Discernment: Reading the Signs of Daily Life, by Henri J. M. Nouwen

Review

“A fine book that delves into the answers to questions of what a Christian should do with his/her life....Nouwen’s gifts as a writer for the spirit rarely failed, and this posthumous volume is as valuable as his other writings.” (Library Journal)“Henri Nouwen was one of the greatest spiritual masters of our time. This exciting new collection gathers together in one volume Nouwen’s wisdom about, insights on, and practice of spiritual discernment. It is, therefore, a treasure for all believers.” (James Martin, SJ, author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything)“Discernment uses Nouwen’s material to open up the way to deep listening that is both comfort and challenge. Using Nouwen’s insights allows the reader to hone a sensitivity to God alive in our midst.” (Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of NETWORK)“Henri Nouwen continues to inspire and enlighten. One gets the sense that Henri is talking directly to you, and touching you deeply. The book reads like a seamless piece of writing that on almost every page has something that enlightens the mind or touches the heart at a deep level.” (William A. Barry, S.J. coauthor of The Practice of Spiritual Direction)“Nouwen artfully explores how nature, our neighbors, and our own hearts reveal God’s active presence all around us. Life-giving and beautiful, yet practical and wise, he invites all those who doubt, feel lost, wounded or broken to discover the beating heart of love at the center of world.” (Diana Butler Bass, author of Christianity After Religion)“An absolute gift to mind and soul. Christensen and Laird have seamlessly and thematically woven a luminous tapestry of both Nouwen’s published and previously unpublished work on discernment. The result is an even richer and more accessible Nouwen than most of us have ever seen before.” (Phyllis Tickle, author of Emergence Christianity)“Henri Nouwen’s writing is mystical, heartfelt, and wonder-filled. He has helped shape a whole generation of Christianity, and his legacy is still being written. I can’t think of a better teacher on discernment. Read it, live it, and transform the world by doing small things with great love.” (Shane Claiborne, author, activist, and wounded healer)“Nouwen hits the mark with his commentary on discerning vocation, presence, identity, and time..” (Spirituality & Practice)“For most people, the very word discernment implies something heady, private, and maybe even elitist. Henri Nouwen, as always, makes seemingly complex things personal, practical, intelligent, and very readable—all at the same time! This is a rich and helpful book.” (Richard Rohr, O.F.M., author of Falling Upward)“I knew Henri Nouwen well. He possessed a unique capacity to combine genuine wisdom with winsome simplicity, and could help people look deeply into themselves. In these writings these qualities shine through, and the down-to-earth practical hints on no-nonsense spirituality will be a source of refreshment for readers.” (Harvey Cox, Hollis Research Professor of Divinity at Harvard and author of The Future of Faith)

From the Back Cover

Henri J. M. Nouwen, the world-renowned spiritual guide and counselor, understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community, and relationships. Though he counseled many people during his lifetime, his principles of spiritual direction were never written down. Now, in association with the Nouwen Legacy Trust, Michael Christensen, one of Nouwen's longtime students, and Rebecca Laird, one of Nouwen's editors, have taken his coursework, journals, and unpublished writing and created the definitive resource on spiritual discernment. Stories, readings, and thematically organized questions for reflection and guided journal writing provide an unparalleled resource for spiritual development, both for individuals and for small groups.Discernment, the third book in the series, teaches us how to read the "signs of the times" in daily life in order to make decisions that are ultimately guided by God. Nouwen emphasizes listening to the Word of God—in our hearts, in the Bible, in the community of faith, and in the voice of the poor. Nouwen's thoughts on discernment begin to answer one of the biggest questions we face: what should I do with my life?

