This is a beautiful and informative volume discussing one of the greatest artists of the ancient world. Outstanding essays and photographs.

To learn about Ancient Greek culture, these vases are, in many ways, the best thing we have to learn about today. Virtually all their paintings are long gone and most surviving sculptures are Roman copies. This is what we have, the real deal. They portray not just heroes and legends, but day-to-day life and the way the Greeks saw the world and their place in it. I think anyone fascinated by the subject comes to these vases eventually. The Princeton Art Museum put up a very lovely exhibit of these beautiful vases and this is the accompanying book. The art is lively and energetic and if you can get to Princeton, it is well worth the trip. If you cannot yet are interested in the subject, this book more than suffices. The pictures are beautiful and the analyses that go with them are insightful and enlightening.

What I would like to know is whether the illustrations are in color, or if not, an estimate of what percentage of the plates are in color.

The Good: This book has a lot of interesting historical information about the 1918 flu pandemic, as well as some about H5N1. It is well written, and flows easily.The Mediocre: There is a lot of historical information regarding the events leading up to the 1918 flu pandemic, especially about World War 1. I really wasn't expecting to read so much about the first World War, though it is useful information to put the 1918 flu pandemic into perspective, and so this was OK, however as the book has 30 pages of bibliography, there really is less talking about the flu, such as what the health authorities were thinking, and more ink spent on historical information. Also, the book seems to be written at the young adult level, so it is not as comprehensive as I would have liked.The Not-So-Good: Some of the science is wrong, although the author makes a spirited attempt to explain the flu virus and how it replicates in the human body in plain terms. Such as when the author states that chemicals called "cytokines" detect the invading flu virus, when in fact it is the cells of the immune system that do the detecting and then release messenger molecules like cytokines. Unexpectedly, the author segues into bioterrorism at the end of the book, and the question of will another naturally occurring flu pandemic like the 1918 flu happen again is, somewhat predictably, not answered as really nobody can answer that question.Conclusion: This is not a comprehensive book on the 1918 Flu, or influenza, though the historical details are interesting. I didn't get what I was looking for, (this isn't a scientific or expert perspective), but I got a lot of great historical context and information to help me understand some of what people experienced at the time.

Public library book. Not purchased. Good book explaining the terrible influenza pandemic of 1918. Gives good background info and context for the terrible pandemic. Easy to understand and follow. Logical and concise. Very well done. Explains basic mechanics of flu virus and how something akin to the 1918 pandemic could strike again. Probably exceedingly cogent in 2018, given the almost constant budget cuts imposed on government agencies. Does highlight in a few places how religious charlatans have been a thorn in the side to good science.

This is a good book on the United States' medical malpractice system. It summarizes hundreds of studies and academic articles in a readable way. The book briefly touches on the concerns and viewpoints of each the main participants in this complicated system: doctors, hospitals, patients, lawyers, insurers, and reinsurers.Sloan and Chepke evaluate the arguments of each side fairly. For instance, they disagree with hospital and doctors associations and show that there is not an "epidemic" of medmal litigation which is causing health care costs to skyrocket; they also show that the number of claims does not dwarf the number legitimate iatrogenic injuries. However, the authors also admit that the system is too irrational---bad doctors don't get sued significantly less than good doctors, and there is little evidence that the medmal system has improved patient safety.One really nice aspect of the book is that they provide a useful framework and distinctions for evaluating many claims and arguments. For instance, they point out that "defensive" medicine isn't necessarily bad---we should distinguish positive (which helps patients and is worth the cost) and defensive (harmful or unnecessary) defensive medicine.As for their suggested reforms, I personally agree with their suggestion that greater experience rating and insurance purchasing at the hospital level should help. However, I think they are overly optimistic about government intervention in reinsurance markets would be productive---the authors underestimate the difficulties of predicting the insurance cycle and the amount of politics that would be involved in setting adequate rates.

Very well written, easy to read and well organized. It provides an overall picture of medical malpractice, evaluating the most relevant tort reforms and other alternatives.

