This is going to be about the same for all his Spellmonger books. The books edits are ROUGH to begin with as these don't go through a commercial clearing house. That also means it keeps prices down. If you have issues with errors in books, wait six months after release. I can't because I love the content, characters, etc.. Plot is well thought out, conversations are meaningful and realistic, characters are flawed humans that are relatable, never really bored (pace does change appropriately imo), can't necessarily guess too far ahead into the plot.

Once in a while you come across a book and you can't put it down, but it touches you in some way. This story deals with the trial and tribulations of moving 2,000 refuge children across a continent and the mantle of leadership that our beloved Spellmonger must face. These children are orphans and Terry Mancour shows a side of war that people never truly understand. That is the number of Orphans a war creates.Whenever you hear about an adoption, I don't care how disgruntled you are with life, you inherently know the good in that action. You just can't help but smile because with evil in the world you see and hear everyday it just resonates with your soul. That is what the Spellmonger does, well adopts these children for a short while, but you have to read it to get the wonderful details.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the ongoing adventures of Minalan the Spellmonger in an end to end tour of all the books so far. It's been really hard to put these down! The stories are entertaining and full of characters that I actually like and care about. These books are also LONG, with even this relatively short one being significantly longer than many of the other books I have read recently. In fact, I like these so much, I am willing to put aside my Grammar Police persona, and Vocabulary Police persona and continue to march through the books so I can find out what happens next. Here are some of my beefs: even the author appears to have some trouble distinguishing Tudry from Talry, and in this book, Min's family was suddenly baking in Tudry for an entire section. And I thought it was just me having trouble keeping the two cities separate as I read Spellmonger! Occasionally silly things like the wrong their/there or effect instead of affect occur and I wince and move on. Occasionally there are grammatical constructs that make no sense unless one detects the fine hand of an incomplete edit that could account for them. At least no one is sojourning when they are moving around. The point is, though, that despite all this, which usually drives me crazy, I still have read these books almost obsessively. So this is definitely a thumbs up!

"Journeymage" by Terry Mancour is the latest book in the Spellmonger universe and the fifth main book (not counting short stories, anthologies or cadet novels) in which the protaganist of the series, Minalan the Spellmonger is the main character (the other four being Spellmonger, Warmage, Magelord and Highmage).Having once again successfully defeated the Goblins and their allies and minions, but at great cost to his allies, the Alka Alon, as well as maintained and increased the power, prestige and prosperity of his fiefdoms, Minalan finds himself obliged to support his Kasari allies in their attempt to evacuate their children from the ever-present danger of Goblin incursions. Thus this book differs from the others of the series in that it is not that much a mix of the building of the local infrastructure (of Minalan's realm of Sevendor) and epic battles, but rather one long quest as virtually the whole book (with interruptions underway) focuses on the one main objective: bringing the Kasari youth securely from one point to another. In some ways "Journeymage" reminds me of Tolkien's the Fellowship of the Ring if only because of all the walking.Mr Mancour himself (the author) has stated that the book was partly inspired by some of the values which are embodied by the Boy Scouts of America and some of the proceeds from the book will be donated to that organization. Bearing this in mind, lots of important elements of Journeymage can quite easily be associated with some of the most basic values that spring to mind when contemplating the idea of scouting: discipline, knowledge, honour, self-reliance, comradeship, an understanding of logistics as well as an appreciation of nature.Though focus mostly centers on the quest and the issues associated with it, the politics and intrigue of the previous books are not entirely absent and new players demand Minalan's attention if not his concentration. The crown prince of the new kingdom, the Duke og Castal (who is the son of the newly-crowned King, Rard - I think - the-first-of-his-name), who previously has only been mentioned by other characters and not made a proper appearance himself, finally emerges as a vain, entitled, boorish, arrogant, extremely ambitious but also somewhat intelligent young man.Seeing that the story mostly deals with one issue (the evacuation of the Kasari youth) problems from the previous books are not dealt with (and in some cases even escalate further in "Journeymage") and will probably explode in Minalan's face in upcoming instalments of the series, one being Master Dunselen's undeniable madness and local rule of terror as well as his marriage to one of the agents of the royal family's espionage network, who in the end might decide that Minalan is unable to police the Magi properly and choose to do him in (Dunselen that is, not Minalan). All in all, a fascinating expansion of the Spellmonger universe, though perhaps not the most intense instalment of the series. Recommended to readers of all ages.Pros- Well-written; no awkward dialogue, often engaging choices of words- Interesting expansion of the Spellmonger world with the introduction of new interesting characters- Lots of well-rounded, nuanced, many-faceted charactersCons- A few typos here and there; nothing major and certainly nothing that distracts the reader from the story- A number of information dumps (not necessarily a bad thing, depends on your personal preferences)The Spellmonger universe in reading order:1) Spellmonger (published in March 2011)2) Warmage (published in January 2012)3) The Road To Sevendor: A Spellmonger Anthology (published in September 2013)4) The Spellmonger's Honeymoon: A Novella (published in June 2014)5) Magelord (published in September 2013); Knights Magi (published march 2014) - takes place during "Magelord", but the narrative is different as the protagonist of the series is largely absent; Hawk Maiden (published January 2015) - same period of time as in "Magelord" and "Knights Magi", but once again told from a different perspective.6) High Mage (published in October 2014)7) Journeymage (published in March 2015)8) Enchanter (forthcoming)