Discernment by Henri Nouwen is at the top if not the best book on spiritual discernment I have read so far. I believe all of us would like to understand better how to discern not just God's voice in our daily lives but also the various signs and calls we sense. This book adds a much needed element to spiritual formation and following God.Preface: What This Book Is AboutDiscernment, is about reading the signs of daily life to “remember God” (memoria Dei), God’s time (kairos).Foreword: Henri’s Way of DiscernmentInstead of seeking a life free from pain and suffering, we should trust that Jesus is present in our pain and suffering. Henri believed that we can discern the depths of our lives and vocation only if we surrender our ego-centered view of reality.Discernment is a discipline and practice that requires us to cultivate trust, love, faith, hope, and courage. When we accept our complete belovedness, we stop judging ourselves and other people; as a result, other people begin to feel safe with us.Chapter One: Embracing the Practice in Solitude and CommunityIf a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.I found that my anger and my desire to be special and to be admired all bubbled up in my times of solitude. Most important is how we read— not to understand or control God, but to be understood and formed by God.Discernment grows out of the life of faith rooted in community.Discernment reveals new priorities, directions, and gifts from God.Our desire to be successful, well liked, and influential becomes increasingly less important as we come closer to God’s heart. We have the freedom to say yes to God’s call and to choose to live it in very specific ways. Thus God has a real chance to form us into lights in the darkness, a source of hope for many in the world. That, after all, is the true goal of spiritual discernment.Make a list of all the activities and desires of your heart that you believe are pleasing to God.Discernment performed alone often can become delusion. We need each other.

I picked up *Discernment* by Nouwen a few weeks ago with a dual interest: I was eager to read the next book in Nouwen's spirituality trilogy and I was beginning to experience new turbulence within my workplace which created desire for wisdom in navigation. What I received was very helpful, very formative guidance in the practice of listening. There wasn't much that was profound, per se, in Nouwen's writing this time, but this is his genius writing on discernment. Discernment isn't wisdom from the sky that enables you to connect the dots toward fulfilling your dreams. Instead, discernment is becoming awake to the Voice of God that we read recorded in the Scriptures and which speaks to us in the same way through friends, experiences, and desires - all which are things that re-member the words we've previously read from the Bible. The goal, Nouwen wrote (and I paraphrase) is to be formed in the likeness of Christ, and to thus participate in God's mission of redemption, right where God has us. So again, the practice of discernment is the practice of listening; it's more an act of submission rather than discovering the route of more control.Early on, *Discernment* writes out a theology of discernment that illumines a true intent for discernment (what I paraphrased above). The remainder of the book takes an memoir-like stroll through Henri's life as he teaches the practice of paying attention to God. These journeys are like journal entries that unpack an earlier statement in the book:"I can see no other path to discernment than to be committed to a life of unceasing prayer and contemplation, a life of deep communion with the Spirit of God. Such a life will slowly develop in us an inner sensitivity, enabling us to distinguish between the law of the flesh and the law of the Spirit." (p.24)My "take-away" from the book is the reminder that to be truly discerning of God's will and desire, one must be immersed in the words and ways of God that are most vividly revealed in the Gospels and the rest of Scripture. Familiarity with God's Voice will make it easier to hear and follow God's will and desires, things that will always end up looking like (and forming us to be like) Jesus. This means that discernment will be hard to receive through a simple trick or through a short stint of prayer, no matter how earnest. A well discerned and well lived life will be the Spirit's gift through a disciplined immersion in the Scriptures, in prayer, in community, and in the presence of the poor.[Final Note: *Discernment*, like Nouwen's *Spiritual Direction* and *Spiritual Formation* are post-humous collections of Henri's thoughts and words taken from class notes, journals, and books. Friends of his have collected these and placed them into a book format that feels quite seamless. They must have known him quite well.]

To be precise, the book's contents were collated from Nouwen's unpublished spiritual writings by Michael J. Christensen and Rebecca Laird. However, Nouwen's voice is preserved. Not all theoretical practices but Nouwen shares his own experience of discernment, of how discernment is an act in waiting (passion), of how we should first know who we are (beloved child of God) before we asked what is God's purpose for us. Nouwen is grounded in human experience and is empathetic that following Christ is not easy. However it is possible if we believe and understand that Christ is with us till the end of time. Reflection questions at the end of each chapter may not be easy pieces for everyone, but then in kairos time, we may get our answers. :-) I enjoy the three Appendices at the end of the book.

Each chapter concludes with a set of questions. Although good to read for the individual, this book seems more suitable for community, an ideal Nouwen promotes. The author's text reveals his quest for a deeper relationship with Christ and various efforts to find it. It reads in places like a diary of a late-life memoir. Nouwen quotes extensively from Merton, a little too much, I felt. He mentions many times the L'arche community in which he found his truest calling. I did find much authenticity in Nouwen's words as indicated by my many highlights.

I am so grateful to the Henri Nouwen Foundation and those people who had the privilege of perusing Nouwen's journals, lecture notes, and previous publications to provide us with this delightful and useful book. It isn't a quick read; I've not yet finished it because I want to savor the words and ideas. This book gives evidence that the influence of Henri Nouwen lives beyond his earthly life!

