Christine Pohl has rendered a beautiful accomplishment. This book is lucidly written, and, at the same time, is very deep in scope, all while being a very convicting treatise on Christian practices. What impressed me most about this book was Prof. Pohl's ability to explain the spiritual and practical importance of each practice she outlines, root each practice in the authority of the text, and give short, but clear-eyed, analysis of how our current culture is lacking and could benefit from each practice. This is no small order and is quite an accomplishment.I consider this book seminal on where the Western church needs to go next. Now all we need to do is actually do it. Prof. Pohl gives us her sympathies and some narratives from her own experiences, both success and failures, about how hard this work really is. This brings me to my final praise of the book, Prof. Pohl has actually been in the trenches and tried to do this stuff, so she knows how hard it is.If you are currently trying to build authentic Christian community, read this book (with others, if you can)!

This went through the Christian practices and helped break apart where we have gotten confused and hurt, and how to heal to build community.Regarding church transitions, she did tend to focus on the pastor's perspectives without an equal examination of the church community perspective and how the pastor may help the church better in that transition. Despite that, the rest of the book was definitely well worth the read!

We love the book. I am leading two Missional community groups at our church and our people are loving the lessons we are learning. It's also a perfect text for Discipleship and Spiritual Formation. The first chapter seemed a bit technical, which was needed to set the foundation, but the following chapters were much more accessible and insightful. One woman said the book has changed her prayer life. Another said its bringing changes deep to her soul, something she's been longing for. Would definitely recommend for any church that seeks to lead its people to honest, meaningful relationships building and community serving.

this book is an excellent summary of a recent study of how to make communities healthy and nurturing. it app;lies to Church communities, religious communities and even families. i believe some of it would apply to non profit groups like neighborhood associations... since it describes such "practices" as truth telling, promise keeping, gratitude and hospitality.it's worth the read.

This is a beautifully written (poetic at times) book about the practices of community that should be integral to every Christian's life, and a featured part of every churches mission statement. In a increasingly fragmented, individualistic, consumer oriented society, it's pretty easy to forget the call to community that is at the foundation of Christian living, but the author gently and beautifully reminds us of the importance of this calling.

This is an encouraging yet honest exploration of Christian practices that genuinely help build and sustain community in the body of Christ. I especially appreciated her attention to the essential need for truth in relationship.

Could book to be bringing awareness to issues in community. Can bring out strong responses in a group discussion. A good read and reread. Brings up food for thought and brings about change.

Convicting, encouraging and deeply thoughtful, Christine slices to the heart of our own ways we sabotage community and points to how the Gospel provides a path to true community as a testimony to the grace we have received in Christ!

