This is a fascinating book exploring language through crystallography that fits nicely into the Oupilo experiments. In general the book is accessible - word squares, concrete poems, charts and, yes, some poetry as "commonly understood." The most personal poems are under "Diamonds" which explores the relationship with his father, a diamond cutter. The layout of the poems in this section remains a puzzle to me. As I do Merrill's "The Changing Light at Sandover", I found myself wanting a crib sheet to point out what I felt I was missing of the author's intent.The linguistic "games" that I found most interesting were the classification of letters by their axis of symmetry and the "dripping line" (think of water dripping from a cave ceiling). (Unfortunately the web removes multiple spaces so it is not easy to give an illustration - just think of fewer and fewer letters falling into the next line, always spelling out meaningful clauses, phrases, words.)This book is a major tour-de-force of experimental writing. It will get under your skin. You'll read and reread digging deep to find the underlying principles. You may even become obsessed. Or you may read through it quickly dismissing it as a mere experiment.

Imaginative and unique. This has become my standard gift for graduating students who majored in Chemical and Physical Biology.

I forget what I paid for it--$12? $16? Something like that. Cheap. It has paragraphs you'll never read anywhere else, using long strings of words that have never before been next to one another. It's a testament to what can be done--because Christian Bok did it--if one goes off in a hole somewhere and focuses, and that's a good lesson any ol' time.How much is one fantastic, comprehensible, and yet on the surface bizarre sentence worth to you? In entertainment or inspiration or education? I'd say--for me-- a dollar at least, and five at most. Applying that standard, this book is worth hundreds of dollars. I'm no intellectual, and I'm no freak, but I like language and words, and I like this book a lot.

Great book combining science poetry. Bought it for one of my introductory English classes. Really opens the mind up the link between science and poetry. I ended up writing a paper on it due to my interest.

My view is that this is where Bok's work on chemistry + poetry really started to emerge strongly. The more recent biological poems - living poems made of DNA chains, can be linked to to passages herein on the structure of crystals, and their inherent portal-like qualities. It's unique from assemblage type poems, wherein archival information is assembled to make "sciency" found poems. And it's not translation, where the material of another work is used, as in "Parse". Rather, the material of the crystallography is taken from the basic components of our thought on crystals themselves.

This was simply not my genre of book, but purchased for a Book Club. Overall it was a sad book even though the sisters were trying to overcome many past problems.

She takes this trip under false pretenses, although the pretenses are not her own doing. We ardently want the best outcome for this character, but in the end, I felt torn between a couple of different outcomes, any one of which would have been fine. Such is the balance and artistry on display.Peachy Archer, now Mrs. Laliberté, has a husband and two young sons, one of whom is sick. Her glamorous sister Beth has the looks, the fame, and the addictions that Peachy never aspired to. Beth's dazzling New York success seduces Peachy's two impressionable sons. And her history with Peachy's husband adds to the general disruption when she comes for one of her regular visits. Peachy and Beth briefly collaborate on a plan to get back at Beth's ex-boyfriend (the false pretenses part), but events take an unexpected direction when Peachy heads for New York unaccompanied.The "Almost Archer Sisters" bulges with family: family history, family failure and strife, tough love, and shocking weakness. Peachy, at one point an aggrieved party, flirts with a beautiful, appealing man and with the possibility of forbidden fruit, all the while knowing very well the needs of those who depend on her. This story has a highly unusual balance - a reflecting quality. Peachy's yang dynamically anchors Beth's yin, and we see some of Beth's fast-lane influence on Peachy during Peachy's excursion. This centrifugal balance drives the narrative, pulling our emotions along for the suspenseful ride.Ms. Gabriele takes her heroine on a journey, a richly dramatic one, and she treats the reader with laugh-out-loud comic touches throughout. This book shows the author's power and assuredness with a fraught family situation; it never approaches anything cloying, and holds a ton of promise for Peachy, the heroine. This story soars, it delights, and it rewards the lucky reader. Well done!