My introduction to Ron Baker was through a four-part webinar series, of the same title, sponsored by Intuit Inc. It was not your typical webinar in the sense that Ron went way beyond any normal expectation in staying and answering the participants questions after the normal end. He was very gracious and detailed in all of his explanations and I suspect that his giving mentality is carried over into all of his consulting and business encounters. This is exactly what you will receive when reading this book. Actually, I didn't just read this book... I thought my way through all 335 pages and probably marked up almost every page! Ron gives you the "why," the theory, behind all the "how to" which allows the reader to build their own foundation in restructuring their own business model. We are talking about going from the model where you are selling time to a model where you are giving the client the freedom to placing a value on the outcome of what they will receive from you. This is radical... and it will allow the opportunity to make greater profits than anything that is time based. In fact, your old billable hour becomes the "floor" and not the "ceiling" on any of your new engagements. If you are serious about making an impact in the businesses and lives of your clients then the antiquated "billable-hour" and the "time-sheets" have to go out of your thinking! If any of you hesitated or had to re-read this last sentence then get this book and convince yourself that this radically different approach to doing business is something that you should have done a long time ago. You are no longer a Professional Service Firm, selling services and time, you are now a Professional Knowledge Firm, creating "value" for your customers and giving them an upfront fixed price that they can count on and budget for.In every transaction you have to consider three things: costs, price, and value delivered. No customer will ever care about your costs! Then consider that your customer is determined to get the lowest price for your services, while you are striving to get the highest price possible, so there is no common ground here. The only area where there is common ground is in value delivered. Both you and your customer are striving, in the same direction, to achieve the best value out of that transaction! If you desire to become a master at squeezing every ounce of value out of your engagements then it would be a serious mistake to forfeit learning what Ron Baker has to share in this book.Your clients will be so filled with gratitude that they will not have any reason to look elsewhere because no one listens as well or solves their problems like you do, at a price that they are more than willing to pay!

Not that this book needs another five star review, but I have a reason for chiming in. I was reading Ron's books starting around 2005 or so, and while I loved the way they made me think about everything. After writing five books that I know of, Ron produced this work, which summarizes everything from previous books and offers a hands-on approach to his value pricing model. Now, Ron is an accountant. This means you have to be able to think about what he is saying in your own context. He cannot give you your context, only his own. This doesn't make what he says any less useful in any professional service. The idea of value creation as a measure of company plus customer profit, and how to apply this concept to define price, is applicable to anyone who uses their brain to make money. And there are many ways to think of a fabrication company as a professional service provider, so no one is entirely excluded.Another selling point for this book is that this is where the nuts-and-bolts of value pricing ended up after all revisions of The Professional's Guide to Value Pricing went out of print. So if you missed that one entirely, if you're new to Ron's work, or if you're a professional looking to radically rethink how you and your company create value, get this book.

On a trip to China I had the opportunity to read from start to finish Ron Baker's Implementing Value Pricing book. Early on, as I read each page, I got the sensation that "I hope this book doesn't end!" The "theories" outlined in this prose are radical and very intelligently conveyed, allowing the reader to grasp these concepts in a methodical manner. As a person with a CI (continuous improvement) ideology of how to approach business (and life), I was enamored with the blend of rational and sensible concepts as delivered by Mr. Baker. Pricing time indeed makes no sense. It is NOT what the customer demands. The Customer demands service and results. Providing a Customer a price up front is respectful and professional. We want them to call us to help them with their needs, not worry about that sinking feeling of calling my advisor and watching the clock.Beyond that, tracking time is wasteful (highly against CI principals). It is inexact and therefore meaningless. As Ron shared with me, we already know our cost. Can't we be smart enough to build a business model that ensures a healthy profit. If we can't, we are in the wrong business. I've just started a new Outsourced Accounting Business. Our goal is to make our value proposition (at premium prices) so that our Customers see us as a necessity in their business and highly dependent on the value we bring to the table. I can assure you I will read this book at least 2 more times. It's like a great movie, you'll catch other insights the more you watch (read) it!I cannot praise Ron enough for delivering to us in the "professions" a mantra of which to follow as we forge forward helping our Customers succeed!Thank you again, Ron.

