What if you could live your life over again, but without the benefit of being Bill Murray? That's the dilemma that Jeff Winston winds up facing here. When we first meet him he's in his mid-forties, stuck in a job that he doesn't seem to find as fulfilling as he used to and his marriage isn't so much unraveling as ossifying, old arguments turning into a very solid resentment that will probably last for the rest of their lives. Jeff is primed for a mid-life crisis of sorts, but instead of getting a hot young girlfriend or a new car, he gets something entirely different: a massive fatal heart attack. And that's how we start. But as you can probably tell since the book is called "Replay" and not "All the Bad Decisions I Don't Remember Making Eventually Haunt Me", Grimwood isn't so much interested in how we get here as much as what happens afterwards. And in this case, Jeff dies and wakes up . . . in 1963, with the body of his eighteen year old self and all the memories of his life from that point until he dies in the late eighties. At a loss for what to do, Jeff does what anyone else would probably do in the same situation: massively bet on the outcomes of future sports events to secure himself vast amounts of wealth and set himself up for a comfortable existence (if nothing else, this teaches me to pay more attention to who wins the World Series, as you really never know when it might come in handy) then making shrewd investments in companies that he knows will do well in the future. All is going swell, he's living his life almost exactly as he's envisioned it.Then he reaches the eighties and dies again. Thus a slight snag in the plan appears. And so it goes for this latter day Billy Pilgrim, who isn't so much unstuck in time as ricocheting back and forth like a rubber ball in the middle of two metronomes. Beyond the concept, which apparently did influence "Groundhog Day", Grimwood takes a deceptively simple writing style (I managed to polish the whole book off in about three hours max) and proceeds to milk the basic idea for all its worth. He applies a realistic filter to Jeff's first time through the merry-go-round, having him do all the things that most normal people would do in the same situation (including trying to change history . . . with unexpectedly interesting results) but by forcing him to repeat all that all over again (and again) he gives up an opportunity to keep revisiting the same scenario but with new wrinkles added each and every time. He attempts to rectify mistakes he made in his original life, tries to shake a sense of loss for what he left behind in previous run-throughs, all the while operating with the knowledge of the one thing that most of us will never know for certain: when he's going to die and how. He's not even sure if he'll come back each time but his constant struggle to both avoid his fate and try something different with his life each time makes for oddly engaging reading, as Grimwood keeps recreating the same scenarios but weighed with Jeff's knowledge of all his past lives layered on top of him, a burden he can't quite embrace nor escape. And yet Grimwood keeps making it interesting, like a wheel running over the same track again, working the groove deeper and deeper. On one of his go-rounds, Jeff comes to realize he isn't the only one reliving his life repeatedly and that wrinkle of two people trapped in overlapping loops of the same cycle, falling in love and losing each other and having to figure out how to find each other again, greatly opens up the possibilities of the book. He varies the repetition just enough so that you notice the differences more than the similarities, managing to simultaneously convey the joy of having your whole life ahead of you again, the drudgery of having to plod through the boring parts once more (I didn't mind high school and college at the time but the thought of having to go through and study for all those classes again with my old and shriveled late thirties mind is terrifying on some level) and the anxiety that comes when knowing exactly how much time you have only means that you're more aware than anyone else how absurdly little it really is. For Jeff and the woman who becomes his companion its like riding a treadmill tilted downward and coated in oil, you can fight as hard as you want to stay upright and stay on the belt but eventually you're going to fall away back to the start again. The fact that any of this succeeds is due to Grimwood's ability to give us forward momentum even when the plot is literally doubling back on itself. His imagination for the different scenarios is fantastic enough, like dropping the same actors into the same framework for a play over and over again and watching them improvise a different result based on what's gone before. He manages to keep the feel of it realistic by focusing on the characters themselves and how they react to something, both in their despairs and how they make it work (and for contrast he throws in a third person apparently experiencing the same phenomenon, whose reaction to it makes their wackiest moments seem like utter pillars of rationality), whether its buying stocks, betting on horse races, or making movies. What he doesn't do, and which I sorely appreciate, is make the focus on the book the characters' quests for the ultimate "why" this is all happening. Different explanations are floated and the reader can probably come up with their own theories, whether time itself is broken, or its aliens running an experiment or even some test from a higher power, but the characters quickly realize, as much as the reader probably will, that the explanation isn't the point. Knowing the why doesn't tell you anything beyond maybe that God as a weird sense of humor. Ultimately the characters are too busy living to worry about that and that's where the meat of the book lies, in the second and third chances that we all want but never get, the changes we make within ourselves with the weight of experience, the tragedy of loss and the joy of reconnecting and the grim certainty that even if you had all the time in the world, it would still be too little (something hammered home later when it becomes clear the intervals between dying and being reborn are becoming shorter and shorter). There's a line in one of my favorite Robert Frost poems that goes "I'd like to get away from Earth awhile/and come back to it and begin over" and here Grimwood makes us ask ourselves, what would we do if we had to do it all over again? Is fixing your mistakes (or what you perceive to be mistakes) the point? Is it the opportunity to try new things, to see if all those paths we never took would actually lead us somewhere better? Or is it simply worth the chance to revel in the day to day progression once more and not worry whether we get it right the whole time. Jeff ends the novel in nearly the exact place he began it, and yet it would be difficult to suggest he's the same person. Still, were his opportunities any better or more open than ours? You don't have to feel trapped to want to make a change and you don't need a freak spasm of time to give you an excuse. In a sense, we have it better than Jeff does for a good chunk of the book. Forced to go over the same temporal ground repeatedly, he has to make the most of limited tools and see his progress, for good or ill, erased. But for us, every day forward gives a chance to move away from where we were and push ahead to a horizon that might reside where we need to be. Within the borders of our years, we are boundless, perhaps more than we realize.

