About the Author

 LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY (1874-1942) was born in what is now New London, Prince Edward Island, and raised by her grandparents after the death of her mother when she was just two. She worked for a time as a teacher and a journalist, then wrote her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, in the evenings while caring for her grandmother. Her distinctive pieces are made using paper and ink, and then are set into a miniature theatre and photographed, giving them their unique three-dimensional quality. In this hateful age of filth and profanity, it is refreshing to read a story of how children should enjoy their youth. Love makes a much more enjoyable pastime than lust ever could. How I wish for the blessed days of old where children could be children before the days come when childish things must be put away. The Story Girl is one of my favorite characters of all times. Her cleverness, imagination and creative tellings charm the reader. The bonds of relations and friendships told over precious youth reveal innocence, humor and dear learning experiences. It was a joy to read.

I just love the old values. And the relationships are so well described. A lot of them (though not all) get better, and she tells how. I wish we all had the joys of growing our own food because it is so real. So much of our culture now is artificial. The pleasures of the young people in this book were home made and creative. Their relationships were deep and personal.

Cute continuing stories of beloved characters from the first book. I enjoyed the first book but this one had me both laughing out loud a d tearing up. Sweet, simple and somewhat inspirational.

This book carries the family through tweens and teens and young adulthood. There is a spread of ages in the family, so there are still enough kid's antics while the book starts to tell the issues older kids face moving into more adult roles, and looking outside themselves and how the fit in the larger community outside family and school. My sons enjoyed this book as well as the Story Girl, and if you enjoyed the first one, you should follow the continuation of the story.

I helped co-teach this for a ladies Bible study. I felt that the book was very repetitive...same character qualities in multiple women. A number of the women mentioned don't have a lot of information given in the Bible about them, so a lot of it seems to just be assumptions about what it might have been like for them. I'd much rather study Biblical facts.

I got this book to read for a book club with my women's group at church. I wanted to like this book, but I really didn't. I was put off a bit by a man writing all about women, but really didn't appreciate the first chapter being all about women being submissive. I'm in agreement with a biblical view of submission, but having that be the focus of the first chapter in a book on women written by a man was uncomfortable. There were several instances of this type of male focused writing, so I eventually gave up reading it.

No doubt this is one of the best book I have ever read. Our church ladies have used this for our Wednesday Night Meeting. Have learned so much new information that we had no idea about. Highly recommend this book for your Ladies Church and even for individuals to read.

This is the second book I have read from this author. This book does not disappoint. John MacArthur chooses twelve women from the Old and New Testament and does a deep study on them. He uses Scripture to back up his thoughts but adds his opinions for the reader to consider. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these women in some different ways than just the usual teaching about them.

As always I love John MacArthurs work. Perfect for growing in Christ as a woman. Pointing out the handful of women mentioned in thr Word for us; He explains things thoroughly but still is all backed by Scripture. Thank you!

This is an excellent group or personal study of how God used ordinary people to accomplish HIS extraordinary purpose, to complete His plan of Salvation, and to encourage & grow believers. Great personal introspective questions.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The author's perspective on all the women was on target and interesting. I loved his book, "Twelve Unlikely Heroes" and I was glad to find this book. A good read for all Christian women and those curious about the people of the Bible.

Great book. Very detailed and easy to read. Although some of the women in our Bible study find it a bit deep, I find it fascinating that the author can find so much information about these women. I have always liked John MacArthur and respect his narrative as being backed up with scripture but some feel he is adding too much speculation. The only negative perhaps is you cannot break the chapters into sections if you are going to answer the questions at the same time as they encompass the entire chapter. A great deal of information to cover in our 2 hour weekly study-at least for many of the chapters. If you are reading this alone or if your group does not mind buckling down to study this is a wonderful book. I would highly recommend. Received as promised from seller.