What a thorough, logical, thought-provoking read. The book takes you through a useful, logical path of reasoning: defining the problem with hourly billing (even considering the positives and the history behind it), why consumers buy anything, and replaces your current knowledge of what you believe is possible with pricing a customer based on services and gives you tools, processes, ideas, and case studies to help you visualize and reason through / unlearn what you currently know about time-sheets. I've never left a review before, but this book calls for it - I would say as a CPA that this should be required reading, at least so you can affirm your beliefs of what you are offering or can offer your clients. It's a wake-up call the industry needs. I had never read a Ron Baker book before, but I'm sold on his ability to provide careful, sound reasoning behind his arguments. Well worth the time and investment.

For those of us who eat low carb this book is a great asset in your kitchen. There are so many good recipes here and I'm making some great meals from it. Yesterday I made the eggnog (cooked version), it was outstanding. I also made the oatmeal cookies, sooooo good. I was just perusing the Asian chicken salad recipe.... You'll find breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes and you'll appreciate this is not labor nor time intensive with no sacrifice in flavor. I am especially intrigued by the "bread" section and will be trying some recipes soon. I have tried the keto bread recipes (too eggy) and THM's version too (their "white" bread. Understanding it's not going to be like wheat bread, just want something that has good texture and flavor. So my overall take, this is a real gem. I'm so glad I "rediscovered" this book.

I learned in my early 20s (I'm 65) that very low carb approach results in losing gobs of weight. Why I forgot that, I'll never know. Anyway, after losing about 80 lbs wasting with an illness and gaining 40 of that back lickety split when I got better, I really hated having the weight back on. This cookbook looked like a helpful bet. Well, it is so far beyond helpful!!! Dana Carpenter has an easy, chatty style that is strong on clarity. She understands there are multiple plans out there (Atkins, Paleo, etc.) as well as those who are just cutting out carbs. She has clear explanations on handling of various issues, including milk and yogurt and lots of recipes not just for soup to nuts, but for the condiments to go with them!! If you hand me a "diet" or a specific "program", it's not going to happen. But if you say, "here are guidelines with the whys and wherefores", I do really well. OK, with 500 recipes, I will be trying new things for months and leaving out a few things (I really don't like spaghetti squash). There is enough in this book to keep everyone happy and full! If you are going low carb/no carb, I cannot urge you too highly to get this cookbook. For those of us who are clearly intolerant to carbohydrates and have to change our whole way of eating to achieve healthy weights and blood sugars, this book is both practical and emotionally satisfying--she leaves you knowing you can do this! One or two other remarks: she is wise to warn you away from margarine (ALL of them)and the heavily processed oils (corn, vegetable, canola) and to suggest some much safer ones. FDA allows the food industry to report trans fats BEFORE processing. Then they strip and process the oils with chemicals, which can never be fully removed, and high heats. The result is that, for example, the canola oil on your grocery shelf is as much as 40% trans fats. I personally won't use any artificial sweeteners especially aspartame (which she doesn't touch), but there is stevia that measures the same as sugar and is easy to use and available in bulk in the grocery.

This book is loaded with great recipes, but for me the recipe for low carb white bread is worth the whole price. I have made two one-pound loaves and two two-pound loaves and they were all perfect. At only 4 carbs per 43.5 g. slice it toasts up beautifully and it allows me to have a slice of toast with my morning egg, which I just can't look forward to without toast. Even better, that slice has over 20 g. of protein which nutritionists are now saying is crucial for effective weight loss and craving control. I find that a 35g. slice is more than enough of a serving for me because it is definitely more satsifying than regular bread.

I tried low-carb dieting about 10 years ago, and although it worked, I simply couldn't live on bacon and eggs and the like, as a regular diet. The research on low-carb has come a long way. Vitamin and mineral supplements, inclusion of vegetables during induction, and a thousand pieces of information were not obvious or known, in the revolutionary discovery of carbohydrates making you fat, and not fat making you fat.One of the most important things that kept me away from trying low-carb again, was that I love to eat. I love to cook. I love the creative aspect of dining. Well, for people who feel like I do, do not hesitate to try one more time. We now know so much more about the low-carb lifestyle. We know what is lacking, and we know what to expect. As well, there are many new products out in the market that give us safe, effective and tasty alternative that simply didn't exist 10 years ago. This book will introduce you to these alternative, as well as offer any professional or amateur chef the fun of creative new foods that not only appease what you no longer can have, but often surpass them so much that you wonder why you settled for such 'ordinary' food before.I love the recipes in this book, not only because they appeal to the creative side of dining, but because after a while you catch on to the tricks of converting regular recipes into low-carb, so that there is virtually nothing that you cannot have.I highly recommend this book.