It is perhaps unfair to use "Groundhog Day" as a point of reference when discussing this book since the novel preceded the film by several years. Still, as a cultural touchstone, it is perhaps relevant. Jeff Winston ends up cycling back, not one day, but from his mid-forties to his late teens, or in terms of years, 1988 to 1963. Having 25 years to live over gives rise to a lot of opportunities to make money - from betting on the Kentucky Derby to buying the right stocks - and Jeff immediately takes advantage of this in his first (and subsequent) loops. What is less obvious is how new decisions can affect the future - his own and the world's.Author Grimwood cycles Jeff back into his own life, so that the changes he's made from cycle-to-cycle are not "saved" in the timeline. Thus, each time he's returned to the past, Kennedy can be assassinated again, he is dating the same girl, etc. How each of these iterations plays out, based on his choices and the consequences of actions in the various loops, forms the plot. To discuss it further would cause spoilers, but more importantly remove from the process of discovery that the reader and the character(s) are going on, to the detriment of the reader's enjoyment. After all, we know what's going to happen: Jeff dies in 1988 and is regenerated to replay his adult life. It's not the destination but the journey that makes the novel worth reading. And it is worth reading - this is perhaps the fastest I've finished a novel in several years. After a bit of a slow start, and once the surrounding cast is fleshed out (themselves not repeating but coming into and out of Jeff's life), you can't put the book down. Will Linda (his first wife) appear in this iteration? What happens to Judy, the college sweetheart? The poignant moments are when decisions are made that ultimately cause him to be a stranger to someone with whom he was intimate in a previous iteration, and all the loss that implies. The book is not science fiction - no attempt is made to physically explain Jeff's repeating (although he himself worries about it). There is no "Groundhog Day" requirement that Jeff grow as a person in order to escape the time loop. Rather, it is more a meditation, perhaps an "adventure", on how decisions lead to branching realities that can be either good or bad. Grimwood's writing makes it all very intriguing and grips you right to the end.