A good book on a contentious topic. Written by an experienced health care economist and an attorney, the authors attempt to provide a broad perspective on medical malpractice. Sloan and Chepke agree that there are serious problems with medical malpractice, but not the problems generally discussed in most public forums. The intermittant public attention paid to this issue is driven often by intermittant malpractice 'crises' in which insurers withdraw from markets, premiums escalate sharply, and there is fear of consequent physician withdrawal from states with sharply rising premiums. A common popular perception of these crises is that they are driven by excessive tort litigation and awards. In fact, there is little evidence for this explanation and recurrent malpractice insurance crises apparently have their roots in other phenomena, notably cyclical features of the insurance industry. Another common public point of discussion is that malpractice litigation is a significant contributor to rising health care costs. The available evidence, however, suggests that malpractice torts have at best a modest effect on health care costs.Where Sloan and Chepke see major problems with malpractice torts is their apparent failure to have an impact on the high rate of serious medical errors in the USA. In addition, the data cited by Sloan and Chepke indicates that the tort system does a poor and inefficient job of compensating individuals injured through negligence. Sloan and Chepke discuss the first generation of tort reforms which are mainly caps on awards. The major effects of these reforms has been indeed to reduce awards, claims, and insurance premiums with the primary beneficiaries being physicians and insurers. It appears that first generation reforms are a stereotypical example of successful interest group lobbying of state legislatures with modest general public benefits.Much of the book is a systematic discussion of proposed reforms including such topics as alternative dispute resolution, specialized health courts, no-fault procedures, and a number of others. These discussions are generally thorough, contain nice summaries of the usually limited evidence, and discouraging in the sense that Sloan and Chepke demonstrate the uncertainties that any proposed reforms will work and point out the pragmatic political obstacles to most of these proposed reforms.Sloan and Chepke conclude with a chapter proposing a series of modest reforms, particularly focused on making hospitals or hospital systems the focus on malpractice litigation in the hope that this will produce incentives to improve patient safety. This is reasonable and approaches like the one proposed are used by some academic hospital systems where physicians are employees.Sloan and Chepke may make a couple of errors. As they point out, the tort system does a poor job of identifying and compensating meritorious claims. At the same time, a lot of claims pursued do lack merit. But this irrational element is one of the things that physicians most dislike about the present system. While the tort system may not be the 'lottery' claimed by many critics, its irrational enough to be worrisome to health care providers. There is also some recent evidence that some forms of torts do reduce medical errors. Nonetheless, Sloan and Chepke's analysis is convincing and their modest suggestions for reform quite reasonable.

I bought this book and its companion "Understanding the FFT" to add to my basic knowledge of Fourier transforms. I need to know how to implement FTs and so far these books have been a better reference for this than any of the others I've read. Aquiring this practical understanding has been made much easier. I own both the Understanding the FFT volume and its companion, Understanding FFT Applications. They have their place on my technical bookshelf. If you are new to the FFT, or just so-so with undergrad level engineering math, then this series of volumes on the FFT is likely to prove a gold mine. If you eventually tire of being taught by example at a sometimes slow and tedious pace after you are exposed to the basics, look elsewhere.The complete titles of the books say it all. They are tutorials for laymen, students, technicians and working engineers. They are NOT sophisticated. If you are seeking enough understanding to grasp some fundamentals by example they can be highly recommended as a place to start.Unfortunately, despite its strengths, the series feeds into the "this is all you have to know if you are a practical person" mentality frequently expressed by many I've met in the technical areas. The ideas of "practical and useful" should always be qualified by the terms "for what and to whom". It all depends on who you are and what you are trying to do.It is true that sometimes it is better to cut to the heart of the matter with simplistic approaches, but challenging problems are not all reducible to these kinds of "seat of the pants" approaches. The trick is knowing when to "hold or fold". Sometimes it is actually more "practical" to acquire a more sohpisticated approach to a subject, as it saves huge amounts of time and effort later on, and can provide insights that are not initially obvious.Fourier transforms are a sophisticated mathematical tool with broad applications frequently found in areas where analysis of complex data sets is important. They are not just "tools for the working engineer". If you are serious about mastering them, you must spend the time and effort.This series is a good place to start, it is hardly the final definitive text, even for the working technical person who wants a powerful understanding of the subject. If you want some good powerful intros to the subject at a more advanced level, just look at the Bibliography of Understanding the FFT.

HiI've bought this book for having a deeper inside into algorithms and techniques for doing fft with micro's and little circuits for RF and audio purposes. I think, it's a very good source for working with - it's straightforward for those, who will do their own processes with every type of micro or pc. I rate this book with all stars.