However Lisa Gabrielle has a beautiful writing style that turns this simple story into one that you won't forget.When I was asked to review "The Almost Archer Sisters" I gladly accepted, thinking I was going to be reviewing a "chick lit" novel. But this book is so much more. Lisa Gabrielle takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster as we follow Beth and Peachy's turbulent childhood, and touch on real issues such as depression, abortion, suicide, epilepsy and much more.Whether you are a single woman, a mother, or just married you will treasure this book with all your heart as you follow Peachy along her quest to find out who she really is and what life she belongs in, whether its her seemingly idyllic life on the farm with her husband and two children, or the Sex & The City life that Beth leads.The emotion that pours out of every page left me hanging on right until the end, and wishing that there was more.There is also a great Q&A at the end, where author, Lisa Gabrielle, talks about the characters, the story and why she wrote it.For the fans of Cathy Kelly, Marian Keyes and Nicholas Sparks this is one not to be missed.

I loved "The Almost Archer Sisters" and was very unhappy when it ended. All the characters were wonderfully written and I identified greatly with Peachy. This book was funny and heartbreaking and one of the best books I have read in a long time. I would recommend "The Almost Archer Sisters" who likes to get lost in a book that touches many emotions and stays with you long after you finish reading it.

So many authors attempt to look at 'female relationships', few manage to capture them. Gabriele does, she doesn't flinch from the intimate cruelty we can inflict on each other, humorously and perfectly capturing the the subtle ways we punish people we love. Though the sisters in this book feel an intense, perhaps unhealthy, loyalty toward each other, it is tested by their differences, shared pain and hidden anger. As a rural housewife and her glamorous big city sister work through their conflicts, Gabriele avoids any cliched idealizations of motherhood and "Sex & the City" type success and delivers a novel that is real - and really good.

I couldn't put this book down!! From beginning to end, I was interested and curious about each character, and I couldn't wait to find out what happened to them. The relationship between the sisters was so real, and written with such compassion that I felt like I knew them. All of the characters could easily resemble a real family, with real pain, and real love. I enjoyed this book so much and I can't wait to see what else Lisa Gabriele has in store. I am truly a fan!!

I loved this book! The characters each got under my skin and I couldnt stop thinking about them long after I closed the last page (in tears). Their stories, desires, struggles, heartaches and triumphs. What a family this is. This is one beautiful and broken home I would love to be a part of.

This book was entertaining; however not very realistic and very predictable... a good fluff read but there are definitely better books out there!

If I could travel with only one guidebook on Antigua and Barbuda, this would be the one. The author covers activities from the frivolous to the serious; from nightlife, Carnival, and Sailing Week to environmental awareness, and the local humane society. In addition to the breath of topics covered, the author has done an outstanding job in capturing the flavor of the island in photography, commendable consideration given to the inclusion of many locals in context and throughout the contents.As one who spent most of my formative years in Antigua before leaving 35 years ago, this book has brought back many old memories of traditional customs - Cricket p75, and Long Ghost p88; as well as introduced new activities I was unaware of such as Ballooning p82 and motor racing p144. Over the past 15 years my family and I have made more than 10 visits to Antigua, I was unaware of motor racing or that horse racing was still a big activity on Antigua. (We have not made it to Barbuda as yet). If limited buying only one travel guide on Antigua and Barbuda, this one stands out, there is something for everyone.