First read this in 1990 so it's nice to see that people are still commenting to this day on what, for me, is still one of my all-time favorites. At age 60 I still think about this novel and have to ask, "would someone please FINALLY give this story the cinematic version it deserves"?And why, oh why, did Ken Grimwood have to die at such a young age? The idea that he was working on a sequel at the time of his death and that we will never see it has tortured me for years. I hope he's enjoying his own Replaying. If you're up for an extremely similar (some might say totally derivative) story try The Unusual Second Life of Thomas Weaver---not nearly the impact of Replay but a simple, enjoyable read.

In case anyone is wondering it says midnight addition because it has suggestive language in it. Which is totally fine just was not expecting that! Haha

Thick pages so your colors don't bleed through. Great stress relief when I get home from hellish nursing classes.

#46,329 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The premise of this series is charming, and the first books were delightful, but with v.5 the series has been transformed from multi-volume story to situation comedy. The author has written herself into a corner: It was established in a previous volume that the team (especially mile, who has magical super-user privileges) can defeat elder dragons, so there is no way to actually challenge them. So any story will be "Girls come into town, girls are underestimated, girls show off" or "An interesting thing happens to the girls while they are wandering aimlessly".

By now people should know what to expect. The story was entertaining as always, but plot progress was a bit dissapointing. The meeting with old friends felt a bit rushed and nothing was resolved. The ending was a cliffhanger of sorts. All in all, fun to read, but felt a bit like a slice of life intermezzo.

Nothing truly relevant happens in this book, at all. The entire thing could be skipped and you wouldn't really miss much. The only time something really interesting happened was at the very last few pages, and that ended up as a cliff hanger. It's really a bit disappointing, this series is sort of like that though so I can't rate it too poorly. Hopefully the next volumes will be a little more interesting.

My expectations were totally destroyed by this fourth book. It was messy and hard to follow the story. Hope it will get better in the next.

*Heavy sigh* I really enjoyed previous books in this series but the story has all but stopped moving forward. Mile and crew continue to meander about the countryside doing 'only things that are interesting'. Previously every book has made some form of progress towards whatever the author is trying to tell storywise, however this book just feels like a filler arc that should have come out as a spinoff title. If it was more like a slice of life then that would be okay but its not.

I enjoyed the side story at the beginning.this book is the what looks like a set up of all the characters next big adventure.i wish we could have the books published faster.i know kindle is usually a couple of monts ahead but a hard book is better.i can hardly wait to see miles deal with her new adversaries.:)

Plot progression in relation to hint about intentions for a 10th book is down write frightening, but i have the feeling that a faster plot progression would cause both a decrease in quality and a painful deviation from well balanced journey.

I am still interested in this story, Mile/Adele makes me laugh every time she says something outrageous as if it was the most natural thing in the world

