I already had several books about Beatrix Potter but I wanted one that really showcased her art and covered the range of what she painted. Many people only know her from her children's books (Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Mrs. Tiggywinkle, and so on). She also was an excellent landscape painter and I enjoyed seeing those works; her painting of lily pads reminded me of Monet. She was a naturalist all of her life and kept mice, rabbits, lizards, insects, all kinds of animals, in and around her house both growing up and as an adult. Her illustrations of fungi, insects, spiders, salamanders, and butterflies are truly amazing, so good, in fact, that a field guide was made from her fungi illustrations of which she made 450. In her mycology studies (study of fungi), she was one of the first people to discover how spores and fungal reproduction worked.
this was a gift for a B. Potter fan. It was reviewed as a children's book in the WSJ, but it is really written for adults. Children would enjoy the pictures, but the contents is detailed information about her life and work. It is a wonderful book for those who want to know more about her and her life.
This book is filled with meaningful details about the life of this wonderful author. In addition to the many sketches she used as the basis for her finished works are recounts of the many people who inspired and encouraged her throughout her life. This would be great for young people to read on their own or to use in a group setting as part of a study of how to succeed.
I gave this book to my wife who is a huge Beatrix Potter fan and she loves it. My wife owns numerous books about Beatrix Potter, but without a doubt, this is her favorite. I have gone through the book myself and I am so impressed by her amazing art, so much of which I have never seen. This is truly a beautiful book.
I was honestly hoping for much more from this book, more original illustrations in particular, especially of her beloved woodland creatures. Unfortunately for me, most of the watercolor paintings that were selected for this book were of landscape paintings :-( The major focus of this book is on Beatrix as a botantist, sadly, again, for me, as I was particular interested in learning from her sketches, drawings and paintings of animals which were few and far between in this volume. This is a nice history of her life painted in broad brush strokes with a few personal photos of her and her family as well, however, if you've seen the movie, you more or less will know all of this already. The book title should have read, "The Art of Beatrix Potter: Sketches and paintings of mushrooms, plants, and landscapes of the English countryside where she vacationed and lived." There is far too little attention given to her storybook friends in this book, such a disappointment, as that is what we love best about this famous children's author/illustrator. The few illustrations and paintings in there of these little fictional characters are breathtaking and absolutely brilliant in showing them with personalities, moods and feelings while looking rather lifelike with the exception of the adorable clothes. There is definitely room in the publishing world for a follow up book that pays homage to her story book characters with original illustrations, sketches, field studies, and paintings.
This is one of of those stories of another time about the life of Beatrix Potter. Her life with tutors and having those who fostered her artistic abilityplus her own love of nature appeared in illustrations of stories she wrote in letters to young friends. Books that stand the test of time usually don'tjust happen and as you learn about Beatrix Potter then this is true.
This is a beautiful and fascinating book. It makes me want to read all her children's books again, and I probably will.
Wonderful book, very vivid illustrations and description. Good quality of paper, colors, binding! It is definitely a valuable thing for those who love watercolor painting, Beatrix Potter, her stories and simply good books to enjoy and add to their collection.I am also grateful to the Amazon delivery service. Very fast delivery to Russia. Many and sincere thanks.