I waited in anticipation for this book, boy was I disappointed. Banchan, banchan, and more banchan. No recipes for bibim bap, soondubu chegae, denchang chegae, tteobokki, or anything really useful other than Kimchi. I was hoping for maybe a good recipe for pajeon! I only gave the book 1 star because of the pictures, but other than that this book is worthless. I mean no Kim Bap?! This book is worthless :(

I really love this cookbook! There are just enough recipes so that it's not overwhelming. The recipes are enticing, delicious, and easy to follow, and the ingredients are available anywhere there is an Asian food store, as well as in many supermarkets. I found the introduction very interesting. There is information on Korea itself--North and South, the landscape, climate, country and city life, historical influences, and Korea's food specialties, as well as a section on eating and drinking traditions. The photos are wonderful, too! The book is nearly completely vegan so it's well suited to both vegetarians and vegans.

Great book with wonderful pictures of the recipes, but a little on the small side with the amount of recipes.

I waited for this book a long time, the release date was pushed back repeatedly. The book finally arrived! I had hope that this book would offer veggy friendly main dish alternative, however it does not even had a main dish section. It has soups, side dishes, vegetables and a rice/noodle chapter. I own a about a dozen Korean cookbooks and I would not have added this to my collection if I had pre-viewed it before purchase. This cookbook does have a number of lovely photos.

I waited over a year for this book from its original release date. So I had very high hopes that this book would explore Korean vegetarian cooking. With the growing popularity of temple cuisine in Korea it should have been easy to come up with some exciting recipes. But this book was just a rehash of photos he has already published and basic recipes.

I choose this book as I was looking for a cookbook that was quick and easy to follow the directions.

Code of the Samurai is a great book that could be compared to The Art of War. The is a great read for anyone who is looking for self improvement and discipline. I highly recommend adding to your personal collection or giving as a gift.

Nice easy read. I was curious as to how samurai lived an honorable life hundreds of years ago. Application to modern day is a bit harder but none the less some core values hold true. Except for losing in battle and I quote " Handed their head over with a smile, no signs of flinching." cheers

Wonderful read, and unlike such weightier classics as THE ART OF WAR or THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS, this one is readily accessible to the western mind.After reading it twice, I came to think that everything after the first chapter -- nay, after the first two paragraphs -- was mere repetition. This is because all the behaviors and philosophies the author recommends would be the natural consequence if one truly were to "keep death in mind at every possible moment."The book is a series of short chapters like "Loyalty," "Finances," "Personal Appearance;" each describing the ideal behavior of an ideal samurai with respect to each.I can't comment on the organization or skill of Cleary's translation, though, since I know of no other version of this book. However I am inclined to think it is adept, since the nature of the work suggests the original Japanese would be extremely stiff. This is not the case with the English.Gripes:1. Note that this is a thin book; you can read it in about an hour. I was expecting something much thicker, at least the size of THE UNFETTERED MIND, say.2. Oscar Ratti's illustrations will be disappointing to those familiar with his work in SECRETS OF THE SAMURAI and AIKIDO: THE DYNAMIC SPHERE. There are only a handful of them, and that handful isn't very interesting.3. The binding of this book came apart rather quickly, after just the first read. Perhaps just my copy, though.4. Sadly, the introduction by Cleary is completely forgettable.

This book had many interesting facets, especially the history of the bouquinistes and their history in Paris. It was interesting to read the descriptions of various parts of Paris. The flavor and descriptiveness gets the three stars.There were some things I did not care for. The writing was good in the descriptive passages but the dialogue was not very developed and was almost childish sometimes. The plot was not very good. There were big problems in this book. Why does Max say that it's a domestic issue when the other bouquiniste is being hit by the thug? What man watches another man hit an old woman? What big strapping man with a gun just watches his friend get kidnapped? And worst of all is the coincidence of Hugo meeting the woman in the cafe. Absolutely not believable. Hugo acts weird with his secretary - sort of curt and rude but then calls her at all hours for information as if she existed solely for his benefit. He puts people in danger with his thoughtlessness as if he had no experience at all. I found that to be ridiculous. The friend comes all the way to Paris to help him but his character is not really developed properly. There is too much drinking and subsequent hangovers for people of this age and maturity. Every time Hugo thinks he should do the right thing he talks himself out of it for fear of losing his job. That doesn't seem heroic and yet it seems as if Hugo is supposed to be a hero. But instead Hugo is disappointing and the book ends in an implausible way.If you are prepared to suspend disbelief more than usual you will not see the flaws in this book as much. It is a mostly pleasant outing if you are not looking too hard at plot and other elements.