Review

Praise for Adrian Raine's The Anatomy of ViolenceA New Scientist Best Book of 2013Winner of The Athenaeum of Philadelphia's Annual Literary Award“Provocative. . . . [Raine] makes a good case that certain genetic, neurological, and physiological factors do predict violent behavior. . . . He argues, convincingly, that . . . benign and relatively cheap interventions could have huge social benefits.”—New York Times Book Review“Well-written and engaging. . . . Mr. Raine reminds us of all the interesting things we do know about genes, brains and the environment that can tilt someone toward anti-social behavior. . . . A good read. What makes it something more is Mr. Raine's contention that violence is a public-health issue and that this forces upon society some uncomfortable ideas about possible interventions.”—The Wall Street Journal“Lively, engaging. . . . A convincing case that violent criminals are biologically different from the rest of us. . . . [Raine] has the research at his fingertips—not surprising, since he carried out much of it—and makes a compelling case that society needs to grapple with the biological underpinnings of violent crime just as vigorously as the social causes, if not more so.”—New Scientist“Anyone who truly seeks an answer to questions about nature vs. nurture should read Raine’s book. The Anatomy of Violence includes many interesting studies, with provocative findings. He also raises important philosophical questions about what we could, and perhaps should, do with what we’re learning.”—Psychology Today“Readable, and at times controversial. . . . [The Anatomy of Violence] is worth reading by anyone who has an interest in violence and criminal behavior, not because it provides definitive answers, but for its value in setting the stage for ongoing thought and discussion.”—Washington Independent Review of Books “Are ‘criminal tendencies’ hard-wired or acquired? . . . Psychologist Adrian Raine argues the biological case, marshalling swathes of findings and case studies of murderers and rapists. . . . Provocative and bristling with data.”—Nature“Groundbreaking. . . . Never before has a ‘map of the criminal mind’ been written about so convincingly. . . . Raine offers us the most compelling look to date at the connection between human genetics and human acts of violence. . . . The Anatomy of Violence will convince even the most skeptical that there is a genetic or biological cause for the violence exhibited by psychopaths across all cultures. . . . The Anatomy of Violence is an astonishingly accessible account of all the major elements—environmental, social, biochemical, psychological, and neurological—related to crime and human violence, leading us to the conclusion that yes, some people are natural born killers.”—New York Journal of Books“An extremely informative, thoughtful and illuminating book . . . a tour de force.” —David P Farrington, Psychological Medicine“Fascinating. . . . The message that ought to be taken from this book is that criminality should be seen as a public health problem. Excellent child nutrition, strict controls on the use of heavy metals, classes in parenting and extra learning support for children and parents from difficult backgrounds. . . . Raine’s book represents a compelling argument that they are not optional extras, boom-time luxuries, but measures that have the potential to save countless billions, and countless lives.”—The New Statesman“A passionately argued, well-written, and fascinating take on the biology of violence and its legal and ethical implications.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Compelling research. . . . Although the topic will certainly continue to provoke controversy, Raine offers a highly accessible look at the latest research on the biology behind criminal behavior.”—Booklist“An exhaustive, unvarnished survey of what is known about the neurobiological correlates of physical violence. It is deeply informative and it makes for disquieting reading. It wisely refrains from claiming a single cause for the problem or advocating a single solution. It is an indispensable reference.”—Antonio Damasio, author of Descartes’ Error and Self Comes to Mind"Important. . . . A thorough yet sparkling, erudite but beautifully written account. . . . Raine discusses complex scientific and ethical issues and illustrates them by drawing on a series of famous, sometimes unsettling case studies, thereby making scientific knowledge more accessible to a wide audience. What emerges is a rich picture of the complexities of human violence. The book is gripping from start to finish."—Stephanie van Goozen, Professor of Psychology, Cardiff University“[The Anatomy of Violence] is not only for students of this topic, but for any inquiring mind. It is just simply captivating, both emotionally and intellectually.”—Diana Fishbein, Ph.D., Senior Fellow and Scientist, Transdisciplinary Science and Translational Prevention Program, RTI International“Indispensable. . . . A highly readable, often gripping account of how our biology affects our violence. The book’s great success is that it makes how we learned about crime and the brain as exciting as what we have learned. If we take this book seriously, criminology can move much closer to solving some of the biggest mysteries we face.” —Lawrence W. Sherman, Wolfson Professor of Criminology, Director, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge “At once highly educational and surprisingly entertaining. . . . An easy, highly enjoyable, and richly rewarding read. The significant social, biological, and legal aspects of violent behavior make it a virtual minefield of sensitive and controversial issues.”—Joe P. Newman, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison  “A great read. . . . This is a book that will make you reflect on how you personally and society more generally views and responds to antisocial behavior. Is it time to think of violence as a disease, where rehabilitation takes precedence over punishment, and where prevention may be the only real cure? Read the book, and then you be the judge.”—Mark S. Frankel, Ph.D., Director, Scientific Responsibility, Human Rights and Law Program, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) “Courageous, brilliant, and provocative. . . . Based on the latest scientific evidence Raine poses the fundamental question, Where does society draw the line between the effects of nature and nurture on brain function?”—Larry W. Swanson, Ph.D., University Professor and Appleman Professor of Biological Sciences, Neurology, and Psychology, University of Southern California“With The Anatomy of Violence, Raine brings the full force of his pioneering research, clear-eyed analysis, and sound policy prescriptions to our violence problem in America. Get ready for a tour de force in science, and one hell of a gripping read!”—Brandon C. Welsh, professor of criminology, Northeastern University, author of Saving Children from a Life of Crime "Anytime I need to know anything about the biology of crime, I go straight away to Adrian Raine. . . . Indispensable reading for students, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers."—Terrie Moffitt, professor, Duke University and King's College London

