A friend once told me that getting an autism diagnosis in mid-life was like finding the Rosetta Stone to herself. I am in awe of the practical wisdom and uplifting encouragement assembled here by these wise elders of their tribe. Author: Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the History of NeurodiversitySpectrum Women: Walking to the Beat of Autism brings us the voice of spectrum women, adding multi-faceted layers of Autism knowledge previously unavailable to Professionals and lay people alike. Throughout the chapters the writers not only share their lives, but often bare the intimate recesses of their souls with the reader. It took a long time before professionals finally understand and recognize the complexity and richness of the female profile of ASD. Spectrum Women's book is a breakthrough in many ways. First account and professionals combine their views and experience to provide rich and valuable information. I salute this initiative because this book will become a fundamental resource for the ASD community, families and professionals. I own over 15 books about autism and this ranks as #1. Jen, Barb, and the others have done an amazing job of representing female autistics. We needed our stories heard, and here they are! We are females and we are autistic. And we are proud of it! I am proud to have found my tribe. I recommend this especially to professionals who feel settled in their knowledge of what autism is.... this just might expand your insight. :)
I bought this for myself and my teen daughter. I wish I had read the chapter headings first: 1. Find Your Tribe, 3. Identity;A Beautiful Work in Progress, 4. Diversity, Gender, Intersectionality, and Feminism. These are at the beginning of the book. Three of twenty chapters, but their placement at the front of the book makes me suspect of the rest. Through the use of Leftist Terminology at the very beginning of the book, the authors have made clear that Leftist Ideology is of primary importance to these authors. NONE of these issues has anything to do with women and autism except as it applies to certain individual women who by such believes. I will not give this to my daughter. I will not read it. I will be returning it if I can and putting it in recycling if I can't
Having followed most of the authors on social media, I was still awed and amazed at the depth of knowledge these women shared. From personal safety to self care to mental health, and so much more, it is a guide for any woman affected by autism, and a great resource for professionals, friends and family, and anyone who wants to develop a deeper understanding of autism as it presents in women. Thank you!
Anyone with an autistic female in their life needs to read this book. Any autistic female looking for resources and to not feel alone in her autistic experience needs to read this book. As a spectrum woman myself it was hard to put down once I started. They are able to explain me in ways I've never been able to communicate on my own. This is an invaluable resource for autistic women everywhere. I'm recommending this book to everyone in my life.
This is a must have in any home for an autistic woman or someone learning about an autistic person. This book shows many essentials as an autistic woman that professionals need to know; understand better for diagnosis and mental health options. It explains my life and I’m sure it will help others understand their situations too.
Beginning with the prologue, I instantly related. This is spot-on and a must read.
LOVE this book!! After finding out in my 30’s that I am autistic, and as the parent of an autistic son, I wholeheartedly appreciate the experiences shared in this book. I didn’t want to put it down!
A must-read for everyone who truly wants to understand Autism. Many contributors result in many perspectives!