Book 6, er book 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 depending on if you count the books that came out explaining where some of the minor characters branched off into their own novellas... was very fun to read. Spoiler.................................the gods are coming alive to help beat the super bad god from being awoken, and this is just a very long story to set that up. For a better explanation, you must read all of the prior books, and be amused that the main character has the balls to make fun of one of the all powerful god, tactfullyof course.

Review

“A rare treat.” ―People magazine“It's hard to decide what provides the most pleasure in this enjoyable book: Gamache, a shrewd and kindly man constantly surprised by homicide; the village, which sounds at first like an ideal place to escape from civilization; or the clever and carefully constructed plot.” ―Chicago Tribune“Cerebral, wise and compassionate, Gamache is destined for stardom. Don't miss this stellar debut.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Terrific. Like a virtuoso, Penny plays a complex variation on the theme of the clue hidden in plain sight.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“A gem of a book.” ―Booklist (starred review)“[An] auspicious debut… [Penny's] deceptively simple style masks the complex patterns of a well-devised plot.” ―Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review“A perfectly executed traditional mystery.” ―Denver Post“A stellar debut novel. The setting is entrancing… Well done!” ―Deadly Pleasures“A gem of a debut novel--clever, charming, with perceptively realized characters… and the enormously appealing Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. I can't wait for the next installment.” ―Deborah Crombie, author of Water Like a Stone“An excellent, subtle plot full of understanding of the deeper places in human nature, and many wise observations that will enrich the reader long after the pages are closed.” ―Anne Perry, author of Long Spoon Lane“Georges Simenon kept Maigret going for over a hundred books. It will be a delight for all of us who love detective fiction if Louise Penny can stay around long enough to do the same for Gamache.” ―Reginald Hill, author of The Stranger House“Still Life is a masterpiece of a traditional drawing room mystery, repainted in the autumnal colors of the Canadian countryside. Louise Penny is a storytelling artist.” ―Julia Spencer-Fleming, author of To Darkness and to Death“What a joy it is to discover a detective like Armand Gamache, strong, calm and charismatic and at work on a good mystery in a believable setting.” ―Peter Lovesey, author of The Circle“What a joy to read a crime novel written with such skill and integrity, strong on character and atmosphere...I couldn't put it down.” ―Margaret Yorke, author of False Pretences“Still Life is a lovely, clever book and I hope I shall be reading a lot more by Louise Penny!” ―Ann Granger, author of That Way Murder Lies

From the Back Cover

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it's a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter. Still Life introduces not only an engaging series hero in Inspector Gamache, who commands his forces---and this series---with integrity and quiet courage, but also a winning and talented new writer of traditional mysteries in the person of Louise Penny.

If you love a mystery series then dig into Louise Penny's Detective Gamache books. Best to start with number one and they do progress in the story lines. These are not Le Carre caliber at all. Think "Agatha Raisin". They are light as a feather and are centered in a delightful town outside Montreal. All of the atmosphere is French Canadian. The descriptions of the food, the town and the characters make me want to move to the fictional Three Pines right now. A murder is the glue that holds each book together. If you want to get your mind off the big, bad world, these do the trick. That's what I used them for. Louise Penny books are a guilty pleasure that serve a good purpose.

When the body of an elderly woman is discovered in the woods outside the idyllic hamlet of Three Pines, the first assumption is that this is the result of a tragic hunting accident. Unfortunately, in the world of mystery novels, nothing is ever as cut and dried as it seems.”Still Life” is the first novel by Louise Penny. The book was published in 2007, and the twelfth book in the series will be published in August of this year. This should give you some indication of both the series’ success, and the work ethic of the author. The book introduces the title character, Armand Gamache, a chief inspector of the Sûreté du Québec, as he seeks to solve a murder in a small village near Montreal. The village itself, and its eclectic denizens, becomes a character in the book, quirky and unique, always providing some background movement to draw the eye. The setting in a small village in the Canadian province of Quebec also adds interest, as Penny delves (a little bit) into the tensions, and friendships, between francophone and anglophone Québécois. The supporting characters are also incredibly well done. From the strange and eccentric citizens of Three Pines, to the police officers tasked with solving the murder, each character is uniquely realized and speaks with a distinct voice. However, Penny tends to rely heavily on exposition to advance her characters in the story, rather than dialogue. Characters thought lines tend to spell out exactly how they are reacting to situations that arise in the book, rather than letting the subtext of their actions or dialogue advance the plot. The style is clunky and a bit disappointing, but hopefully can be chalked up to inexperience on the author’s part. (I certainly hope so, I started the second book in the series, A Fatal Grace, yesterday. I’ll keep you all posted)The mystery itself is satisfying, red herrings and false flags abound. And while the clues to solving the mystery are there to be found, they don’t slap the reader in the face and scream “look at me!” This (I find) is a hard line for mystery writers to walk. Make the resolution too obscure, or the clues happen off screen, and the end is unsatisfying and feels tacked on. Telegraph the important stuff too loudly, and the mystery is solved by the read way too early, and takes a lot of the fun out of the read. Louise Penny does a great job sprinkling bits and pieces around, but blends them expertly into the background. It’s only when you go back and think about it that you put the pieces together. In all, this is a satisfying “cozy-type” mystery, great for an afternoon’s read (and it is currently beach-reading season). The book is generally well written (barring the clunky exposition I mentioned earlier), and the characters engaging enough to encourage you to jump directly into the sequel. I also have to say that Penny captures the northeastern landscape in fall closely enough to cause some homesickness in this transplanted New Englander.Check out more reviews by checking out my blog![...]