This is an outstanding, thorough, well done training manual for the mountaineer/alpinist. I've read it twice now, and it was even better the second time. It is not a "how to climb" book, that teaches you the knots, steps, and moves, or even a "climbing training" book, in the sense of teaching how to do on-the-rock or on-the-ice training the local rock gym or crag. There are several superb books on those subjects (Gadd's, Houston & Cosley's, Horst's, Long's, Leubben's, and more). House & Johnston is different: this book teaches you how to optimize your fitness for climbing, alpine climbing in particular, i.e., to put "more climber" behind the skills you have. The orientation is for both mountaineering and technical alpine projects - whether your goal is winter 14ers, classic alpine routes, Ruth Gorge classics, Andean or Himalayan giants, or anything within that general spectrum of casual outdoor recreation, this is your state of the art training Bible. And Lord knows, they deliver the gospel and deliver it well. House and Johnston know their stuff, from the theoretical and biological underpinnings of fitness They dispatch the tired and too-often said "just go climbing" - no athlete interested in maximizing performance "just goes climbing/running/riding." It takes more. But "more" does not just mean more often, or harder, or longer. This book tells you what "more" means - it is a thorough explanation of what the physical demands of alpine climbing actually are, what the science tells us about the best ways to train those capacities, and how to put all that together into an executable program. What, when, how much, how often, how long, how heavy, how hard . . . ALL the information you need to get in the best conditions your genes and environment allow is all there. Their treatment of aerobic capacity - why it is so crucial for what we do, and how and how NOT to organize your training to improve it - is worth the price alone. The book has many more real gems that you can put to use immediately: an "Alpine Combine," ala the famous NFL player evaluation combine, that serves as a handy means to assess and grade general fitness; a terrific, do-anywhere core sequence that lives up to its "Killer" name; weighted pullup, hill sprint, and loaded hiking cycles that are worth their weight in gold for the "bang for the buck" they deliver. Even the strength training information is stellar. I say "even," because, as a strength coach myself, I'm often disappointed or shaking my head at the mediocre, phoned-in strength prescriptions in most training-for-a-sport books. I shake it just as often at the currently popular "Crossfit" and its various knockoffs, all of which will make an unfit person much fitter, but all of which, at the same time, amount mostly to "working out to get better at our workouts," which is a far cry from working out to get better at climbing mountains. Not a deficiency here - the strength training information and advice in this book has a clear purpose (strengthen and toughen your musculoskeletal system to execute and withstand the demands of alpinism). House & Johnston lay out the stuff that works, the stuff that is relevant to our game, without cool but ultimately useless gym tricks. You don't have to do Olympic squat snatches, muscle ups on rings, or anything else that would make you ask yourself "Why am I doing this again?" You will be box stepping, leg raising, pulling on tools, etc. - if you have ever climbed anything technical and hard, you will know exactly why you are doing what you are doing. House & Johnston include a very solid menu of general strength exercises, good, clear instructions for those exercises, and some atypical movements that are highly climbing specific. Their strength programming guidance - the loads, sets, and reps that produce specific kinds of strength or strength endurance - are dead solid perfect. No lazy "three sets of 15-20 reps" drivel: they understand, provide, and explain the full complement of strength work needed (depending on the phase of training or goal), including circuits for preparatory or work capacity development, max strength sessions, and strength endurance work - all useful, all of which must be trained in very different kinds of workouts. Planning and programming information is similarly good, but has a distinct "major race" focus. House and Johnston are strong advocates for block periodization - spending sequential blocks of 2-5 months on specific components of fitness, leading to an overarching, major climb. The premise and prescribed approach is similar to, for example, the ideal training one would do for an Ironman, the Boston Marathon, or a championship meet in any similar sport - basically organizing the entire year toward one big audacious goal. That makes their specific planning prescriptions most suitable to climbers who build toward one or perhaps two major climbs or expeditions each year. If you are going to a big range for a bucket-list climb, this is exactly how to be in the best shape of your life for that trip - and why you need to begin that training about a year out. The book is less specific for one whose goal is closer to "high fitness year round." The authors point out, accurately, that it is impossible to be in your absolute best shape all the time - you have to build to that, and peak for it, and they show precisely how. But it would be a mistake to regard this book's value as limited to "training for an expedition." The concepts and workouts can easily be modified and used, in my opinion, by people who are less oriented around some huge annual or semi-annual project, and instead need to stay at a high level of fitness for various climbs and tick lists over their summer rock, shoulder alpine, and winter ice seasons. The authors' base and strength-endurance periods, for example, can be melded into an undulating periodization scheme that varies emphasis and exercise mode by the season, with transitions and 2-3 month builds toward the longer or more important climbs on the calendar. Some of us know how to do that, but I suspect others don't, and I'd like to see House & Johnston in the second edition include at least a chapter for the climber who isn't necessarily preparing for THE BIG CLIMB, but wants to stay in great shape over the course of a typical year and knock out a couple or three dozen significant alpine, ice or rock climbs during that year. Those folks, too, can be much fitter, and climb much better and more safely than if they "just go climbing" and practice random acts of exercise. Would love to see these authors comment on how they would organize the training of the avid weekend or twice-a-month alpinist across the seasons. Climbers will also appreciate their solid, no-nonsense nutrition section, which provides solid guidance on performance eating during training and on climbs. What they say works, every time, as opposed to "diets with names," which are hit or miss at best, and may work for Jill but not for Jane, and many of which border on stupid for an alpine athlete. Bottom line: Terrific book, well written, well organized, given the breadth of subject covered, and lavishly "iced" with relevant stories and sidebars from many of alpinism's leading lights and superb action photos. If you train to climb mountains, especially big challenging ones, where superb conditioning is a necessity more than a luxury, buy this book.

