The Mermaid's Sister, by Carrie Anne Noble

From Publishers Weekly

Set in 1870 on and around Llanfair Mountain, Pennsylvania, this delightful fantasy novel introduces the reader to Clara and Maren, sisters adopted around the same time by a woman (“Auntie”) known throughout the village for her cures. Maren came to Auntie in a conch shell, while Clara arrived via stork. Now, at sixteen, Maren is slowly turning into a mermaid, her fingers webbing and scales appearing on her sides. Clara wants Auntie to cure Maren, but that is not an option. Auntie responds, “There is no cure for being who you truly are.” As time passes, Maren’s body transforms more rapidly; it becomes obvious that it is time for Maren to be taken to the sea or she will die. Clara and a very close family friend, O’Neill, who also happens to be the object of desire of both sisters, decide to take Maren themselves. The story follows their adventure to the sea and the unexpected perils they face on the journey as their caravan burns down and they are “rescued” and then held captive by a group of traveling performers. This novel is widely appealing: there are elements of fantasy, romance, and adventure throughout. The book is a page-turner; the story pulls the reader in and the dynamic characters and plot twists keep interest levels high. The author’s writing style is very descriptive, helping the reader truly visualize the sights, sounds, tastes, and adventures of the characters. A must read.

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—This lovely, lyrical fantasy takes place in a mythical Pennsylvania mountain setting and tells the story of three foundlings—Clara, Maren, and O'Neill. Clara was delivered to Auntie by a stork, Maren was found in a seashell, and O'Neill was placed beneath an apple tree. Clara and Maren have grown up as sisters with wise woman Auntie as their guardian, while the young man O'Neill is raised by Scarff the traveling peddler. When Clara notices that Maren is developing scales and needs to spend more and more time in water, she realizes that her friend is turning into a mermaid and that no potion or magic will halt the change. Because the only way to save Maren is to return her to her father, the Sea King, Clara and O'Neill place Maren in a tub of salt water in the peddler's wagon and journey toward the ocean. However, they are waylaid by members of a traveling show who enslave them and put Maren on display in a freak show. Clara must overcome her inner doubts about who she really is in order to save Maren, O'Neill, and herself from the wicked traveling players. Like all good fairy tales, this one touches on deeper themes of sibling rivalry, jealousy, insecurity, and questions of identity. Osbert the rambunctious wyvern is a particularly well-done character. VERDICT Noble's treatment of the mermaid theme is fresh and original, and even her minor characters are beautifully depicted.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

When I finished this book and came to rate it, I was surprised to see that some of the lower rated reviews express disappointment in the slow development of plot, or the lack of intensity to the story line.I think the problem is not with this story, but that readers of YA fiction have been ruined by the likes of The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner. Not to knock those works -- I've read those, and more, and loved them. They are tough, gritty, edge-of-your seat rides, the rock stars of the YA world. But it isn't all rock-and-roll out there. Sometimes there is a ballad, sung mournfully and sweet, that makes your heart ache and tears well. It makes you yearn to hear more, to lift your voice and sing along. This is that story, every graceful, bittersweet, beautiful word.If you're the hardcore rocker, this might not be for you. But if you like to slow dance now and then, then this is a lovely choice.

When I read the premise for this book, I was really excited. I adore a good fairy tale, and especially one that weaves relatable, everyday humans with fantastical creatures. The idea is great, but the execution could have been improved.Plot-wise, it is straightforward, simple, and (for me, at least) a bit predictable. Their mission is determined at the beginning, and their mission is accomplished at the end. There aren’t any twists. They do hit a few snags to slow them down (otherwise, this would be a pretty short book), but it still ends exactly how I expected. The romance is also very predictable. (But just in case you don’t predict it, I won’t spoil it.)In places, the writing is beautiful, perfectly fitting for a fairy tale. In the first chapter, there's a line describing the wyvern: "His blue scales, pale as a summer sky on his belly and dark as midnight on his back, catch the dim light like curved slices of stained glass." I love the poetry of it, especially describing the glass as slices. Other sentences are more awkward. For example, at one point, a smile is described as such: “[the smile] would not look out of place on a crocodile with a belly full of fresh antelope.” While it gets the point across, this is a wordy way of saying the smile looks evilly satisfied. The characters are cute, but they could be more developed. Clara is enamored with her sister and constantly describing her beauty. Yes, her sister is a beautiful mermaid, but it sounds like Clara has a major inferiority complex, and that’s never addressed. Whenever Clara mentions herself, she talks about how she’s not pretty like her sister, not brave, not skilled, not at all noteworthy. This could have been an interesting plot point, where she realizes she doesn’t have to be a glorious, mythical creature to be special. But she never does. Even at the end, when someone tells her she’s brave and sweet, she refuses to believe it.Meanwhile, her sister doesn’t seem to live up to all the praise. The faster Maren transforms into a mermaid, the less personality she has. Once she loses her speech early in the book, all she does is primp, cry, or stick out her tongue at Clara. She seems more like the object of a video game quest than a dimensional person experiencing a major transformation. This story has a lot of promise: One girl destined to become a mermaid, the other girl struggling to accept the loss of her human sister and realize her own self-worth as an “ordinary” person. It’s clear the author is a wonderful writer. I just felt like a lot of aspects could have been more developed, and when they weren't, it fell a bit flat. Still, it’s a fun little adventure that keeps you reading.