Professor Raine is not to be trusted. He seems to have an agenda which makes him avoid some issues and to distort other issues. He botches some topics so badly it's difficult to see how he can be innocent of purposeful deception. You can get a hint of his approach by simply looking in the index. Look up race. No entries. There is an entry for racism (he's against it) but not race itself. Apparently professor Raine hasn't noticed that the incidence of violent criminal acts varies by race. Whites commit a moderate amount of violent crime. Blacks a great deal more and Easts Asians hardly any. But he doesn't seem to think this well known pattern requires any comment in a nook on violent crime.I daresay there is probably no person in the United States who would not expect to see at least something on the issue of black violence in such a book. It's a very odd omission. It's as if in a book on the history of flight you ignored the Wright Brothers. Or a book on relativity but no mention of Einstein. Is this where academic criminology is today? On page 55 he writes in regard to the MAOA (warrior gene) - "While the base rate of the low-MAOA gene in Caucasian males and 56 percent in the Maori. it is 77 percent in Chinese males. yet the homicide rate in China is about 2.1 per 100,000." He then goes on to ridicule the idea that this gene which is so high in the Chinese when their violence rate is so low. There are two possibilities: Dr. Raine could be just confused and ignorant of how MAOA works or alternately he realizes how it works but he chooses to lie to the readership.MAOA deactivates the amine neurotransmitters. So if you make more of it you will have less circulating dopamine, serotonin etc. The gene is composed of a number of repeats. Those who have more repeats will there fore have less circulating neurotransmitters. Those with a low number of repeats will have more and be more violent. Raine cites the statistics by race for those with the 3R configuration and indeed there are not many differences among the races for three repeats. but the differences for two repeats (2R) are very large. African;s are at 5.5% for two repeats , Caucasians at only 0.1% and Asians at 0.00067%.Raine gives the statistics at the wrong number of repeats. Understood properly there is no data interpretation problem, Blacks have a very high hate of predicted violence, Caucasians a moderate rate and Asian males - hardly any violence at all.You can look it up. Raine makes an invalid argument either by mistake or by design.