Bought this book before attempting Mt. Shasta and Mt. Rainier. I have a bit of experience with hiking 14ers and a lot of experience backpacking multiple day trips. All the info in this book is great, and the explanations of why to train their way makes sense. Not just for climbing, there are a lot of specific exercises to do for climbing, but I think any long outdoor endurance sport can use the info in this book. Their approach is nice, especially for people like me, where I have a small amount of experience but most of the things in this book they discuss will really hammer home how important it is to train, not just exercise. For the last year(s) I've subscribed to the HIIT 4x4 type programs. This book doesn't have much good to say about that approach. Their exercise plans are built on decades(or centuries) old methods that have worked for athletes way above my level and so should also work for me. Their exercise plans are very flexible and most of the effort to figuring out how much effort and time to put in is up to you, but that's a Pro in my book, and after a good 7 months of training I'll know how well the exercises worked. Will update the review at that time, after comparing to my comrades who are doing the "new" style of training.

I've been an amateur climber/mountaineer for 20 years now. I haven't been as active over the last 10 years with career and family duties, but I'm slowly getting back into it. I've found that after a decade of significantly reduced activity that its very difficult to train without hurting myself. This book doesn't really address this issue directly, but it gives a good overview of how to train in general so that you are alert and aware of the quality of your workouts so that you can make adjustments as necessary to prevent injury. It also gives you a realistic outlook on how long and gradual the training process really is. I can't do what I did in my 20's, which was basically train for a month, climb the mountain, and then let my body heal from all the damage I did in the process.I've always wondered why some mountains went better than others. After reading this book it has become very clear to me what I did right training for certain mountains and what I've done wrong on others. It's all about developing that aerobic base, but in this book it shows you how to really build that aerobic base far beyond anything I've done before by coupling the aerobic training with max strength training. I have not gotten to that part of the training program yet and I'm a little nervous about how my joints will hold up moving that type of strength training. The book definitely seems more catered to alpinists that are already in excellent shape.I bought this book a couple months ago and am on week 6 now of my tranisition period. My one complaint about this book is the starting volume one should begin with in their transition period is poorly described. For example, I estimated I trained about 5 hours per week last year, which works out to about 260 hours. This is slightly above what they estimate for working professionals. In the transition period it is suggested that we divide our training volume by 2 to get the number of hours per week that we train during transition. That works out to 2.5 hours per week, which isn't much. The strength training workouts last about 45 minutes for me and at twice a week that only leaves one hour for aerobic training, which is supposed to be where we're spending the bulk of our time. I found a post on [...]where someone asks this question. Scott Johnston answered the question and said that 2.5 hours was not very much and he was wondering why someone would need to exercise that little. He did say that if one were to exercise that little each week then you would not count your strength training sessions towards your training time each week. He did clarify that it's very subjective what your initial training volume should be. However, the subjectivity here becomes so overwhelming that it is extremely difficult to determine a starting point. It would be helpful if there was a little more direction for the non-professional climber.Overall though most of this book is excellent and will help assist the amateur climber to accomplish things that they once thought were only attainable when they were younger and missed the boat. For someone pushing 40 I find this book to be very encouraging as I now feel there is a way to train where my chances of getting injured are minimized. I would highly recommend this book to anyone I know that is serious about alpinism.