I've made at least fifty of the recipes in Carpender's book, from main courses to desserts. All of them were very mediocre, and some were downright bad. I don't know if there were typos as far as the amount of ingredients goes, or if Carpender's taste buds have been ruined by eight years of low-carbing. Many concoctions simply needed to be thrown away, and I'm not a novice cook. I'm a very good cook, and perhaps that is the problem: I expect my food to taste good, and I'm willing to spend the time and effort to do it. Many of the recipes consisted of two ingredients, such as a meat and salt. That's not a recipe, that's a serving suggestion. If you want low-carb with flavor, I suggest one of George Stella's books, or even Donna Pliner Rodnitzky's books. These people are obviously good cooks and have many wonderful recipes to share.

I admit that I chose to obtain this audiobook What I Know For Sure by Oprah Winfrey because of the multiple positive reviews. Oprah gets candid on how her history shaped her upbringing including the emotional pain that she carried with her family history and her true feelings when one of her family members revealed what was then a major secret about her. With relief, she narrated that Graham Stedman was there to comfort her and much more. I also found it healing that she emphasizes that every challenging moment has a silver lining and that your greatest challenge/struggle can produce your greatest strength and more information.

Great Book. Great Timing.I just got free from a very long, bad relationship. Packed my stuff and grabbed my dog. Rented a UHaul and headed across the country to start new again. (I am 63yrs). Bought this Audio book to listen to as I drive.I felt all the old yuck stuff leave, and the new stuff flowing in... There is so much inspiration.Perfect book for anyone wanting to find joy and a better look at living. Will listen to it many more times. Sue

I bought this book after reading amazing reviews about it on Amazon. I really wanted to like this book, but it was just a bunch of small stories..........But I already read so many blogs/articles with similar stories that I just could not find anything new. I couldn't finish the book beyond the first 30% of it.

This book, I bought it as a gift for a loved one, but ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. It's not just a book, but a keepsake-one that you can revisit again and again. It's beautifully made too, which seems to be an Oprah book trademark. It'll stand the test of time in both its physical craftsmanship as well as the jewels of contents within.

This book has become a staple in our household that I have gifted, and re-gifted to so many people! If you are interested, the audio version of the book if read by Oprah herself, and gives you a different take on what she's emphasizing through each lesson.I recommend you read this book one lesson at a time and keep re-reading it for a few days until you've caught on to what she's trying to teach. That way you can really internalize the book and enjoy it throughout the entire year.I love it so much, that it has become a routine to read this book at least once a year and it's cheaper on Amazon then anywhere else I've been able to find so far.

This book has some wonderful advice of self-acceptance, knowing you are worth and how to share your kindness to others. Her voice and timing felt as though you were talking to an old friend that was passing on their wisdom. While the end of the book I felt was a bit repetitive it really drives homes the point and you cannot control the world around you but in this moment and this time you can decide on what truly will make your heart full of love by trusting your instincts and allowing time for yourself.

The advise seems too simplistic. I did appreciate her telling about her background. She seems to realize that she is not perfect and she is "speaking " to people who have many imperfections too. I admire her very much and know she helps people of all races and conditions. Her advice affects us all.

I will recommend this book to everyone in my life. I will purchase this book for all the women in my life. I gave this book review 5 stars because it touched on every major point in my life the very belief I held in my heart that took me to the other side of the challenges this book confirmed my heart was on the right path. At all times-during those situations I looked within for the answers and my heart has never failed to protect me. Oprah inspires me to continue on my path and step it up a notch or more. At 53 I removed myself from a 13 year relationship and struggled with at my age a chance to love again is over. Today is six months since I asked him to leave. I now know without a doubt my life is just getting started. This was the perfect book to read and inspire me to continue on with all that I am. I do know this that we are not here to be loved it is to love others - along the way if love finds us as it will, it's a bonus. I realized when I left the love for myself was greater than that dysfunctional relationship. I wake up each day in wonder and an open heart because that is just who I am and I love every fiber of me. Thank you Oprah for the confirmation that my path is mine to create and if a situation doesn't align with all that I am it's ok to walk away.