I love this book! It is very well done, an example of how a book should be written! I’ve suggested this book to I don’t know how many people over the last several months (so, my apologies to the author for procrastinating writing this review.)The language flows naturally, easily, effortlessly; not once do your eyes trip over a clumsy sentence or even a bumpy word. The story structure is solid, and there are just enough twists and turns to surprise you but not confuse or lose you. The characters are multi-dimensional with minimal description, which is not easy to achieve. The imagination is impressive: never have I come across any mention of this kind of mermaid!Perhaps best of all, although having a mermaid in the family is what drives the whole story, the real story is not at all about having an actual mermaid in the family. This is the kind of book that you will continue to recommend to people years after you read it. Very well done!(By the way, I give 5 stars only to books like this, books that “wow” me.)

Bought this book on a lark. Although I devour books like a fine Christmas dinner, my taste lean more towards horror, dystopian wastelands, space operas and a scattering of star crossed mixed matched lovers. Having said that, I must admit The Mermaids Sister is by far one of the best reading experiences that I've ever had. Beautifully written, oft times poetic in it's telling it's a story filled with magic and wonder, sorrows and blessings, laughter and tears, endings and beginnings. A fairytale for the soul. This author has introduced me to a whole new genre of storytelling and skyrocketed to the top of my list of favorite reads.

This is a terrific cookbook that includes far more guidance and advice than just about any guide I have yet come across. Except for one major letdown, I would rate this at LEAST five stars. Before discussing that disappointment, though, let me explain why I still find this to be an exceptional aide in the kitchen. As will be evident as you peruse the attached screenshots, the author has a knack for summarizing her tried and tested mouth-watering dishes. Each recipe provides prep & finishing times; pressure cook duration; release times; as well as soak times (when appropriate). Ingredient listing is clear and easy to follow and is followed by instructions. She then explains how to double the recipe and, frequently, how to use the leftover ingredients; and, of special interest to me, she provides nutritional information.Three dishes stood out for me as especially welcome:A – North African Chickpea Stew;B – Pinto Beans with Chorizo (my absolute favorite sausage)C – Spaghetti Squash with Browned Butter and ParmesanI love the variety of dishes beyond explanation, and the method of presentation. So, what is the one disappointment? Simply put, too few photographs. I, and I believe many cooks, love to be able to view the dish we’re trying to prepare.Otherwise, though, this is an EXCEPTIONAL cookbook.BOTTOM LINEFour stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help you and me improve book reviews on Amazon. Together, you and I can build a great customer review process that helps everybody. Will you join me? It is people such as you who have helped me improve over the years. I'm still learning, and I have a great deal yet to learn. With your help, I'll improve every day.One request: Be respectful and courteous in your comments and emails to me. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

