Last year I read Carly Simon's own memoir, Boys In The Trees and was blown away by how brilliant it is.I wanted more and recently went back to this AMAZING trilogy from Sheila Weller featuring the life and careers of Carly, Carole and Joni.I'd already read it 3 times but that didn't stop me.It's a very rare thing when a biography can tell one life well, keeping you riveted right to the last page.This time you get three!What a brilliant example of painstakingly well-researched and 'foot-noted' writing all the while being 'I can't put this down' entertaining.Ms Weller does an incredible job of weaving the three careers together showcasing how monumentally important they were at a time when Rock music was dominated by men.(Well it still is, but these 3 women broke through when there were few to none before them.)

"Girls Like Us" reads like a very long "Vanity Fair" celebrity profile. Author Sheila Weller dishes wheelbarrows full of gossip while ambitiously striving to place and evaluate her subjects--popular signer-songwriters Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon--in the broader cultural context of the fast-changing roles of American women who came of age in the 1960s. I remembered listening to King's "It's Too Late," Simon's "You're So Vain," and Mitchell's "Help Me" on my little transistor radio as a kid. When I heard about "Girls Like Us," I knew I would read it. Once I picked it up, I had no desire to put it down.Other reviewers have induced gales of laughter calling out Weller's stylistic idiosyncrasies. While she maintains a zippy pace and sometimes has good insights, she writes many long sentences filled with hyphen-linked-adjective-chain descriptions (and parenthetical asides), and *footnote references into which she drops yet more names that she couldn't quite figure out how to shoehorn into the main text, which can leave a was-that-really-necessary taste in the reader's mouth (and speaking of taste, one of Carly's favorite restaurants was Elaine's, where she would lunch with Mia Farrow, who lost touch with Carly when she stated dating Woody Allen). Moving on . . .In spite of the inconsistent writing, I think most women of a certain age will find "Girls Like Us" as much fun to read as I did, at least until the end. Weller brings her subjects' childhoods to life and carries them along the road to fame, reporting in sometimes excruciating detail their bad choices in men and their resultant heartbreaks. I am no expert but Weller also seems to know enough about music that, without too much technical detail, she can explain to the lay reader why the songs worked as well as they did. You come to feel like you know Mitchell and Simon. King is more enigmatic as a person but gets involved in some interesting environmental activism.These women were all pioneers in claiming creative and personal autonomy among male contemporaries who had been brought up expecting women to be old-school and who called wives and girlfriends their "old ladies." They achieved dizzying levels of professional respect and material success. But among them they have eight failed marriages, and today their music is relegated to oldies stations. Maybe they are more content than Weller lets on. But you will find no happy denouement to lives lived in the brave, crazy fast lane in "Girls Like Us."

I loved this book. I lived through this era and could relate to all the singers. I liked the way the author wove the women's lives into the socio-political context of the times and used them to exemplify women's changing roles in US society. I also liked the structure of the book, the way the women's stories were interspersed in chapters, so that the stories alternated and weren't told individually in straightforward, linear fashion. After reading the book, I went out and bought a number of their CDs and dug through my attic and found many of the same recordings on vinyl. What a nice journey back into my youth through words and music. In fact, as I read the book (on my Kindle), I wished I could click on a link and listen to the songs that were being discussed. A CD to accompany the book would have been nice, though I know gaining the rights to the recordings would have been challenging. I was sorry when the book ended, and I bought copies for friends and relatives to enjoy too. I also recommended it to friends of mine, women "of a certain age" like me, to read with their women's book clubs.

As an overly sensitive and dramatic thirteen year old, I was obsessed with Joni Mitchell's "Blue." I would race home from school, throw myself on my tie-dyed comforter and cry as I listened to Joni sing "A Case of You." I wanted to grow up to be "cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark café." Three years later it was "Court and Spark" and "Down to You." "Everything comes and goes, marked by lovers and styles of clothes." And 1976, the Bi-Centennial and my high school graduation, brought "Hejira." I thought if I ever had a daughter I would name her Amelia. I would play the live version for her with Pat Metheny's inspiring guitar solo so she could understand. I can tell you the story of my life through Joni Mitchell's music. The same goes for Carole King's "Tapestry" and Carly Simon's many hits. So imagine my delight to find Sheila Weller's terrific "Girls Like Us." This collection of stories about these groundbreaking women, their beginnings, their loves and losses, and most of all the SONGS... well, I devoured it in a matter of hours. The details and the well-researched facts ran down my chin like juice from a ripe peach. Ms. Weller is a journalist with the heart of a novelist. Anyone with an interest in music history and women's struggles to make it in the male-dominated world of rock'n'roll will find this book a source of unending pleasure.

