Look, I enjoyed this novel, so 3.5 stars. It'll definitely keep you turning the pages. It's well-written and exciting. BUT, if you're at all an attentive reader, you'll figure out the "big twist" long before it's revealed. There is also a very silly coda that an editor should have cut, which would have made the ending more satisfying. All that aside, you weird uncle Jimmy, sez, "Check it out".

I got an ARC of this book. There is a lot to this book. I was in love with it from the very first chapter until about 89%. The last 11% just made me feel so cheated. The opening scene introduces one of the main characters of the book. The book is mostly told surrounding Viktor. He takes his post and its all fascinating. His ideas are very Jung, which is you know me, I wouldn't normally enjoy. The exciting part for me was he was doing this and had met Jung. So it was like psychology history fanfiction for me. It was wonderful. There was even a hint of Nazis and WWII looming over everything. It was the perfect setting for me. It was the type of thriller that actually held my attention. I normally am not a fan, but this one was special. There were interviews with The Devil's Six. They are interviewed one by one and you learn their terrible pasts and their terrible deeds. It was really engrossing. So if you like reading about serial killers and why they started killing, this book will hit buttons for you. There is a lot of mythology and lore in the book too. So if you read about Vlad Dracul III and were fascinated by him, then this book will be perfect. You get all this lore about Jack the Ripper and possible explanations for what happened. There is a lot of references to demons and devils which made the book have the potential for the supernatural. There was clear strong hints throughout the book about it. It was really spooky at times. I was all for it. The romance plot felt forced to me. There was no chemistry between the two and there was no real reason for the romance. This was the weakest plot for me, up until the big reveal. The big reveal just left me feeling cheated. There was all of this build up and then it was what it was. I don't want to ruin the ending as it is still a decent ending. The plot device used was done somewhat convincingly throughout the book, though it felt more less convincing through the last 11% of the book. If it weren't for the ending, I would have given this book five stars. I do have to warn about content. There is graphic descriptions of gore and violence, sexual assault of a child, religious figures engaging in sexual assault, an assumption that DID makes someone a killer (A HUGE PLOT POINT), and a great deal of racism (mostly antisemitism and against the Romani people). So there is a great deal to be triggered by, it is easy to overlook unless you are sensitive to these things. Despite them all, I was engrossed in the book and would have happily kept reading. Just that ending...

A little while ago I was asked to read and review ‘The Devil Aspect’. Although I don’t often read Gothic Thrillers, this book sounded so fascinating and the cover looked so beautiful, I just couldn’t decline this review request. As a nurse working with the occasional psychiatric patients, this book definitely spoke to me, and I couldn’t wait to start reading.‘The Devil Aspect’ is a thrilling, fascinating and cleverly written book that makes you want to keep reading. From the very first page it is clear that the author did an incredible job researching this book. ‘The Devil Aspect’ takes place in 1935 Czechoslovakia and it’s a great combination of history, combined with fiction. Reading about the main character Victor Kosirek, a psychiatrist who works in an asylum that houses six of the most treacherous killers was definitely something else. Although there were some moments inside this book that were a little slow, I mostly found myself wanting to read more.On more than one occasion this book definitely freaked me out a bit. In a good way! I work as a nurse on a Trauma ward and see psychiatric patients a lot. I definitely don’t like working with patients that are schizophrenic or psychotic too much, but it is a part of my job and reading this book I found myself recognizing certain aspects the main character had to deal with. And it was definitely a little disturbing at times but definitely made me want to keep on reading.‘The Devil Aspect’ keeps you hooked and wanting to read more to find out what is really going on. We go from following psychiatrist Victor, to following police investigator Lukas Smolak who is on the hunt to find a brutal serial killer. I could have gone without all the side info about these characters. Which made this read a little slow at some moments, but because the main part of this book is so fascinating you’ll find yourself wanting to keep on going.Even though this book isn’t one I usually would read I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was thrilling and exciting and I loved the whole history part too. Especially since I’ve been to Prague too. As with a lot of great books that take place in cities I’ve been too, I could picture the main characters walking through the beautiful streets of Prague and it made this book even more fascinating to me.If you are looking for a dark and scary, well written thriller with twists.. ‘The Devil Aspect’ is definitely for you.