Janet A Zimmerman who has contributed to the For Two section of About for years as well as the author of Instant Pot® Obsession Instant Pot® Obsession: The Ultimate Electric Pressure Cooker Cookbook for Cooking Everything Fast and The Healthy Pressure Cooker Cookbook The Healthy Pressure Cooker Cookbook: Nourishing Meals Made Fast here combines those two fields of extensive expertise into the modern rendition of pressure cooking via Instant and cooking for two in The Ultimate Instant Pot® Cookbook for Two. This second (I think) of her Instant Pot® cookbooks targets the “For Two” cooking market and the 3-Quart and 6-Quart models and is “Authorized by Instant Pot®” unlike a plethora of cookbooks out there. Zimmerman truly is an IP expert to be trusted in the unique needs of IP cooking. If you have specific lifestyle or dietary needs for Keto, Vegetarian and Vegan, and Gluten Free, her recipes are very adaptable, and Zimmerman even specifically suggests the variation adjustments to make in many of her recipes. Vegetarians and Vegans may not think to pick up this cookbook because it’s not specifically titled as V-Friendly. However, Zimmerman devotes 3 of the non-dessert chapters to recipes which are already vegetarian or easily substituted to make them that way: Vegetables and Sides (just add quinoa to make into a protein or some other easily implemented variation), Beans and Grains (talk about Diet for a Small Planet, they either already are in a vegetarian complete protein combination, or just add 1 ingredient like brown rice to make them so), and Meatless Mains. The Beef and Pork chapter really isn’t so adaptable, but only really 2 chapters are not relevant. Zimmerman teaches so much about using your Instant Pot for cooking for 2 that it’s still a fantastic V-Friendly cookbook.Introduction1 Cooking for Two Made EasyZimmerman really is THE go-to Cooking-For-Two SME Subject Matter Expert and she gives a wonderful overview of applying that style of cooking to Instant Pot® pressure cooking.* My “For Two” Philiosophy* Instant Pot® 101: for the IP novices like me. If an IP newb like I am you look upon the Instant Pot® Centerfold as an example of everything you’ll get in purchasing a basic IP, you won’t. Zimmerman includes the two page spread to demonstrate both the Instant Pot® and some of the accessories you might want to purchase additionally depending on what recipes you most want to pursue and in what order. I do seek after the mini-cheesecakes, but steaming veggies and rapidly cooking beans are greater priorities for our needs.* Terms to Know: for IP cooking* Cooking the Instant Pot Way: prep and steps for cooking your dishes a la IP.A discussion of the different styles and sizes of Instant Pots®, as well as different food elements and managing them for IP cooking, ingredients and shopping to best cultivate a “For Two” cooking method, fridge, and pantry.Zimmerman also includes both ways to use “leftovers” of ingredients which you’ll have to purchase in portions larger than 1 dish suggestions to use the remainder on other recipes, ways to marrying up your cooking with your partner or dinner mate (great both for well-established couples and new couples looking to do more life activities together and not just dinners out during courtship.), as well as ways to increase the yield of the recipe for having it for more than 1 meal, stocking your freezer, or entertaining guests. Throughout the recipes, she provides various accommodations for different food allergies, diets, and lifestyles, without, of course, being exhaustive on the subject. You will need to think up some of your adaptations for some needs. She includes a guide to scale the dishes up and down as well.2 BreakfastFairly, not exclusively, egg-based, so less Vegan friendly, but you probably have some VEgg substitutes which you could likely use. For Atkins, South Beach, FMD Fast Metabolism and Low Carb Folks, great choices, slight adaptations needed only.3 Vegetables and SidesOh yippie skippie! Multiple options with Beets which are so super good for both men (ahem, on the virility side) and women.4 Beans and GrainsThis whole chapter was written for me, because we are endeavoring to do more complex carbs like brown rice, wild rice, and quinoa and legumes for meals. Without our wanting to go full vegetarian, we’re aiming to eat Meatless at least a handful of meals per week and to eat high fiber each day. So much of the world eats great beans and grains per day, Americans would do well to do more of this, too, with all of the fantastic health benefits. One note, in Jamaican Rice and Peas, she cites using Allspice. I just ran across this as an ingredient recently in another cookbook, and both I and another review faltered at bit at that ingredient being included in a savory dish. Turns out this is Allspice, a peppery herb, used in Jamaican, Caribbean, and some Middle Eastern dishes, not the clove-like tasting spice, All Spice. Who knew? Many of you might already. For us newbs to this herbs like me, this was a novel thing. Just, FYI. Secondarily