He was an accomplished physician specializing in ophthalmology. He was knighted not because of his writing talent but because he had performed heroic service for the Crown in the Boer War. And he brought to bear the same "scientific detecting" skills he had written about in the Sherlock Holmes stories in two high-profile court cases—two of the most notorious miscarriages of justice in Edwardian Britain.The advent of scientific detectingThe case at the heart of Margalit Fox's riveting new book, Conan Doyle for the Defense, "involved a patrician [murder] victim, stolen diamonds, a transatlantic manhunt, and a cunning maidservant who knew far more than she could ever be persuaded to tell." An innocent man was convicted of the crime in 1909. Conan Doyle's on-and-off efforts to free him spanned nearly two decades. He succeeded at length "with little more than minute observation and rigorous logic" in a truly Holmesian display of scientific detecting. Oscar Slater's conviction had been the result of prosecutorial misconduct, a biased judge, suppressed and altered evidence, and the "anti-Jewish bigotry [that] permeated nearly every aspect of British life" in the Edwardian era. The case became known as the Scottish Dreyfus Affair. "'Many of the methods invented by Conan Doyle'" and put to work in his defense of Oscar Slater "'are today in use in the scientific laboratories'" employed in law enforcement, as Fox notes, quoting a true-crime writer of the 1930s.Scientific detecting does not employ deductive reasoningIn this deeply engaging book, the author brings to light a fascinating perspective on the logic that Holmes (and Conan Doyle himself) brought to bear in solving a case. It was not deduction. Nor was it induction. Instead, it was the much less well-known phenomenon of abduction, or abductive reasoning. For example, given the rule "All serious knife wounds result in bleeding" and the observed result "There was bleeding," the abductive conclusion would be that "This was (likely to have been) a serious knife wound." By contrast, if a rule had it that "All serious knife wounds result in bleeding," then deductive reasoning would lead one to conclude that "There was bleeding." Even though Holmes himself often describes his method as deductive, he instead "reasoned backward" using abductive reasoning rather than using straightforward deductive logic. Think of "the dog that didn't bark in the night."Criminology vs. criminalisticsConan Doyle's efforts to free Oscar Slater came at a time when police methods were dominated by what was known at the time as "criminology." This was not the modern interdisciplinary field we know today under that name but a Victorian-era concept that criminal behavior was innate and could be detected simply by observing the physical characteristics of an offender. "Where criminalistics, rooted in real science, would focus on the crime scene, criminology focused on the criminal [using such methods as phrenology]. Like many intellectual enterprises of the period, it was inspired by Darwinian theory . . . Darwinianism of the darkest kind." In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fingerprinting was in use only in Buenos Aires, Calcutta, New York City, and perhaps a handful of other cities. Of course, it was a century later before DNA came into wide use as a crime detection tool. In that sense, a century passed between Conan Doyle's defense of Oscar Slater and the advent of genuine scientific detecting.The "flesh-and-blood progenitor of Sherlock Holmes"Conan Doyle had studied medicine at the renowned University of Edinburgh under a legendary diagnostician, Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell was the "flesh-and-blood progenitor of Sherlock Holmes." The man's ability to suss out a wealth of facts about anyone he encountered, simply by looking them over, was uncanny. In the Sherlock Holmes stories, the detective routinely demonstrates the same extraordinary ability. Under Bell's tutelage, Conan Doyle himself acquired similar skill in understanding the importance of seemingly inconsequential details. And he put that skill to work in helping prove the innocence of two men who had been railroaded by British police and court officials.

The reader might be forgiven for constantly checking to be sure that this is a non-fiction (it is) because the story is so incredible and so well written by Fox that it could easily have been another Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. This book, in fact, is a retelling of the true story of a German Jew who arrived in Scotland to start a new life under a new name – Oscar Slater – only to be accused of murder. Oscar Slater was an easy target for the law to make a convenient scapegoat. He was a tramp and suspected of pimping the woman he claimed was his mistress. When a rich and elderly woman named Marion Gilchrist was found murdered, Oscar Slater was swiftly identified as the suspect. A brooch was missing from Gilchrist’s home; a brooch was found in Slater’s home. The police thought the case was closed, only to be told later that that was not the Gilchrist brooch. As the author rightly repeated the question asked by Conan Doyle, why then did the police continue its investigation with Slater as the main suspect? The rest of the incredulous tale is best left to the reader to discover. It is sufficient to say that Slater was found guilty of Gilchrist’s murder and was serving life imprisonment after a commuted death sentence when he smuggled a note through a fellow prisoner who was released after his sentence had been served. It was almost 20 years when that note, was delivered to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with a plea for help. Doyle did not disappoint. The book traversed the crime as it happened, Slater’s arrest and trial, and the efforts to prove his innocence. Did Doyle succeed? Was there a twist at the end? The story has many amazing turns of events – all the way to the end. As good as any Sherlock Holmes mystery.