It is difficult to adequately capture the important message in Good Enough Now. Pettitt is stealthily inspiring, encouraging, and unsettling. I say 'stealthily' because her words are so darn _reasonable_ and yet, before you know it, you're looking at your own excuses, your own assumptions, your own limitations through a completely different lens.I just love some of the phrases she uses that stick in your head and do their work almost unconsciously - just when you need them. For example...when you're stuck, investigate the "possibility of possibility." I love that - it creates space for thinking and getting unstuck. Another of my favorites: "Leave room for edits" - our story is never the full story. How much better life can be and more effective we can be when we "leave room for edits" in our perspectives, "truths," and assumptions about others. I wish every human being could read or hear this particular message. Another concept that I continue to learn is "holding space" - for yourself and for others, for their experience and yours, without an expected agenda or outcome.Whether you're reading this book as a citizen concerned with the family, work, community, country, or world you live in or as an individual trying to come to grips with how you can make the best difference, Pettitt gives you a gem. In turns challenging, comforting, and inspiring, you can't read this book and be the same person (and that's a great thing).Happy Reading,David Dye, author of Winning Well: A Manager's Guide to Getting Results---Without Losing Your Soul

An excellent and practical book about doing and making opportunities occur based on what a person currently has; it’s a book about eliminating excuses and moving forward. The nerd in me is ecstatic that it’s well researched, cross-tying elements of previous literature and commentary in fields such as communication, but then the topic is made practical by Pettitt. Pettitt creates this practicality and realism in her commentary, personal reflections, and then appeals to the reader to engage in activities to understand through self-reflection using one’s head and heart with the eventual goal of action. The book has broad appeal; I’m a small business owner who has struggled with inaction because of a desire to have a firm foundation before moving forward. This has resulted in stagnation or missed opportunities. Pettitt provides many exemplars from her own personal stories of engaging in education, specifically diversity/social justice work, which have easy cross application. The activities (I snapped a picture) are not goofy, they’re concrete and allow for specific elements to be recognized.Having been a past user/subscriber to the Franklin Covey methodology, I often struggled because the set-up and reflection component was not tangible enough for me. I liked the planner, but that was tangible. Covey and other self-help seemed more pie in the sky for me and I often felt that the activity or the reflections didn’t apply to me or my circumstances. Pettitt specifically targets heart, head, and action components in her book, discussing how to engage in each of those three areas, acknowledging that different types of people will respond to each area. I like this and it resonated strong enough with me to think that there is at least an understanding that there are variations in readers and how people implement information. I think that this book has the advantage in this specific area.An additional nerd moment is that the book has a strong enough binding to let me crease it to write in and it doesn’t fall apart. Honestly, I’ve missed that for a long time. Oh! …and the pages are thick enough so that they don’t bleed through when I write on them. Oh! Wait, I can also go to the website and print out stuff. (Here’s to you book person like me, here’s to you).I’m not disappointed that I took a chance on reading and reviewing this book, it has broad appeal, an awesome message, and is simple and realistic to follow along. I get a lot of offers to review books via Amazon, but I often decline them because none of the subjects or topics appeal to me, especially those that are advertised as “self-help” or “motivational.” This one by Jessica Pettitt is different, it’s about recognizing that now is the time to do what we need/want to do, as doing is better than nothing. I’m excited that I was given an opportunity to get a review copy of this book and read it; I really recommend it. Trust me, I'm pretty okay telling the truth about wasteful products, but this one is different, it's pretty captivating.

Absolutely Amazing! Jessica nails it with this extremely motivating and honest approach at making things happen in your life right now without wait, fear or perfection. If your looking to learn laugh and lead yourself into a better place Good Enough Now will show you the way.