on this dish, she’s suggesting long-grain rice. I’m sure we low-carbing folks would looking into a long-grain brown rice or cauliflower rice as alternatives.5 Meatless MainsI keep hearing Bugsy Bunny singing that Depression Era hit, “No More Meatless Tuesdays” with that title, but this is great for Vegetarians and Vegans and all of the rest of omnivores to work into our lives weekly. I’m already floating off in a fantasy of veggies contemplating how soon I can acquire the necessary cruciferous to make Curried Cauliflower Soup p. 76. The Mushroom Stroganoff sounds divine. It does call for egg noodles, which are too are too carby for me. But I’ll discuss with my middle sister about substitutions. Should we come up with something which works well, I’ll update my review later with that item.6 Seafood and PoultryHer Italian and Bean salad may just get me to try albacore without mayonnaise. I’m intrigued by the high protein combination of tuna and Cannellini white beans! Personally, I’ll be omitting the canned green beans and opt for the fresh ones from my produce area, more nutrients, less sodium and processed foods.7 Beef and PorkI am most intrigued to acquire a few necessary ingredients and pursue the Thai Red Beef curry! (I include a fuzzy focused picture of the page so the recipe details are given away which would rob Ms. Zimmerman of her IP.) Doesn’t the photo of the dish look terrific?8 DessertsOMG, mini cheesecake variations! We might be eating cheesecakes for months! I love this, because that is one of the drawbacks to me of more Cheesecake recipes or even portions at restaurants. They’re HUGE. Way too much and ergo not a good choice for me.I grew up outside of NYC where we could readily get Baby Watson cheesecakes which really were min-cheesecakes for one. You could have your cheesecake and eat it, too! Namely, you really could enjoy a single serving of excellent cheesecake without having to purchase either a whole cheesecake or huge slice which was large enough to share among a party of four. I could enjoy this without massively over-indulging.She doesn’t offer a veg alternative, but I think I have heard of using something like silky tofu as a cream cheese substitute, so maybe? And, drum roll please, Ricotta Cheesecakes! I have had this only in the Italian district of Boston. Articles have been written as poetic tribute odes to this dessert. I have been waiting for my sister who lives in Boston to come visit me again to bring me a whole one. I need no longer wait! I could attempt my own now with an Instant Pot and Zimmerman’s recipe! This dish is so amazing (I’d omit the strawberry topping, but I’m a purest that way, you might not be.), it’s worth the whole price of this cookbook just to attempt that!9 Kitchen StaplesInstant Pot Pressure Cooking Time ChartsSee what I mean about her being so helpful with her years of Pressure Cooking expertise conjoined with Instant Pot® cooking? She teaches so much to her readers about becoming more adepts with cooking with your Instant Pots®.I’m kind of lost in a sea of bliss thinking about how to play with different legumes and grains all from Chapter 4. In all likelihood, a few of those will be what I’ll be attempting first in the next few weeks. As I do so, I’ll be sure to come back here and update my review with some cooking anecdotes and images. I really appreciate how she used a number of different kinds of legumes so we can enjoy some variety in dishes as well as in the nutrients. One of the joys of cooking legumes in an Instant Pot® is the cooking dry beans can be done super rapidly without the need of an overnight soak. Cooks can get a better value working from the dried legumes and massively reduce the sodium in most of the canned beans readily available to use. We both cut down on cost at purchase and processed food intake, but buying dry reduces our kitchen’s garbage production as well.Personally, as an author and writer familiar with some of the challenges of the Publishing world, I’m often quite understanding of there not being a lot of photographs of the dishes because to do so massively increases the publishing costs. And the publisher does include a few more example photos throughout this cookbook than some of their others. But because I am just such a rank newb with the Instant Pot®, I really would have loved more photographs illustrating the outcomes more. But I’m not dinging them for it. Just, wistful thinking. All the recipes come with Nutritional Information, so you can manage your own family’s needs and requirements, which really is so helpful. This way there are no surprises about sodium or other item which can be a huge health issue for some like it is in our family and for some of my closest friends and their family.I HIGHLY recommend this cookbook. It’s so flexible and adaptable for so many different diets, lifestyles, and dietary needs. I hope my review helps you to better determine Zimmerman's Instant Pot® cookbook is for you and is helpful.I received a copy of the book from the publisher for an honest review.

