This is a beautiful and informative volume discussing one of the greatest artists of the ancient world. Outstanding essays and photographs.
To learn about Ancient Greek culture, these vases are, in many ways, the best thing we have to learn about today. Virtually all their paintings are long gone and most surviving sculptures are Roman copies. This is what we have, the real deal. They portray not just heroes and legends, but day-to-day life and the way the Greeks saw the world and their place in it. I think anyone fascinated by the subject comes to these vases eventually. The Princeton Art Museum put up a very lovely exhibit of these beautiful vases and this is the accompanying book. The art is lively and energetic and if you can get to Princeton, it is well worth the trip. If you cannot yet are interested in the subject, this book more than suffices. The pictures are beautiful and the analyses that go with them are insightful and enlightening.
What I would like to know is whether the illustrations are in color, or if not, an estimate of what percentage of the plates are in color.