This is an extremely detailed and impeccably researched social history of the women who made history in music during a male-dominated time. These women held their own in a business not friendly to young women, especially then. The book brought back memories of struggles we all had in our chosen professions. Looking back, we can see how courageous even the most anonymous of us were. For young women who now take for granted the trails we blazed, this history will prove to be a crucial reminder of what we fought for, and how fragile our wins remain.

As a school psychologist I see the value, importance and relevance of teaching minfulness in the school. I see so many students with symptoms of anxiety, depression and minds that just seem difficult to slow down. Helping students understand how their brains work so that they are in control rather than their brain helps them use better practices to make better choices. I have used this curriculum over the course of this school year and have had positive comments of the curriculum's effectiveness from both students, parents and teachers. I recommend this curriculum in any format, class-wide, small group, individually, and I have even implemented at home with my two young boys.

I bought this to use with my 6th graders and the lessons are great. It references these student work pages on page 156 however, the book doesn't have page 156. It doesn't have the student work pages at all. I even went online to their website and I can not find them anywhere. I have also emailed them and have received no response. I was so excited about this book and now I'm just disappointed.

I am a middle school counselor and used this curriculum in a multi age classroom last school year. I have been trying to introduce mindfulness to students in my school and this book is a great resource. It is a great comprehensive curriculum. I love how it describes the brain and it's functions to students so they understand how their body processes their emotions. I will use every year in my school! Highly recommend for anyone working with youth!

This is one of the most exciting programs that I know about for teaching children how their brains works and what happens when their behavior is out of control. Focusing on how they can change their attitudes is an amazing way to combat many challenges and anger issues throughout their lives.I introduced this program to my grandson’s preschool and kindergarten science teacher in Tucson AZ. She loved the program and found these beautiful little minds got it right away!! The first time one of them requested a “brain break” it reinforced her enthusiasm for teaching the program and providing positive experiences in other areas of teaching. She told me this program has made a tremendous difference in way these children focus their attention.

Not as user friendly as I had expected, but good content. I wish it was more formatted for actual classroom lessons, similar to Second Step. You need to supplement with many other visuals to really engage the students. I like the poster that is included.

By far one of my favorite curricula. I teach middle school Social Skills and used this with my 8th graders. The lessons are so easy to read with great background as to why each lesson is important and my students had so much fun! If I had to say one negative thing it would be that I had to adapt/omit some portions of lessons as they were a bit too childish for my kids. This was no biggy though and will not effect my rating.

Our school Behaviorsl Consultant suggested I read this book. I had been wanting to incorporate brain research. This is a terrific way to weave academics, psychology, and collaborative multiple intelligence activities together. It provides a foundation and lots of options. Great for teaming in Jr High general and special education planning. Excited to start using it with GLAD training (language acquisition for English Language Learners).

Really well done. I'm a therapist and I adapt this book for my older clients to teach mindfulness.

To learn about Ancient Greek culture, these vases are, in many ways, the best thing we have to learn about today. Virtually all their paintings are long gone and most surviving sculptures are Roman copies. This is what we have, the real deal. They portray not just heroes and legends, but day-to-day life and the way the Greeks saw the world and their place in it. I think anyone fascinated by the subject comes to these vases eventually. The Princeton Art Museum put up a very lovely exhibit of these beautiful vases and this is the accompanying book. The art is lively and energetic and if you can get to Princeton, it is well worth the trip. If you cannot yet are interested in the subject, this book more than suffices. The pictures are beautiful and the analyses that go with them are insightful and enlightening.

The Good: This book has a lot of interesting historical information about the 1918 flu pandemic, as well as some about H5N1. It is well written, and flows easily.The Mediocre: There is a lot of historical information regarding the events leading up to the 1918 flu pandemic, especially about World War 1. I really wasn't expecting to read so much about the first World War, though it is useful information to put the 1918 flu pandemic into perspective, and so this was OK, however as the book has 30 pages of bibliography, there really is less talking about the flu, such as what the health authorities were thinking, and more ink spent on historical information. Also, the book seems to be written at the young adult level, so it is not as comprehensive as I would have liked.The Not-So-Good: Some of the science is wrong, although the author makes a spirited attempt to explain the flu virus and how it replicates in the human body in plain terms. Such as when the author states that chemicals called "cytokines" detect the invading flu virus, when in fact it is the cells of the immune system that do the detecting and then release messenger molecules like cytokines. Unexpectedly, the author segues into bioterrorism at the end of the book, and the question of will another naturally occurring flu pandemic like the 1918 flu happen again is, somewhat predictably, not answered as really nobody can answer that question.Conclusion: This is not a comprehensive book on the 1918 Flu, or influenza, though the historical details are interesting. I didn't get what I was looking for, (this isn't a scientific or expert perspective), but I got a lot of great historical context and information to help me understand some of what people experienced at the time.