Being the runt of the litter, with the unpardonable sin of being smart instead of cute, and simply not "fitting in" for a long time, I loved this book. I sped read it and now will need to go back again slowly. There is so much to grasp as Jessica shares deep parts of herself and introduces a three-part methodology to explore just why and how we show up. We all carry within us deeply held beliefs that can get in the way of STANDING UP and STANDING OUT. Jessica believes and teaches: we ARE good enough now.Read and reap. I know I did and am.

I’ve seen Jessica speak before and she is amazing, her skills as a writer are exceptional as well. Good enough now is a great read, full of practical strategies to help you become a better listener, communicator, friend, co-worker, teammate, leader, etc. Jessica shared lots of personal stories and examples in this book to help me better understand the content. She is real and authentic and this comes through in her writing! Throughout this book, she has inspired and motivated me to be the best “version of me” that I can be. I loved this book and feel confident you will as well. -Brian Udermann, Author, professor, professional speaker

Finally able to sit down with this book on a recent flight, and so appreciate the reminder, encouragement and tips for reflecting on myself as change agent. I finished it well before landing; it started a conversation with flight mate; and I'm only starting to apply its handy take-aways. Clearly more than just a "good enough" read!

Jess has a great communication style and is able to communicate truth and humor in the same paragraph.Offers practical application on daily work of doing good in the world.

Most amazing all round book I've read in a while! Humor, real life application, inspirational - all in one. Even as a social worker I tend to forgot about the simple thing as connection. This book is a good read and I love the journaling built in along the way.

Life I've Picked, by John McEuen

Review

“Beautifully written, John’s book is an intimate and revealing memoir of a long and diverse music career and the ups and downs of life on the road. We’ve each had a complicated and thrilling journey since our high school friendship sent us off into the world.” —Steve Martin, banjo picker, actor, and writer  “John’s terrific, funny, moving book makes you feel like you are right there with him on some of the most famous stages in the world, in the top recording studios, and on the never-ending road. It makes you feel that an amazing successful career in music and show business is totally within reach—as long as you can play the banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and guitar brilliantly.” —David Mirkin, producer, The Simpsons  “Nitty Gritty is one of the greatest bands and gifts music will ever hold. John McEuen doesn’t know how not to be honest . . . as a player or an author. You’re going to love this read!!” —Garth Brooks  “John McEuen was a breathtaking prodigy when he made his bones in the Southern California music scene of the early seventies. This book chronicles the realization of that early promise and the challenges of a professional musician’s life on the road.” —Linda Ronstadt  “The road tales are extremely entertaining, but John’s depictions of off-the-road time spent with family are extremely entertaining too. Compelling, candid, hilarious, and heartwarming, The Life I’ve Picked by John McEuen shows he’s not just a great musician—he’s also a hell of a writer.” —Randy Poe, author of Skydog: The Duane Allman Story  “John McEuen has been a hero of mine since I first saw him flying around the stage with a fiddle at a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band show in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. A key member of that legendary band, solo artist of renown, radio host, producing great projects—all the while touring the world as an entertainer and influencer. . . . The Life I've Picked is a fun and poignant read. I thought I knew about John, but there is oh so much more to learn in this thrilling ride.” —Joe Bonsall, The Oak Ridge Boys  An “enjoyable, conversational memoir.”—Booklist Online"I wouldn't want to have to count how many interesting stories small, medium and extra large that appear in John's long life in music, but they sure make for one fine book." —Elmore Magazine "The Life I've Picked is a wonderfully entertaining and impressively informative read from cover to cover." — Midwest Book Review