Discernment by Henri Nouwen is at the top if not the best book on spiritual discernment I have read so far. I believe all of us would like to understand better how to discern not just God's voice in our daily lives but also the various signs and calls we sense. This book adds a much needed element to spiritual formation and following God.Preface: What This Book Is AboutDiscernment, is about reading the signs of daily life to “remember God” (memoria Dei), God’s time (kairos).Foreword: Henri’s Way of DiscernmentInstead of seeking a life free from pain and suffering, we should trust that Jesus is present in our pain and suffering. Henri believed that we can discern the depths of our lives and vocation only if we surrender our ego-centered view of reality.Discernment is a discipline and practice that requires us to cultivate trust, love, faith, hope, and courage.When we accept our complete belovedness, we stop judging ourselves and other people; as a result, other people begin to feel safe with us.Chapter One: Embracing the Practice in Solitude and CommunityIf a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.I found that my anger and my desire to be special and to be admired all bubbled up in my times of solitude.Most important is how we read— not to understand or control God, but to be understood and formed by God.Discernment grows out of the life of faith rooted in community.Discernment reveals new priorities, directions, and gifts from God.Our desire to be successful, well liked, and influential becomes increasingly less important as we come closer to God’s heart.We have the freedom to say yes to God’s call and to choose to live it in very specific ways.Thus God has a real chance to form us into lights in the darkness, a source of hope for many in the world. I picked up *Discernment* by Nouwen a few weeks ago with a dual interest: I was eager to read the next book in Nouwen's spirituality trilogy and I was beginning to experience new turbulence within my workplace which created desire for wisdom in navigation.What I received was very helpful, very formative guidance in the practice of listening.There wasn't much that was profound, per se, in Nouwen's writing this time, but this is his genius writing on discernment. Discernment isn't wisdom from the sky that enables you to connect the dots toward fulfilling your dreams. Instead, discernment is becoming awake to the Voice of God that we read recorded in the Scriptures and which speaks to us in the same way through friends, experiences, and desires - all which are things that re-member the words we've previously read from the Bible.The goal, Nouwen wrote (and I paraphrase) is to be formed in the likeness of Christ, and to thus participate in God's mission of redemption, right where God has us. So again, the practice of discernment is the practice of listening; it's more an act of submission rather than discovering the route of more control.Early on, *Discernment* writes out a theology of discernment that illumines a true intent for discernment (what I paraphrased above).The remainder of the book takes an memoir-like stroll through Henri's life as he teaches the practice of paying attention to God. These journeys are like journal entries that unpack an earlier statement in the book:"I can see no other path to discernment than to be committed to a life of unceasing prayer and contemplation, a life of deep communion with the Spirit of God. Such a life will slowly develop in us an inner sensitivity, enabling us to distinguish between the law of the flesh and the law of the Spirit." (p.24)My "take-away" from the book is the reminder that to be truly discerning of God's will and desire, one must be immersed in the words and ways of God that are most vividly revealed in the Gospels and the rest of Scripture. Familiarity with God's Voice will make it easier to hear and follow God's will and desires, things that will always end up looking like (and forming us to be like) Jesus.This means that discernment will be hard to receive through a simple trick or through a short stint of prayer, no matter how earnest. A well discerned and well lived life will be the Spirit's gift through a disciplined immersion in the Scriptures, in prayer, in community, and in the presence of the poor.[Final Note: *Discernment*, like Nouwen's *Spiritual Direction* and *Spiritual Formation* are post-humous collections of Henri's thoughts and words taken from class notes, journals, and books. Friends of his have collected these and placed them into a book format that feels quite seamless. They must have known him quite well.]

To be precise, the book's contents were collated from Nouwen's unpublished spiritual writings by Michael J. Christensen and Rebecca Laird. However, Nouwen's voice is preserved. Not all theoretical practices but Nouwen shares his own experience of discernment, of how discernment is an act in waiting (passion), of how we should first know who we are (beloved child of God) before we asked what is God's purpose for us. Nouwen is grounded in human experience and is empathetic that following Christ is not easy. However it is possible if we believe and understand that Christ is with us till the end of time. Reflection questions at the end of each chapter may not be easy pieces for everyone, but then in kairos time, we may get our answers. :-) I enjoy the three Appendices at the end of the book.

Each chapter concludes with a set of questions. Although good to read for the individual, this book seems more suitable for community, an ideal Nouwen promotes. The author's text reveals his quest for a deeper relationship with Christ and various efforts to find it. It reads in places like a diary of a late-life memoir. Nouwen quotes extensively from Merton, a little too much, I felt. He mentions many times the L'arche community in which he found his truest calling. I did find much authenticity in Nouwen's words as indicated by my many highlights.

I am so grateful to the Henri Nouwen Foundation and those people who had the privilege of perusing Nouwen's journals, lecture notes, and previous publications to provide us with this delightful and useful book. It isn't a quick read; I've not yet finished it because I want to savor the words and ideas.This book gives evidence that the influence of Henri Nouwen lives beyond his earthly life!