Do murderers, psychopaths and criminal offenders have different brains than normal people? Famous neuroscientist, psychologist and criminologist Adrian Raine provides the answer to this question and so much more in his book The Anatomy of Violence. In it he provides plenty of detailed information ranging from short life stories of psychopaths like Randy Kraft and Jane Toppan to research from around the world as well as a bit of his own work. Engaging and at times sprinkled with a bit of humor, Raine hopes to convince the skeptical reader that both biological and environmental influences have an important role in the shaping of a violent offender’s brain. While the book isn’t split into any obvious sections, you can essentially split the books by the topics that he covers. The topics that he covers are as followed: The genetic basis to crime, The neuroanatomy of violence, The environmental factors that play a role, and the possible solutions and ethical problems that this imposes. The first topic that Raine focuses on is how crimes like cheating, stealing, homicides and others can be seen from an evolutionary perspective. According to Raine these acts of antisocial behavior are cheating strategies that people use in order to promote their own genes within the genetic pool. Men for example, have evolved to use physical aggression to increase gene fitness and receive the parental investment for their offspring that women offer. Likewise women have evolved to use more subtle forms of violence like gossip in order to drive off potential rivals and lower the chances of losing the protection men provide for them and their offspring. The offspring themselves in turn can inherit certain aspects from their parents that can give them higher chances of becoming violent offenders later in the future. Raine then points out some potential culprits like a defective MAOA gene which can cause loss of impulse control and attention. Another culprit Raine mentions are low levels of serotonin and dopamine. Raine does warn, however, against the overestimation the role of inheritance plays. The second major topic that Raine covers is how the brain of a violent offender functions very differently from a normal person’s brain. He points out that the prefrontal cortex (area associated with cognitive functioning) is less active in murderers when compared to non-murderers. This impairment is what causes offenders to be more aggressive, and less able to control their emotions as well as being less capable at intellectual tasks. Having lower intellectual abilities result in factors that predispose them to the criminal way of life (failing school etc.). Surprisingly Raine also discovers that multiple time murderers (serial killers) don’t have this impairment but rather contain impairments to other areas to the brain. These impairments may be a dysfunctional amygdala and or other limbic regions which in turn cause the individual to be unable to empathize emotionally with their victims. This is why some psychopaths can act so cold and emotionless when committing their devious acts. Raine makes this fact even more convincing by using example of psychopaths like Jane Toppan who committed her acts of murder for personal delight. Raine also mentions how physical abnormalities in the brain are also responsible for violent offenders. By providing images of brains, he points out how physical abnormalities can cause people to have higher chances of developing psychopathic tendencies. One such abnormality is cavum septum pelluciden (CPS), a condition in which the limbic structures do not develop normally. This abnormality is seen to be more prevalent in people with criminal records. Another example he uses to further illustrate this point is the good old Phineas Gage incident. He explains that when the rod pierced the man’s head, it caused him to become impulsive, violent and much different than what he used to be. As if this wasn’t enough, Raine then proceeds to give even more examples of violent individuals who have had some sort of physical abnormality through an accident or since child birth. His third topic moves away from the brain for a bit and instead targets some abnormalities found in the automatic nervous system. Here he shows how something as simple as a low heart rate can be an indicator of antisocial behavior. Those with low resting heart rates are thought to be more fearless and do not receive the same amount of arousal than those with more normal heart rates. This causes these individuals to be more prone to committing antisocial acts because not only are they not afraid of the consequences but they also want the same level of stimulation that we get from watching TV or listening to music. Unfortunately they do not receive the same arousal from these mundane acts as we do so they turn to more stimulating albeit questionable acts. After moving through the biological perspective, Raine begins to talk about the environmental factors (combined with biological ones) that play a role in violent offenders. Things such as birth complications and disruption of the developing brain are a few of the things he mentions that can cause individuals to be violent after birth. Another environmental factor he mentions that can have an effect is your diet. Based on a study that was done, Raine shows that those with malnutrition tend to be more aggressive and hyperactive. Another more interesting fact is that fish is a component that helps reduce aggressiveness due to the omega 3 oil that they contain. He does try to make it known however, that both environmental and biological factors are intertwined and work together. The final topic that Raine mentions in the book is probably the most though-provoking one. In this section he makes you brings together all the information that was presented and then proposes a solution to crime. The idea that is proposed is a program set in the near future called LOMBROSO. This program would require males ages 18 and over to have their brains scanned. Those who are seen to have high chances of becoming offenders are sent to a ‘home away from home’ to go through programs to lower these chances. However he then asks if the way this would work is ethical. He delves deeper into this question by providing examples that question your moral core. The most enjoyable part of the book for me was the idea that Raine proposes at the end. The idea of forcing people to follow through programs based on their chances of becoming offenders seems too much. It seems more like the program splits humanity into categories. Those who pass the program are clean and those who don’t are weeds. This is seen more prevalent since those ‘weeds’ would live separately from society until they are in an way ‘cured’. This part of the book really got me thinking about just how far should we go in order to better society and humanity. If you are interested in a book about neuro-criminology or simply something that will get your grey matter excited then I highly recommend you getting this book. Raine does a very good job convincing you that violence has biological and sociological roots by providing numerous studies and examples. In fact the only small negative aspect of the book is that at times the information that has been presented is too much! However the writing style of Adrian Raine keeps you reading until the very end. After finishing the book I would give it a solid 5 out of 5 stars. This book really sparked my interest in neuro-criminology and the many different routes neuroscience has to offer. My attention never faded because the evidence provided was very convincing and at times quite mind blowing. All in all this book was a very enjoyable read.