The first Hugo Martin mystery series begins in Paris along the Seine among the booksellers who ply their trade in their green stalls at the river's edge. The books primary character, Hugo has a passion for wonderful books and his old friend Max, one of the city's beloved booksellers whose stall overlooks the Seine -- shares his passion. Soon after Hugo buys a couple first edition books, Max is set upon by thugs and kidnapped right in front of Hugo. But no one from the french police appears to believe that Max is missing. As the head of security for the American embassy in Paris and a former FBI agent, Hugo tries to personally unravel what has happened to Max and trips into a complex hornets' nest of trouble and intrigue in his Texas two-step cowboy boots. Along the way he meets the charming and beautiful Claudia, a French reporter and resurrects a friendship with his old colleague and buddy Tom who left the FBI for the CIA a couple of decades earlier. This team, with the help of a few others, begin the difficult task of finding Max. What they discover in the charing byways of Paris and countryside of France is a very disturbing new reality for the booksellers of the city. This story is a fast moving drama with plenty of intrigue and enjoyable twists and turns ---- and a fascinating backstory regarding an old Nazi hunter (Max) turned exposer of WWII French Nazi collaborators. An armchair traveler's enjoyable read with just enough spice, wit and daring to suck the eager mystery reader into the pages of this charming new series. I hope to see what Hugo is up to in a few more of these nicely written, contemporary mysteries.

While this book, in my opinion, is not on a par with my favorite authors it does show good basics. The initial kidnapping of a supposedly good friend while he just stands by and does nothing is rather weak. The storyline bounces around a bit and I got some of the characters confused. All told I will go on to book 2 and give it one more chance to hook me on the series.

Purchased this as Whispersync through Book Gorilla.Forget the summary; it skews the timeline.Simply take Paris, American Embassy security chief on vacation,a good friend who is bookseller, rare books which are not what they seem, a reporter who is not what she seems, local cops who are not what they seem, an old friend who is CIA retired, and several murders. And be prepared to become addicted to Hugo Marsden's way of things (with plot twists).Michael Prichard does a fine job of differentiating characters and adding snark.My great disappointment is that there are no more of this series available on audio!

This was a nice mystery read. It's well written. It's not classic literature and some of it is a little far fetched, however it's a great entertainment read. It's a love letter to Paris to be sure and anyone who has been there will appreciate how the author has captured its charm. If you're looking for a hard hitting Michael Connelly, Brad Thor or David Silva type thriller, this isn't it. It's not really meant to be. It's an interesting mystery set in Paris with interesting characters. I was throughly entertained and I'm looking forward to the other books in the series.

I enjoyed The Bookseller for its window into Parisian life and for the background it provided of the bookstall owners. I've seen so many photographs of the bouquinistes, yet this is the first time I've read anything of their history. It was fascinating.Unfortunately, the rest of the book wasn't on par with its insights into Paris and one of its institutions. Having deduced what was happening to the booksellers and why very early on, I wondered how long it would take Hugo Marston to put the pieces together. Too long, as it happens. Moreover, Marston himself never really clicked as a main character for me, and neither did his friend Tom Green. Both have promise, but both lacked that indefinable spark that would bring them to life.Now that I've said all that, I will say that this is a promising debut mystery, and I am more than willing to give the next book in the series a try.

I truly enjoyed the flow of the words, the flow of the storyline, the intricate plot that keeps you guessing and all set in Paris with a dash of romance. I look forward to the next book!Nancy F.