What I know for sure is that Oprah wrote a fine book. It's a series of short essays with the theme of what Oprah knows for sure. She sometimes tells how she got there. It's wonderful. I feel better having just read it.It's a pretty book. One made for keeping forever or giving as a gift. After reading just part way I sent a copy to my grown daughters. I hope they love it as much as I do.

Terry Tempest Williams has written a memoir that functions on multiple levels. It is about a number of things that run parallel and seem unrelated, until Williams pulls together all of the threads to present readers with a gorgeous narrative fabric. She lets readers see the stitching, so anyone who thinks that a writer’s work should be both seamless and invisible will not find what they’re looking for here.Williams chronicles the year that the Great Salt Lake threatened to overflow its banks, which would have caused enormous damage to the bird sanctuaries along its shores. Each chapter is named after a different bird that frequents Great Salt Lake’s ecosystem, and alternating chapters detail what is happening in the environment. The other chapters are about Williams’ mother and grandmother, both of whom develop reproductive cancers in the time she is writing about. As Mormons, the women in her family have been raised to put family first, and to assume certain positions both within their families and their church, but to not overstep their bounds. As the impact of the cancers changes the structure of Williams’ family, she writes about how these changes create new roles and lead for a need for a refuge for this “clan of one-breasted women.”As she documents, the lake’s overflowing boundaries, the reproductive cancers, and the way that land in the West has been treated by the U.S. government since its colonization by settlers and the destruction of those indigenous peoples who had inhabited it, are all connected. She shows readers the historical evidence, and as a naturalist, she writes with great authority about what is happening to the land. For some reason, certain readers are offended by this book. But if the idea that women are equal, as citizens and as human beings, is NOT an issue for you, this book is the story of revelation. If you think women are inferior beings, you’ll have to decide whether you’re willing to read a book that might challenge your views.

Read this 15 years ago and just bought for a friend and reread parts. Interesting to read some of the negative reviews as this book has no negatives to it. I have given a couple copies to family members of dying patients over the years with great results. You don't have to be dying or have a dying friend to love this. It transposes nature and its cycles with human life and death in a way no other book has done. It is certainly not a book that is a page turner with an evolving plot. It is a book to be savored and reread, something like The Outermost House, quietly read and felt, and it is in that lofty a category.

I first read this book after a dear friend passed away from ALS. It's such a humanistic story, and yet a story of Planet Earth and the ecosystem and our place, as human beings, in the order of nature.Yes, the author is Mormon, but she isn't preaching her religion. Rather, she takes a nondenominational and spiritual approach. Her love of nature and wildlife shines through the book, and I related to her analogies about the shrinking wetlands and loss of wildlife habitat.I found this book profoundly moving, and when my sister-in-law's mother was diagnosed with cancer, I bought it for her.I can't recommend this book highly enough. It can be comforting to those who fear illness, and also to those who seek a greater understanding of spirituality and the natural world.

This is a remarkable book, and well deserves its reputation. Williams juxtaposes her mother’s death by cancer with a dying wildlife refuge as the Great Salt Lake floods. While doing so, she manages to play the characteristics of specific bird species against what is going on in her family’s lives. It could easily be done poorly - but oh! she can write. It’s a hard book, especially if you’ve watched someone die slowly. But it’s a beautiful book, too.

I read this book for a class but connected to it strongly. I gave it as a gift to my mother in the hope it may be interesting to her in the aftermath of similar life situations to Williams.

Gut wrenching and emotionally evocative book. Beautifully written narrative weaves stories of nature with the overall plot.

This book was incredible. I read it as part of a university course and it's still on my shelf. Wonderful story of dealing with loss. I recommend this book to everyone!

This is one of the most beautiful stories I have read to date. The way Terry Tempest Williams describes nature, her emotions, and her mother's cancer is breathtaking.

Under Bernanke’s chairmanship, the Fed, whatever its pre-crisis mistakes, helped save the U.S. and the world from a disaster. Humanity should be grateful.” - Martin Wolf, The Financial Times

I think it's a VERY good book, however, I just want to get you all "heads up" that it can be somewhat textbookish. Dr. Bernanke is very very smart and he has sooo much information--and it would be a good idea to keep a dictionary handy (ha, ha)! I still haven't finished the third chapter yet bec ause a lot of this is new information to me and I'm wanting to kind of take this stuff slower and give myself more time to absorb it--it's college classroom material but I do really like it and it is really very interesting. I don't know how long it's going to take me to get through this book but I do really like it--I do think it is VERY interesting.