This book came to me as a recommendation, going through my singleness. The timing was surprisingly funny. Anyway at first I was reluctant b/c I'm that feminist who's stuck up in her ideologies/ways of thinking & doesn't need another book that'll drain her strength through foolish arguments. Plus I just didn't have time for it! Now to the one who fits the above description: Emerse yourself into the book! -Trust me you won't regret it. The first chapters will actually engage your arguments, that's assuming you rarely agree with every statement that's said. Be inquisitive and ask Staci/John for clarification. Be the reader who says, "Well no, I disagree with you" or "Girl, you better explain what you mean before I..." or "How about you put it like this" or "Wow! Now that's my girl!" I know, that's how serious my reading got to lol. -Be prepared to get some revelations about yourself. I'd suggest if you may, say a quick prayer for God to open the eyes of your heart and speak to you through Staci/John's book. It's no point to read this book for the sake of just reading. I'm just saying! -Please have a pen & notebook, or if reading from a tablet, make use of the highlight/note-taking options! You'll thank me later lol. -I enjoyed the authors' interpretation to the creation story and the Fall of man. Staci stresses the fact that Eve is the crown of creation, and continues to base everything she's goes through, on this fact. Ever wondered why females in society go through a lot? Well, the devil works day and night to fight against the crown of beauty, the crown of creation, Eve. Lucifer was once the most beautiful creation but after his fall, he became the angel of death. Eve on the other hand (created in God's beauty) is blessed with the gift of bringing life to the world. Won't Lucifer always be on her case seeking to destroy her due to jealousy? Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, you name it! -The feminist part of me made sense of what I should be fighting for. Feminism in today's society has been given a negative light and even though this book doesn't address this topic, keep an eye out for the subtle points and make personal meaning out of each! -Last but not least, this book sheds light on the amount of healing I should seek. Yes, our past should never dictate our future but it for sure explains our present. It helps to get closure, find healing, forgive yourself & others involved and move on. Grieving is healthy, and God is the best comforter in times of grief. One major lesson from my past, that this book helped point me out: Lack of grief is dangerous. The enemy uses it against you and this unknowingly or knowingly leads you deep into sin.

I am a man who read this in an effort to better understand my wife and to gain some insight into how she thinks. Wow! Let me just say what a great job John and Stasi Eldredge have done with this one. If you're a guy who has read John's book "Wild at Heart", then you owe it to yourself and your wife to read Captivating. This book can help a lot of women, but I think it will also impact a lot of husbands if they give it a try.

Im someone who comes from a shaky faith background. My parents went from being religious to hating God, back to church, then back to “God hates us”. It wasnt a good foundation to start with. And probably why I struggle today with faith. By that I mean, I can understand the Athiests mind set as well as the agnostics. Faith is a hard concept to grasp. Its something I have always had, but have lost sight of throughout my adult years. This book has a very good message to it. Even if you’re not spirital or religious, you get a great sense of self worth. I found myself agreeing with much of what the authors had to say and also teared up during parts of this book too. I realized I am broken, but im not alone, and there is help for me. All I have to do is seek it.This book was brought to my attention by a dear friend of mine. I was skeptical at first, all I heard was “jesus this” and “God that” BUT, an older self called out from inside me. The one who was very spirital and prayed everynight and had conversations with God in their car, and battled with non believers, and I found myself listening harder and enjoying this book more and more as time went on. I finished it in a day (I got an audio version) and it was a plessure to listen to, and has left me wanting more. It really was captivating.