Logical and concise. Very well done. Explains basic mechanics of flu virus and how something akin to the 1918 pandemic could strike again. Probably exceedingly cogent in 2018, given the almost constant budget cuts imposed on government agencies. Does highlight in a few places how religious charlatans have been a thorn in the side to good science.

This is a good book on the United States' medical malpractice system. It summarizes hundreds of studies and academic articles in a readable way. The book briefly touches on the concerns and viewpoints of each the main participants in this complicated system: doctors, hospitals, patients, lawyers, insurers, and reinsurers.Sloan and Chepke evaluate the arguments of each side fairly. For instance, they disagree with hospital and doctors associations and show that there is not an "epidemic" of medmal litigation which is causing health care costs to skyrocket; they also show that the number of claims does not dwarf the number legitimate iatrogenic injuries. However, the authors also admit that the system is too irrational---bad doctors don't get sued significantly less than good doctors, and there is little evidence that the medmal system has improved patient safety.One really nice aspect of the book is that they provide a useful framework and distinctions for evaluating many claims and arguments. For instance, they point out that "defensive" medicine isn't necessarily bad---we should distinguish positive (which helps patients and is worth the cost) and defensive (harmful or unnecessary) defensive medicine.As for their suggested reforms, I personally agree with their suggestion that greater experience rating and insurance purchasing at the hospital level should help. However, I think they are overly optimistic about government intervention in reinsurance markets would be productive---the authors underestimate the difficulties of predicting the insurance cycle and the amount of politics that would be involved in setting adequate rates.

Very well written, easy to read and well organized. It provides an overall picture of medical malpractice, evaluating the most relevant tort reforms and other alternatives.

A good book on a contentious topic. Written by an experienced health care economist and an attorney, the authors attempt to provide a broad perspective on medical malpractice. Sloan and Chepke agree that there are serious problems with medical malpractice, but not the problems generally discussed in most public forums. The intermittant public attention paid to this issue is driven often by intermittant malpractice 'crises' in which insurers withdraw from markets, premiums escalate sharply, and there is fear of consequent physician withdrawal from states with sharply rising premiums. A common popular perception of these crises is that they are driven by excessive tort litigation and awards. In fact, there is little evidence for this explanation and recurrent malpractice insurance crises apparently have their roots in other phenomena, notably cyclical features of the insurance industry. Another common public point of discussion is that malpractice litigation is a significant contributor to rising health care costs. The available evidence, however, suggests that malpractice torts have at best a modest effect on health care costs.Where Sloan and Chepke see major problems with malpractice torts is their apparent failure to have an impact on the high rate of serious medical errors in the USA. In addition, the data cited by Sloan and Chepke indicates that the tort system does a poor and inefficient job of compensating individuals injured through negligence. Sloan and Chepke discuss the first generation of tort reforms which are mainly caps on awards. The major effects of these reforms has been indeed to reduce awards, claims, and insurance premiums with the primary beneficiaries being physicians and insurers. It appears that first generation reforms are a stereotypical example of successful interest group lobbying of state legislatures with modest general public benefits.Much of the book is a systematic discussion of proposed reforms including such topics as alternative dispute resolution, specialized health courts, no-fault procedures, and a number of others. These discussions are generally thorough, contain nice summaries of the usually limited evidence, and discouraging in the sense that Sloan and Chepke demonstrate the uncertainties that any proposed reforms will work and point out the pragmatic political obstacles to most of these proposed reforms.Sloan and Chepke conclude with a chapter proposing a series of modest reforms, particularly focused on making hospitals or hospital systems the focus on malpractice litigation in the hope that this will produce incentives to improve patient safety. This is reasonable and approaches like the one proposed are used by some academic hospital systems where physicians are employees.Sloan and Chepke may make a couple of errors. As they point out, the tort system does a poor job of identifying and compensating meritorious claims. At the same time, a lot of claims pursued do lack merit. But this irrational element is one of the things that physicians most dislike about the present system. While the tort system may not be the 'lottery' claimed by many critics, its irrational enough to be worrisome to health care providers. There is also some recent evidence that some forms of torts do reduce medical errors. Nonetheless, Sloan and Chepke's analysis is convincing and their modest suggestions for reform quite reasonable.
