Review
“Beautifully written, John’s book is an intimate and revealing memoir of a long and diverse music career and the ups and downs of life on the road. We’ve each had a complicated and thrilling journey since our high school friendship sent us off into the world.” —Steve Martin, banjo picker, actor, and writer “John’s terrific, funny, moving book makes you feel like you are right there with him on some of the most famous stages in the world, in the top recording studios, and on the never-ending road. It makes you feel that an amazing successful career in music and show business is totally within reach—as long as you can play the banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and guitar brilliantly.” —David Mirkin, producer, The Simpsons “Nitty Gritty is one of the greatest bands and gifts music will ever hold. John McEuen doesn’t know how not to be honest . . . as a player or an author. You’re going to love this read!!” —Garth Brooks “John McEuen was a breathtaking prodigy when he made his bones in the Southern California music scene of the early seventies. This book chronicles the realization of that early promise and the challenges of a professional musician’s life on the road.” —Linda Ronstadt “The road tales are extremely entertaining, but John’s depictions of off-the-road time spent with family are extremely entertaining too. Compelling, candid, hilarious, and heartwarming, The Life I’ve Picked by John McEuen shows he’s not just a great musician—he’s also a hell of a writer.” —Randy Poe, author of Skydog: The Duane Allman Story “John McEuen has been a hero of mine since I first saw him flying around the stage with a fiddle at a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band show in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. A key member of that legendary band, solo artist of renown, radio host, producing great projects—all the while touring the world as an entertainer and influencer. . . . The Life I've Picked is a fun and poignant read. I thought I knew about John, but there is oh so much more to learn in this thrilling ride.” —Joe Bonsall, The Oak Ridge Boys An “enjoyable, conversational memoir.”—Booklist Online"I wouldn't want to have to count how many interesting stories small, medium and extra large that appear in John's long life in music, but they sure make for one fine book." —Elmore Magazine "The Life I've Picked is a wonderfully entertaining and impressively informative read from cover to cover." — Midwest Book Review

Ordered my copy early, and just got it a couple days ago. First thing I did was look at all the photos, then dove in. Can’t say enough good things about the book. It really took me back. I decided I wanted to play mandolin when I heard it on Mr. Bojangles, when it first came out. I was probably about 7 years old. I’d later cut my musical teeth on the first Will the Circle Be Unbroken recordings. For me, John was always the stand-out, and I’ve followed his and the band’s career pretty closely. He’s quite the story teller, and I was amazed at the number of cross musical genre friends and connections he has had over the years. Friendships and connections with some of the Greats, as I see it. Hey John! I think you qualify as one of them too! I was impressed with the book’s honesty, but fairness. Especially regarding issues with, and poor treatment from now former band mates. I couldn’t help but feel for John, who worked his butt off to achieve his dreams. The book was also witty and funny. I was lauging out loud more than a few times, often thinking, “Man, you couldn’t make this up!†I’ve really enjoyed the book immensely. Highly recommended. My only disappointment is that it didn’t come in hardback. Thanks for sharing your life John! You are an inspiration to the rest of us front porch pickers out here, and dammit, you’ve had a Wonderful Life! Hope to see you out on the road soon!
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was a great look back at my growing up years, musically. Honest, funny, sometimes sad. John takes us through a Forrest Gump kind of journey with the many musicians and celebrities he has met along the way. John defines himself as a "banjo nerd". He was always trying to be accepted by the cool kids. Well John, from one music geek to another, you made it! YOU are the cool kid now. Thanks for re awaking my love for Bluegrass. Love ya", Theresa Berweiler
Full disclosure: John's an old friend and played on two of my albums. That said, this is one of the best music autobiographies I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that when you KNOW the author, you're less inclined to gush--but the beauty of this book cannot be denied.Unlike some music autobiographies, there is no debilitating addiction problem here--other than music itself. Sure, there are moments of titillation and surprise; juicy tidbits, moments of high hilarity and I'll admit I was moved to tears more than a few times. If you're familiar with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--you'll love this look behind the scenes. But if you don't know their work, you'll still love the ride (and, dare I say, feel motivated to get at least of couple of their early albums such as Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy, Stars and Stripes Forever, Symphonium Dream--everyone has their favorite, mine is Uncle Charlie, I consider it The White Album of Country Rock). This book should be read by anyone contemplating a career in music--or the arts in general. McEuen's talents are many, but they also include razor-sharp business acumen, ambition and a dogged sense of entrepreneurship--something his bandmates failed to adequately appreciate. There is acrimony and there are issues that must be addressed across 50 years of nonstop music-making. This is McEuen's opportunity to have his say and he does it fairly yet pulls few punches. He paid a personal price for pursuing his dream (divorce, sacrificing time with his kids)--but still managed to raise a fine, super-talented family and retain his sanity and sense of humor. That's rare in this business. He name-drops out of necessity (it ain't braggin' if it's true) and yet his humility is never far away. American life is a constant series of reinventions. Few people have been able to pull that off like John McEuen: late in life he branched out into TV/Film scoring and quickly garnered an Emmy-nomination. He also won a Grammy for producing Steve Martin's banjo album The Crow as recently as 2009.I can't wait to see what this banjophile dynamo does next.
As a longtime NGDB and John McEuen fan I was eager to read this book. But his life has crossed paths with such interesting people, including many, many very well-known artists in the music industry, and he has had such crazy, fun, unlikely experiences along the way, that I think just about anyone, fan or not, would have a hard time putting it down. Aside from being a great musical talent with a storied career, John is a wonderful story-teller, and his story was one worth telling. I love this book.
For any fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this is a cautious read! You are led into a world that I simply didn’t know existed within my favorite band. However, knowing that every band goes through the artistic self changes that afflict musicians, artist, chefs...and nearly all creative talents, it shouldn’t have been surprising that these issues affected NGDB.Regardless of the disappointment that “partners, brothers & friends†is much closer to fantasy than reality, this book is typical John McEuen story telling, which he masters brilliantly at both NGDB shows of the past and now his own road show. The stories always left me wanting more! The Disneyland adventures with Steve Martin to the months filming “Paint your wagonâ€, you just know there are more stories untold. All in all, I always felt the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band created the background music of my life’s story, they’ve been there since day one with me, and I saw John just last month performing his new show. A tremendous talent on stage, a tremendous story teller by way of his book. While sad for fans, it’s just a passing of time! Like knowing you may never hear Jimmy Ibbotson sing “Ripplin Waters†again...things move on! And in John’s case, things move forward.
Must read for NGDB and/or McEuen fans like me since 1967 Golden Bear era. It answers all the questions in a well written bitter/sweet history of John's rise and the band's sink in the dismal swamp.