I first discovered John Eldredge with "Wild at Heart" which completely changed my perspective about my husband. It illuminated the way I handled situations, prayed for my man and in turn, with the power of Christ, changed our marriage. After reading the book multiple times and having the 3 things a man needs embedded in my spirit, I realized there was "Captivating"! I purchased this book a few years back, but could never get past chapter one or two. Not for lack of trying, but something kept me from reading it. It wasn't time. Starting the book over last March after my husband returned from a 3-day intensive God-seeking men's event, I felt the time was right. I needed freedom and God pointed me right to this book again. I took my time. Reading and rereading truths that Papa was revealing to me and highlighting and sharing numerous passages on practically every page. My eyes were opened and my perspective began to shift for myself. So much more could be said about how God has used this book to impact my life, but simply stated...if you are in a place you are tired of being, feeling stuck in your head about your walk with God, what he has called you to do, your place, your purpose or needing something more, read Captivating with an open heart. The discoveries you will have about yourself, or even the discoveries my husband now has had about me, are life changing. So thankful for John & Stasi Eldredge and pray we get to thank them face-to-face one day for being the mouthpiece Papa used for freedom.

Great book by John and Staci Eldredge. This has really augmented my reading into be an authentic woman and human being. It has helped me be the real me without apology. I'm learning to be comfortable in my own skin, give my best every day and not criticize any perceived shortcomings. This is a must-read for women, and the men who love them, for anyone searching for authenticity steeped in a base of a solid moral compass.

Tales of the Greek Heroes weaves together stories of ancient Greek heroes from the beginning to Troy. The stories are similar to any other retelling, but the book manages to make them more of a cohesive unit with one story relating to and leading to the next. These retellings are excellent and I highly recommend reading them to people of all ages!

Love, love, love this book! I find that some Greek mythology stories are too watered down for kids. These of course have been watered down but not too much. I also love the way the book looks. It has a very nice cover.

Great contrast for comparison studies on the different Greek tales. This was bought as a companion for several other books purchased on mythology. I used it for my children's mythology and legends course study. The kids never balked at their reading assignment and they enjoyed the multitude of information that it covered.

Our 9 year old grandson found this good to read and easily understandable. He had an interest in Greek mythology already and wanted a book of his own. This filled that need nicely.

Great book for kids that want to learn about myths. Stories are well organized and easy to read.

10 yr old boy loves this book.

Having visited Greece and not being able to fully take in the mythology side of their history, I decided to buy this book. I found it easy to read, and though I still don't have all the Greek gods & goddesses names down pat, I have a much better knowledge of who is whom and what they did. Definitely one for those that want to get into mythology.

...told in story form. Almost biblical in language, and that makes it kind of fun. Great background if you're reading Rick Riordan's Greek/Roman books; almost a must-read for that, since he, himself recommends and wrote the forward for this book, which he read growing up and used as the starting point for his mythological accuracy. And yes, kids who are reading about Percy and Jason can understand this book including Perseus and Jason very easily.

I like the fact that this author is detailed and knows what he's talking about. The pace of the book is just right I can't wait for the rest of this series plus the Classes and the World seems to be really polished not like some of these author's that you've read who you could tell has never played a video game in there life.

This is a LitRPG novel that tries to do a lot of stuff. The novel does a good job on the RPG sections. There are detailed game mechanics, the main character (MC) feels like a true gamer, the MC has an interesting class, the fights feel like the RPG powers matter, and there is good RPG progression. Additionally, the fights are well described and feel very actiony. Good stuff.Where the novel loses me, is in much of the rest of the story. There’s a cyberpunk/cyber thriller real world storyline that I just never liked or bought into. It just didn’t make sense to me. But I could almost ignore that if I connected with either the real world or game world. But that never happened for me either because of the way that the world building was done. Both the real life and game world lore and world building felt kind of flat to me. The information about both was always presented as an info dump. The MC would just rattle off statements that could have been really interesting, but instead they were just kind of thrown out there with a bunch of names but no context or depth about why events happen. I mean, in this novel, the USA doesn’t exist. There was a civil war and some foreign powers were involved and there’s now two countries and for some reason there’s an organization that controls how many kids get born. All that seems like it would make for some great stories, but the author never goes into depth about it. There are just statements that these things exist and then the story moves on.The same is true for the game world building, only it’s even harder to connect to that world. Instead of the MC gradually learning the history of the world, races, or factions by talking to NPCs or through his own research, he just automatically knows everything about the world because the game implants the knowledge. It’s conveyed by MC as recollections, but again, it’s all spit out as statements with no context given or depth. It came across to me as a very awkward way to convey details. You lose a sense of discovery because the MC describes it like he remembers it but there is this dissonance because you know he can't have. Details about battles he, even as as his character, wouldn't have been in and bits of history or lore he wouldn't have been privy to as a child or adolescent in that world. He would talk to other people as his character, referencing implanted fantasy/background history, but it never felt genuine.Overall, I liked the action, how much of a gamer the MC came across as, and the RPG stuff. However, I never connected with the motivation for the MC, the real world, or game world.Score: 6 out of 10