This book takes the reader on a chronological journey through the development of six important innovations: glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light. It does a beautiful job of conveying factual information clearly, while also painting a larger picture of how collaboration and determination drive technological advancement. The combination of broad thematic ideas and more challenging sentence structure makes this a perfect text to discuss as a class or in small close reading groups. As another review mentioned, there is one mention of sex in the "Light" chapter, in reference to human nighttime routines. Don't let you put this off from teaching this book or using it in the classroom! Given the fact that it is brief and non-graphic, this reference seems to me (while not ideal given the giggle factor) appropriate for a 5/6th grade classroom, especially given the overall content of the book.

How We Got to Now was originally published for an adult audience. When they were making the television series for PBS they wanted to attract a younger audience (younger than retirement age). What happened was that families were enjoying the series with their grade school students – that is how this book came about. There is a lot of fascinating information in the book showing the history of glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light. As is usually the case, the author’s world view comes out in his writing. There are multiple references to the age of the earth which support an evolutionary stand point. Some of them really didn’t seem to be necessary – most of the time, the story could have been told without the reference to millions of years – I usually tell me students “a long time ago”. There are also references to things which are not provable – there are no eyewitness reports to what the author presents – for example how glass was first formed is speculation not verifiable fact. There is one reference of even greater concern given the intended audience of the book. During the discussion of light, the author mentions that before artificial light “When darkness fell, they drifted into ‘first sleep’ and woke after four hours or so to snack, relieve themselves, have sex, or chat by the fire.” The comment about having sex could just as well been left out for the intended audience of upper elementary and middle school students. Librarians need to keep these things in mind when determining if this book is appropriate for their audience. The chapter on Glass takes the reader from how glass was possibly formed for the first time, before recorded history, through the development of glass production and uses to the many ways glass is used today in our everyday lives. In the chapter on Cold we are exposed to the first person who attempted to sell ice in the tropics, through the uses of ice as they were developed in the food industry, to the discovery of how to keep homes and buildings cool even in the hottest months. Sound moves from the acoustics in caves on to the use of a cadaver ear for experimentation to the creation of the telephone and radio. Cleanliness isn’t something we necessarily think about all the time, yet in Clean we learn about the lack of cleanliness in the 19th Century. The development of sewage drainage, is followed by the importance of hand washing and then the sneaky way in which chlorinated water was first introduced. Time – it didn’t matter in the beginning what time it was on a clock. As the world changed and became more industrialized, time became more important – time zones were developed. As time became more important, the need for more and more accurate clocks came about. The book ends with a chapter on Light which looks at life before artificial light, the creation of candlelight, the discovery of sperm whales, the use of fossil fuels, and the creation of light bulbs. In each of these chapters we learn about the different players who got us from then to now. In many cases there was more than one person headed to the same goal and one invention depended on the findings of someone else. The book really shows the interconnectedness of science.I want to thank Viking – Penguin Books for the review copy in exchange for my honest review. While this book is designed for upper elementary students, I will be placing it in the secondary section of the school library where I work. I encourage librarians to get a copy and read it for themselves to determine if How We Got To Now by Steven Johnson is appropriate for their audience.

Living in a country where we have access to clean water, electricity, and indoor plumbing, we sometimes take simple luxuries for granted. Most people take for granted small luxuries that weren't available to the masses a few years ago. Innovation doesn't start overnight, most people notice a problem and utilize discoveries to create new solutions. This book highlights six innovations that helped make the modern world as we know it today. The book is organized into six topics - glass, cold, sound, clean, time, light.I found the book to be interesting and informative. It was easy to read and understand. I like how the book connected ice blocks to movie theaters and modern conveniences such as fridges. I found the book to be enjoyable and perfect for all ages. The book reminded me of my history textbooks but, this was definitely more fun to read.