While this book is partly about economics, there is a substantial infusion of political science, sociology and psychology. Unlike the silo, one needs a broad, range of understanding to deal with the problems. Leadership is important, in the social sciences one can't reduce things to an equation. One needs a panel of people to arrive at effective decisions. Bernanke used his committees well, and was a major reason why we weren't in worse trouble than we were. In a way, it also sheds light on what is wanting in graduate education, where there is little attempt to foster broad ranges of understanding so that the problems can be dealt with.

If you've ever been curious what it would be like to be in the chair of the Federal Reserve during a crisis, then this is the book for you. If you can't read through hundreds of pages of dry academic writing and data analysis, then it's probably not. I consider myself a finance nerd, but struggled getting through some parts of it. The summary is that the world economy almost went off a cliff, but Helicopter Ben (he hates that name) pulled the right levers to save us all. We learned a lot about how markets and economies react to new types of stimulus during these years, and various presidents claimed credit for saving the economy when, in reality, it was the Fed who probably deserved most of the credit. I'd say it's a book most people should read, but let's be honest -- most people won't understand it, or care enough to invest the time into cracking such a thick book. I was glad I got through it though, and was even more appreciative for the job that Bernanke did while Fed Chair once I knew the behind-the-scenes details.

I bought this book because I worked for the FDIC at one point and was interested in the changes in the banking industry as a whole. I found this book to be very interesting. In terms of Bernackes knowledge but the subject, in general, can be boring depending on your interest. If your looking for the history of our banking system you will enjoy this book. Or perhaps Bernackes personal story you will probably enjoy it.

very interesting read. Sure give a sense of some of the inner working of the Fed at the time of crisis. Also shows that the decisions were not easy to make and that some actions went against natural inclinations, but had to be made because doing so could have harned the US and world economies much more. I had no idea how much help and potential help the FED played helping Europe as well. Great read for people that wondered what went on and how stressful it was not only do something, but to do the right thing.

Very thorough, in-depth account of what led up to the credit crisis, actions taken by the Fed to avert a more significant financial crisis and changes put in place to avert a recurrence. The insights on those personally involved were particularly interesting as were the interrelationships of the myriad of financial organizations - - - this got a bit too detailed but was nonetheless informative.

Ben Bernanke saved the United States and possibly the world from a devastating Second Great Depression. He along with Hank Paulson and Tim Geithner kept our economy afloat. Their pictures should be on our $20, $50 and $100 dollar bills because if they had not intervened, we would have descended into chaos, killing each other and bartering with meager food grown on our lawns.