There were a lot of elements i liked in void legion. Making it less obvious who the players are, having skills drop or lootable... I enjoyed the story. Mostly. It was a mad dash of adventure with a pretty cool end battle. Some of the side threads of the opposition got longish. I'll definitely continue with the next book.

From the Author

This book covers all of the topics necessary to effectively install and administer an Oracle Solaris 11 system. When used as a study guide, this book will save you a great deal of time and effort searching for information you will need to administer Oracle Solaris 11 on SPARC and x86-based systems. This book covers each topic in enough detail for inexperienced administrators to learn about Oracle Solaris 11 and apply the knowledge to real-life scenarios. Experienced readers will find the material complete and concise, making it a valuable reference for everyday tasks. Drawing from my years of experience as a senior Oracle Solaris administrator and consultant, you'll find new ideas and see some different approaches to system administration that probably were not covered in your Oracle Solaris administration training courses. You might be familiar with my Oracle Solaris certification training guides and exam prep books that have been published over the past 15 years. I am a Solaris Subject Matter Expert for Oracle. I participate in the development of the Oracle Solaris 11 certification exams, and I have made certain that the topics covered on the exam are covered in this book. But, rather than stopping at simply an exam prep book, I have gone to great effort to ensure that all tasks that you need to perform are covered beyond what is simply required to pass the exam. Experienced administrators will find many welcome enhancements in Oracle Solaris 11, but they will also find Oracle Solaris 11 is vastly different from previous versions of the operating system. Oracle has added new features and, in some cases, has completely redesigned some of the functions you may have used on a daily basis. To eliminate the frustration of learning a new environment, I describe new solutions for performing familiar tasks. Welcome to the Oracle Solaris 11 community, and don't forget to visit my blog at unixed.com/blog where I answer your questions and discuss various topics related to Oracle Solaris administration.

