGE print and space needed to easily color without limits. Secondly, I love the motivational messages (although some are repetitive). Lastly, the designs are cute and feminine.The only con to this book is the black print on the back of each page. The markers bleed straight through the black print (which I initially thought was there to prevent bleeds). Even the dollar store markers bleed through the pages and that can be a bit annoying. So, I've placed an additional sheet in between each page in order to enjoy my coloring experience!

I buy a lot of coloring books and this one is hands down the highest quality coloring book I’ve had. There’s so many pages and each page is fully black on the back of the page so that the colors don’t bleed through. You even get a free pdf download of each page if you want to print and re-color them!

The pictures are so cute, package came fast and worth every penny