I had high exceptions for this cook book... Very little normal comfort food in the book... Returning the same day as received... GL

Didn’t care for any recipes Not relevant to me and mine

I love that this book has recipes geared towards the different Instant Pots (BTW not surprising this book is authorized by Instant Pot) and so if you have any size model, you can really trust the amounts and the settings. I think, even with so many models, it is still difficult to always find the right setting and amounts, so this book definitely takes the guessing out of using the Instant Pot. And if you are like me and late to the game because you heard all these horror stories about exploding devices and kitchen ceilings needing make-overs, you appreciate any bit of security and trust in recipes you can get.The selection of the recipes overall is great too, from staples such as rice pudding and cheesecake, the book also has a nice section of meatless dishes and uses Quinoa and other ingredients that can be used in recipes made up by the more experienced user. The book is well organized and the images are just the right amount to keep the book in a format that can be easily carried and used, while cooking. Besides a good a number of stews, the book also has a nice selection of chicken dishes, such as sweet and sour chicken. Overall, a good book for the novice instant pot user, but the more experienced user will also find some interesting dishes.I received a free copy from the publisher.

This was very useful on our recent trip to Italy. We had both the Lonely Planet phrase book and this one with us, but this is the one we ended up using. We found it easier to navigate and more comprehensive than the other. It had more information and was organized more clearly than Lonely Planet. In particular, I thought the Rick Steve's pronunciation guide was easier to follow and got me closer to the correct pronunciation than the Lonely Planet book. However, what really tipped it over the edge was its section on health and medical care. My husband and I -- who travel frequently and rarely get sick -- contracted some kind of horrible flu/sinus infection/plague on the way out or Rome and needed to seek urgent medical consultation and care from a pharmacy on the Amalfi coast. The Rick Steves guide came to our rescue because it had more than three times the amount of health and medical vocabulary than the Lonely Planet book, which we desperately needed because we had a lot of specific symptoms to communicate and the pharmacist/doctor only spoke a few words of English. Thanks to Rick Steves, we were able to explain what was going on and get the right medical information (and medicine) to help us recover quickly. I don't know what we would have done if we had only had the Lonely Planet phrasebook to go on. We might have been given cough drops instead of antibiotics. If you are on the fence, this is the way to go.

If your goal is to just learn "survival Italian" for a vacation, you should get this book instead of or in addition to a more comprehensive and academically focused reference. With this alone, you will be better than 95% of tourists in terms of language proficiency. More importantly, this book focuses on only the common situations for travelers. So you will learn most of what you are likely to need. The organization is great, and it is easy to find the correct sections if you need to look something up.I'd recommend this to anyone vacationing in Italy, who would like to know some of the language for necessities, or to just enhance their experience and level of interaction with Italian people.

Worth every penny! I had done the Pimsleur's Italian CDs before my trip to Venice and Florence, but I only listened to them in the car and didn't do the readings so I while I could pronounce basic Italian I couldn't read it. This is a small compact but not tiny book that is a perfect companion to take w/ you on your trip to Italy. I LOVE that the dictionary part is both Italian to English and English to Italian! And it doesn't take up a lot of room and it spells the words in Italian the way they sound. It looks a little weird but it works. Nobody could believe I didn't study Italian in school with the combo of the CDs and this book. I put this book in the back pocket of a small travel purse where I put my glasses, sunglasses, lip balm/gloss, tissues, gum whatever and a small amount of money. I put the money I was traveling with for the day and my credit cards in a money belt. My brother told me the only time Rick Steves' was ever pick pocketed in Europe was when he didn't wear a money belt. Thank you Rick Steves.

This made our trip way better. So many tourists everywhere, this helped personalize our trip. This is for the smart traveler and helps them take it all in. If you buy this you must read it and not just skim it. I was shocked how hooked up we got using this book. This is not for everyone, if you don't want to read or care about where you are and just want to zone out and have someone do everything for you, not for you. If you want to dig into this resource and explore where you are and the people and culture, take time to carry it with you and read while your walking around. Yes, this book was in our pack, pulled it out everywhere, from North to south. I can't even imagine not having this as a resource. I would have paid way more for this load of compiled info on all our stops and things to check out. Plus Rick is the best! He makes it easy for the fish out of water to find its way. Massive thanks for this fantastic resource. Also, download his audio tours, as all the cruise line tourist sprint through all the museum with their selfie stick raised high, you can sit tight and listen to all the awesome info and insight to what makes these places amazing. Thanks Rick

Effective for what it was intended for-- an easily pocket-portable phrasebook/dictionary, with a "menu decoder" section, sections on temperature conversion, tips on the Italian culture, and valuable information for communicating in an emergency. On a recent trip to Italy I always carried this little book around in my pocket when exploring on my own, and it served me well. My only critique is that the dictionary sections of the book-- both Italian to English and English to Italian --were not quite as extensive as I would've liked, but they were adequate.(For a more in-depth [though not as portable] dictionary, I recommend the Collins Italian Dictionary Pocket Edition; I left that much larger book back at the hotel for study at night while using this smaller volume for walking around, as noted above).

AMAZING, Amazing book for intl. travel a GREAT Guide for exploring Venice, needed nothing else, and had some GREAT recommendations for "skip the line at St Mark's Basilica" great walks, etc from the St Mark Square area and nearby.I would like to see some great restaurant reviews in the future, for future editions, could not use for finding GREAT Venetian Restaurants.

This was so helpful on our trip to Italy. There are a lot of people that don't speak English in more rural areas like Lake Como but they are good sports and are willing to wait as you look up what you want to say in this book. We LOVED Italy! We were so impressed with this book that we're buying the French version to work on conversational French with our French immersion kids.