From the perspective of presenting a top-down, very contemporary, articulate, complete, and thoroughly well-produced book, this reference gives you a handy all-in-one guide to system administration on Oracle Solaris 11.1. All the major and important system administration activities and procedures, as well as some minor facts which might seem trivial at first, but are actually very important, are covered in a clear and cogent way. If you had to wade through the huge volume of documentation provided by Oracle that comes with the software ( or use your Google-Fu), just to find out the details of some small fact or technique, you would realize how powerful this book really is. It will make your life with Solaris easier, like it did mine.Just a few examples: there is a section on dealing with removable media such as USB devices, drives, thumb drives. There is excellent coverage of Secure Shell, how to start it up, manage it, etc.. Those are practical and contemporary subjects that a modern UNIX System Administration book must cover. Also, there is extensive coverage of how to add packages to your base system via the command line, which is a very critical, practical System Administration topic!A tremendous added benefit- ZFS is covered and explained completely and beautifully!Even if this book cost 3 times what Amazon is charging, you must have it.Robert M. KoretskyUNIX: The TextbookEdited 4/7/14- A big benefit of using Solaris 11.1 instead of OpenIndiana (May the Computer Gods forgive me for espousing a commercial system over a freeware system) is that the IPS GUI Package Manager on Solaris 11.1 has access to more packages that actually can be installed on your system. Even though the author recommends and heavily illustrates using a command line version of the IPS Package Manager, I found that with the default Gnome desktop GUI and IPS GUI, I could download and install Python 2.7.3 with Tkinter built into it from the Solaris repository in a couple of easy steps. Very similar to using the command line pkg package management system in PC-BSD or FreeBSD to get new packages from the FreeBSD Repository.Edited 10/15/14- I'm into virtualization now, and it seems the common shortcoming of documentation on zones (this book included) is that no one tells you how to log into the zone from the Internet using ssh, FTP, or telnet, or how to actually install an application in the zone! For example, what IP address do you use to ssh into a zone running on a Solaris 11.2 machine, from somewhere on your LAN or the Internet? And as far as installing an application, I don't mean a full web server stack, just some simple app that you don't trust and want to put in a zone to test. This book shows you how to create and administrate zones (it is an administration book after all), but not how to actually use them in some simple cases! After all, it does do that with zfs. I'm hoping that the authors' advanced book will do that. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/o11-092-s11-zones-intro-524494.html is a web page at Oracle that has an excellent intro to zones, and shows in a few easy steps how to add apache-22 to a zone! Bravo! And the Oracle web page also adds the zone to rpool on the vdev that Solaris boots from- Dr. Calkins in his zone intro creates a new zpool on another hard disk for the zone. I don't quite get the rational for that.

While classic UNIX seems to be fading in favor of Linux, if you still use Solaris (Solaris 11.x), this book fills in the gaps where the Oracle manuals (while usually ok), aren't quite as clear. The SMF, ZFS, and networking were of particular interest to me and this book hit those targets pretty well. I still have Sun servers that were put into production in 2003 that are still humming along and doing what they need to do. We also have newer Sun equipment (M-series and T-series) that beat the pants off of their x86 counterparts. Especially when it comes to VM's. You just can't beat the Oracle VM's (zones) using VMWare. But, it does take competent administration on any system to keep peace amongst the user community. So, to fill in the gaps, this book was a big help.

Overall, the book was good for a transition from Solaris 10 or even Solaris 9 to the next generation of Solaris operating systems. For getting a system up and running and becoming familiar with it, this book will suffice. My interests extended beyond the scope of this book. Although zones were covered, there is a slim chance that I will use them so I glossed over this section. Maybe that is someone else's interest. My interest was the image packaging system, which was covered well. Then my interests reached into building a network server: installadm commands, creating services, DHCP, and building clients by Automated Installation over a network. It took a great deal of time referring to Oracle website postings to find the right commands. Finally, disaster backup and recovery using USB devices and Automated Install was not mentioned. Every competent System Administrator needs that training. For these advanced topics, the typical reader will have to spend a lot of time searching the Internet for bits and pieces of help. In the next revision of Solaris 11, I recommend those topics be included in step-by-step commands. For what I need, I compiled my own step-by-step document to be my primary instruction guide and will use the book for performance monitoring commands and maybe network filing system setups. This author's previous Solaris 8, 9, and 10 Administration Guides were much better at covering these topics.

Much of what is included in this book can be found at the publicly available docs for Solaris from Oracle. There are some tips that Oracle's Solaris documentation do not cover. It is up to the reader to determine whether or not those tips are worth the cost of this book.

Initially I buy this book for about 100 pages of ZFS of Solaris 11.1. And I love the NFS chapter because it covers both ways of NFS shares in Solaris 11 GA and in Solaris 11.1. Then, I go though a whole book and figure out that this is the best book I can get for Solaris 11.1 system admin.I buy one copy for each member in the project team. My colleagues love it also.Strongly recommended! Hope the "advanced one" by the same author will publish soon.

Great reference book!

Overall a good book. The only issue I saw was in the ACLs section. For Solaris 11 it should have been the chmod commands and not setfacl sincethe file system is ZFS and uses NFSv4 styled ACLs.

Didn't apply much to my specific tasks.
