These are comments on the Kindle version of the book. I am only in the third chapter, but the book is almost unusable. Some illustrations are missing - which forces you to try to do the exercises "blind". That might be overcome, but the key to doing the exercises is data set out in tables, and the Kindle doesn't keep ANY table formatting. All you have is jumble of words. I have spent hours trying to decipher a single project.I finally gave up and bought the paperback version. Now that I can see what was going on, I see that I missed a lot.I like approach, and I am enjoying the projects. There's nothing like actually doing a real-world solution to learn the ins and outs of new software. But don't waste your money on the Kindle version.
The solutions in this Book are totally useless. They can never be put in practice because they have so many errors which turn out to be total showstoppers for these applications. Shame to the persons who have reviewed the book positively, obviously they just read the book and naively believed the hype, but have never tried to implement any of the solutions. People at Microsoft Press and OReilly.com should cover their corporate faces in shame for endorsing and publishing such a piece of trash and misleading all the Newbies out there that are looking for practical examples and solution for their business problems. The authors could have never programmed and tested the solutions themselves. I have spent over a week just on one of the examples, following the instructions religiously, posting errors I found on the place for errata. So my advice do not purchase this book.
The notes about the Kindle version among the reviews are correct. Some of the tables are chopped among several pages, making them useless. I've seen similar on other Kindle made books. It's something Amazon needs to address.I bought it for Chapter 8. The example was solid, but I really wanted the details found in the options available in SharePoint Online table at the end. They hinted at a much better way to do the example. It's not the fault of a book labeled 2010. Maybe a 2013 edition can review the SharePoint Online method of building an RFP tool.
Purchased it to learn more about writing apps for SP2010, specifically "HelpDesk". Worked through the guided examples, and with some minor adjustments, got it to a decent working application. (It needs some tweaking for my environment, though). There were several lines in the instructions that were vague, but with a little effort, it made sense. For me, working with real-world projects in SharePoint 2010 is where it's at. Looking forward to try a Project Management and a Contact Management Solution for the agency.
This book is in need of alot of editing. If a user is brand new to SharePoint 2010, the numerous mistakes and missing information is going to make it next to impossible to follow their recipes for these projects. I am a bit put off by this in that this type of book needs only for the writers to build each site using their recipes to see the glaring mistakes and missing information. I started with the Help Desk application section and the very first instruction to create a custom document library was wrong (Click Site Settings and then Click More Options). Again a new user might not have been able to continue at this point leading to frustration. It should have said Click "Site Actions" and then Click "More Options". The problems continue with missing data fields that they didn't define and the custom views are requestint them for sorting and filtering. These are going to be deal breaker for a large number of new users since the data field settings are likely going to be critical later in the recipe and since the book ommited them, there is no way of knowing exactly what they were wanting or needing. I would recommend holding off until the second edition if you are new sharepoint 2010 user... if you are fairly familiar, this book could still be of value.
Perfect book for real step-by-step training
Looking forward to sharing some of these project ideas with our progam staff(power users) and will be recommending this book so they can get ideas of how to get the most out of our SharePoint platform. I don't mind some of the missing "details" in the projects as noted by a couple reviewers since the overall process is sound and easy to follow.
once again ... microsoft sux = instructions are wrong and missing steps ... the table of contents sounds great, but the "how to" behind the topics is weak, at best