Being an enormous fan of the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a published Sherlock Holmes author, anything about the man who created the legend arouses my immediate attention. I have read of the times that Mr. Doyle helped with cases, but never to the depth that was covered in the book. It was comprehensive, without being wordy, gave backstory without dredging on, told of events without superfluous content.It was a well crafted tale that wa well paced and kept you intrigued until the finish of the tale. I am a fiction writer, but even I can appreciate the sheer amount of work that had to be done to write this novel, the thousands of articles of information that had to be condensed into a concise accounting of events.This was indeed, very well done. If you are interested in history, or are a fan of the Great Detective and the man who brought him to life, you will be pleased with this novel.Edit:Thank you, Margalit E. Fox, very much for taking the time to reply. I in no way tried to imply that this was anything less than a real event narrative in the life of Conan Doyle. I apologize if it came across that way, or if anyone who read my review felt it was thus implied.You have done an exhaustive amount of research and I can only imagine the task it was to consolidate so much information into this book. I thank you for making this available for us fans of Conan Doyle. I myself as a Sherlock Holmes author, still found fresh information in this about Conan Doyle that I had not known.If you would ever wish to collaborate on a Sherlock Holmes story, it would be an inestimable privilege.

The first third of this book is hopeless repetition. The author adds a bit of new information to a chapter and surrounds it with information previously covered. Then, quite suddenly, the story picks up speed and clarity and becomes the anticipated tale! Wonderful photographs are also included. 2.5 stars for the first third of the book and 5 stars for the final 2/3 = my 4 star rating.

The book is well-researched and packed with solid information. I would like to encourage others with my own story. In the past two years I have gradually increased my iodine intake. Since beginning the iodine (very low dose), I have lost 17-20 pounds without dieting a single day, and it has stayed off (even during the holidays). With each iodine increase, my energy has increased. In the past two weeks I have started using Lugol's 2% (only one drop a day which I think experts would consider a teeny amount). I gave no thought to seeing any changes, so after doing several extra nonessential chores for 3-4 days I realized Hey, it has to be the iodine increase. If my energy is really low, it causes a minor case of the blues. With the recent increase I am feeling even more uplifted all through the day. I tried two drops yesterday which upset my stomach (I then drank a second big glass of water which did the trick), my face became flushed, my scalp itched for a couple of minutes, and an itchy hive broke out on my neck. However, none of this was a problem--other than my concern that it might get worse--and it all lasted less than five minutes. I went back into the book and read that taking the iodine with food on the stomach usually solves the upset stomach. Some say taking it early is best as late-day doses can keep one awake. For years I felt like a deflated balloon all day long. Everything I accomplished was only through a very hard push. Now I feel like I'm up out of the grave, and I am eager to experience more improvements as I continue to increase the dosage.

This book changed my life. I just found out that I have had a low acting thyroid. I tried iodine therapy with a low dose supplement but got little results. After reading this book I decided to try the iodine loading. I did not clear this with my nutritionist , but I knew I had an issue with the thyroid and that iodine was a treatment. I did the 50mg loading. As of this date I'm two months into it. My body temperature has gone up 2 degrees. I was very low .. about 95.5 in the morning. last check I was up to 97.2. Still low but going up. My body fat is beginning to burn, my vision has cleared up, my skin looks amazing and I have more energy.I recommend this book to anyone really. The lack of iodine in our food in the US needs to be remedied.