Ordered my copy early, and just got it a couple days ago. First thing I did was look at all the photos, then dove in. Can’t say enough good things about the book. It really took me back. I decided I wanted to play mandolin when I heard it on Mr. Bojangles, when it first came out. I was probably about 7 years old. I’d later cut my musical teeth on the first Will the Circle Be Unbroken recordings. For me, John was always the stand-out, and I’ve followed his and the band’s career pretty closely. He’s quite the story teller, and I was amazed at the number of cross musical genre friends and connections he has had over the years. Friendships and connections with some of the Greats, as I see it. Hey John! I think you qualify as one of them too! I was impressed with the book’s honesty, but fairness. Especially regarding issues with, and poor treatment from now former band mates. I couldn’t help but feel for John, who worked his butt off to achieve his dreams. The book was also witty and funny. I was lauging out loud more than a few times, often thinking, “Man, you couldn’t make this up!” I’ve really enjoyed the book immensely. Highly recommended. My only disappointment is that it didn’t come in hardback. Thanks for sharing your life John! You are an inspiration to the rest of us front porch pickers out here, and dammit, you’ve had a Wonderful Life! Hope to see you out on the road soon!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was a great look back at my growing up years, musically. Honest, funny, sometimes sad. John takes us through a Forrest Gump kind of journey with the many musicians and celebrities he has met along the way. John defines himself as a "banjo nerd". He was always trying to be accepted by the cool kids. Well John, from one music geek to another, you made it! YOU are the cool kid now. Thanks for re awaking my love for Bluegrass. Love ya", Theresa Berweiler

Full disclosure: John's an old friend and played on two of my albums. That said, this is one of the best music autobiographies I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that when you KNOW the author, you're less inclined to gush--but the beauty of this book cannot be denied.Unlike some music autobiographies, there is no debilitating addiction problem here--other than music itself. Sure, there are moments of titillation and surprise; juicy tidbits, moments of high hilarity and I'll admit I was moved to tears more than a few times. If you're familiar with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--you'll love this look behind the scenes. But if you don't know their work, you'll still love the ride (and, dare I say, feel motivated to get at least of couple of their early albums such as Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy, Stars and Stripes Forever, Symphonium Dream--everyone has their favorite, mine is Uncle Charlie, I consider it The White Album of Country Rock). This book should be read by anyone contemplating a career in music--or the arts in general. McEuen's talents are many, but they also include razor-sharp business acumen, ambition and a dogged sense of entrepreneurship--something his bandmates failed to adequately appreciate. There is acrimony and there are issues that must be addressed across 50 years of nonstop music-making. This is McEuen's opportunity to have his say and he does it fairly yet pulls few punches. He paid a personal price for pursuing his dream (divorce, sacrificing time with his kids)--but still managed to raise a fine, super-talented family and retain his sanity and sense of humor. That's rare in this business. He name-drops out of necessity (it ain't braggin' if it's true) and yet his humility is never far away. American life is a constant series of reinventions. Few people have been able to pull that off like John McEuen: late in life he branched out into TV/Film scoring and quickly garnered an Emmy-nomination. He also won a Grammy for producing Steve Martin's banjo album The Crow as recently as 2009.I can't wait to see what this banjophile dynamo does next.

As a longtime NGDB and John McEuen fan I was eager to read this book. But his life has crossed paths with such interesting people, including many, many very well-known artists in the music industry, and he has had such crazy, fun, unlikely experiences along the way, that I think just about anyone, fan or not, would have a hard time putting it down. Aside from being a great musical talent with a storied career, John is a wonderful story-teller, and his story was one worth telling. I love this book.

For any fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this is a cautious read! You are led into a world that I simply didn’t know existed within my favorite band. However, knowing that every band goes through the artistic self changes that afflict musicians, artist, chefs...and nearly all creative talents, it shouldn’t have been surprising that these issues affected NGDB.Regardless of the disappointment that “partners, brothers & friends” is much closer to fantasy than reality, this book is typical John McEuen story telling, which he masters brilliantly at both NGDB shows of the past and now his own road show. The stories always left me wanting more! The Disneyland adventures with Steve Martin to the months filming “Paint your wagon”, you just know there are more stories untold. All in all, I always felt the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band created the background music of my life’s story, they’ve been there since day one with me, and I saw John just last month performing his new show. A tremendous talent on stage, a tremendous story teller by way of his book. While sad for fans, it’s just a passing of time! Like knowing you may never hear Jimmy Ibbotson sing “Ripplin Waters” again...things move on! And in John’s case, things move forward.

Must read for NGDB and/or McEuen fans like me since 1967 Golden Bear era. It answers all the questions in a well written bitter/sweet history of John's rise and the band's sink in the dismal swamp.