This is the book that started my love of all things Louise Penny writes. It's a great mystery, couched in a series that takes place in town where you wish you could live. The people are complex, lovely, although flawed in their loveliness. The primary characters are complex and exactly who you would want trying to solve a crime and bring justice back into your life. While each book is complete within itself, if you are considering reading the entire series, start with this one and read them in order. There is a very long story arc that takes place throughout the series and on-going character development that enhances the experience. There are so many more things I could say, but to do so might spoil some of the twists and turns of the series. One more observation: it is not a book filled with guns and violence and "edge of the cliff" types of suspense requiring last minute saving. While there is danger, and evil and risk, it's much more complex than the typical "adventure suspense" type of book.

Louise Penny's books have been on the periphery of my TBR list for a while. I remember trying to get her book as an ebook from the library, waiting a while, getting it while I was reading something else. I am so happy that I decided to go back. For one thing within the first couple pages Quentin Crisp is mentioned and he is a personal idol and hero of mine so instantly this became my favorite book hahaha! Also references to Gloria Swanson and CATS, the musical. There are a lot of characters to learn in this novel, sometimes I found myself having to go back and find out who the character was again. Sometimes as well you had to pay attention to dialogue because at the end there was no She Said and it got complicated to think who was saying what. I found myself longing like so many other readers to sit in the Bistro and hang with my new friends. In Still Life, local and loved spinster Jane Neal is found in the woods surrounding Three Pines with a hole in her heart. Later it is determined that an arrow was used to kill her but no one is really sure if this was a hunting accident go wrong or a murder. The characters even the deceased Ms Neal jump off the page. Instantly I fell in love with Oliver and Gabri but came to love Ruth's quirks and humor and of course Peter and Clara. You also came to really dislike Yolande her husband and son. These characters are human or as human as they can be.Great read and was surprised by the killer but at the same time it made perfect sense! Three Pines is a place where we can feel accepted, loved and safe even if there is a murder that has taken place!

"Still Life," is the first book in the Chief Inspector Gamache mystery series which introduced you to Gamache, his team of homicide investigators and the people who live in the village of Three Pines. Louise Penny does a magnificent job of grabbing the reader's attention and holding it from the very beginning to the end, so much so, that you almost hate for the story to end. Lucky for us, there are many more books in this series which the reading public can look forward to in continuing the saga.

I was really enjoying this book until about half way when the hero became abusive to the heroine. She submits to being manhandled and his forceful sex (which she believes he would not stop no matter how hard she fought!), then she begs for him to believe she loves him and that she is being honest with him. He is cruel and she us forced to betray her family to prove herself.I don't know how this is romantic. It screams domestic violence -- both physical and mental. I couldn't like either character after these particular few scenes so I stopped reading. The stars I gave were for the first part of the book.

This is an entertaining book, but the plot is getting a bit worn. As in other books by the author, the main character is tortured by divided loyalties and having to walk the line between love and loyalty to family. Additionally, in this novel, the author even recycled the circumstance of the heroine from a previous novel (i.e., her lover is awarded her legitimate sister as a bride or potential bride for his service to the king; the heroine has a mystical gift which caused her to be shunned as a child and into adulthood; she suffered from her illegitimacy; and her sister even had the same name (Alice) as the sister in the other book which contained such similar circumstances. Has the author run out of any original ideas?

Fast service great price

I was not word for a minute I had forgot how good her books are I love my best recommendation to all who will like to read about romance intrigued and suspense do no stop from reading it

This book captures your attention from page 1 and doesn't let go until the final one. I am never disappointed in a Brenda Joyce novel and especially love her historical romances. Definitely a book worth reading.

A delightful historical story. I enjoyed the heroine, she was a great character. I was pleased with the story line and I enjoyed the plot twists. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I have always been a big Brenda Joyce fan but the last three novels have been disappointing. I miss her older work, the passion the heartache the white-knuckled tension that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning!

Brenda Joyce is one of my favorite authors; I own all her books. Also, I love medieval romances when they are good, like this one is!