A fairly dry, but very important book by the man at the helm of the Fed during the "great recession." Bernanke does not give us a book where shots are delivered to those who may be have been policy opponents within government, but he does manage to get his points across diplomatically. As the financial system teetered many complex and politically difficult decisions were thrust upon Washington policy makers from both the Bush and Obama Administrations. Those decisions are still debated today. Bernanke gives us his view on those decisions, and the facts on the ground that may have led, in certain instances, to decisions that were sub-optimum, or just plain wrong.Bernanke gets to some of the big decisions of the day, including the decision to let Lehman fail. The entire "bailout" of Wall Street issue is gone over, with Bernanke giving, as much as can be expected, a dispassionate analysis of why decisions were made, and what the ramifications might have been had alternative policies been adopted. Not being an economist I looked for his views on several issues that remain controversial to this day, including Lehman, the bailouts, especially the AIG bailout, the right "medicine" for an economy in a major recession. As mentioned Bernanke is diplomatic, except when it comes to the disdain he shows for the Washington political class from both Parties. The "play-acting" in the middle of a crisis, the politics first mentality of a large segment of the elected officials he had to deal with, and the flat out lack of shame or truth by these elected officials is called out by Bernanke. He defends the bailouts as necessary, but recognizes the "moral hazard" inherent in those decisions."Some of the critics were ideologues (the free market is always right) or uninformed (the economy will be just fine if a few Wall Street firms get their just deserts). Some simply railed against the unfairness of bailing out Wall Street giants but not the little guy on Main Street. Personally, I felt considerable sympathy for this last argument. (I would wince every time I saw a bumper sticker reading “Where’s my bailout?”) But it was in everyone’s interest, whether or not they realized it, to protect the economy from the consequences of a catastrophic failure of the financial system. The opponents’ most substantive argument was that, whatever the short-run benefits of bailouts, protecting firms from the consequences of their own risky behavior would lead to riskier behavior in the longer run. I certainly agreed that, in a capitalist system, the market must be allowed to discipline individuals or firms that make bad decisions. Frank Borman, the former astronaut who became CEO of Eastern Airlines (which went bankrupt), put it nicely a quarter-century earlier: “Capitalism without bankruptcy is like Christianity without hell.” But in September 2008 I was absolutely convinced that invoking moral hazard in the middle of a major financial crisis was misguided and dangerous. I am sure that Paulson and Geithner agreed. " “You have a neighbor, who smokes in bed. . . . Suppose he sets fire to his house,” I would say later in an interview. “You might say to yourself . . . ‘I’m not gonna call the fire department. Let his house burn down. It’s fine with me.’ But then, of course, what if your house is made of wood? And it’s right next door to his house? What if the whole town is made of wood?” The editorial writers of the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal in September 2008 would, presumably, have argued for letting the fire burn. Saving the sleepy smoker would only encourage others to smoke in bed. But a much better course is to put out the fire, then punish the smoker, and, if necessary, make and enforce new rules to promote fire safety. The firefighting argument applied equally well to LehmanBernanke, Ben S. (2015-10-05). The Courage to Act: A Memoir of a Crisis and Its Aftermath (Kindle Locations 3874-3880). W. W. Norton & Company. Kindle Edition.Despite the ferocious nature of the debate, nobody, in my view, has been able to puncture this argument. His disdain for Congress comes through clearly, in several instances:Bernanke here gives a backhanded slap, but focuses on some who would prefer to let the fire rage unabated, with the desire to let the "market" handle it all, with bad players being punished, along with everyone else, for their poor actions."Tim, in particular, complained about the “Old Testament” attitude of politicians who seemed more interested in inflicting punishment than in avoiding impending disaster. We were fine with bad actors getting their just deserts, but we believed it was better to postpone the verdict on blame and guilt until the fire was out. I had also over the years seen a great deal of feigned outrage in Washington, and I didn’t feel like playing that game."That "Old Testament" attitude keeps coming through again and again, and still manifests itself every time there is a debt crisis. We heard it loud and clear during the Greek debt crisis, when the desire to 'punish" the Greeks for poor fiscal practices outweighed the practical steps needed to solve the problem.Bernanke does deal with the outrageous demands for austerity in the face of a precipitous drop in demand, and like most folks with a modicum of common sense he calls out those folks who have been proven wrong from the get go. What were they wrong about? The predictions of:Currency debasementRunaway inflationAusterity being the right "medicine" in the face of a massive recession.Although Bernanke is a Republican, appointed by a Republican President, he takes on the "know nothing" wing of the Party with gusto. His comments even drew a rebuke from Rand Paul during one of the 2015 GOP debates. What did he say?"These and a few other exceptions notwithstanding, the increasing hostility of Republicans to the Fed and to me personally troubled me, particularly since I had been appointed by a Republican president who had supported our actions during the crisis. I tried to listen carefully and accept thoughtful criticisms. But it seemed to me that the crisis had helped to radicalize large parts of the Republican Party. The late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York once said that everyone is entitled to his own opinion but not his own facts. Some Republicans, particularly on the far right, increasingly did not draw the distinction. They blamed the crisis on the Fed and on Fannie and Freddie, with little regard for the manifest failings of the private sector, other regulators, or, most especially, of Congress itself. They condemned bailouts as giveaways of taxpayer money without considering the broader economic consequences of the collapse of systemically important firms. They saw inflation where it did not exist and, when the official data did not bear out their predictions, invoked conspiracy theories. They denied that monetary or fiscal policy could support job growth, while still working to direct federal spending to their own districts. They advocated discredited monetary systems, like the gold standard. For me, these positions pushed the party further away from the mainstream and from traditional Republican views. I still considered myself a conservative. I believed in the importance of personal autonomy and responsibility and agreed that market economies were best for generating economic growth and improving economic welfare. But I had lost patience with Republicans’ susceptibility to the know-nothing-ism of the far right. I didn’t leave the Republican Party. I felt that the party left me."Important critiques which continue to be borne out. Wrong about inflation? Claim the books are cooked. Conspiracy theories abound from those who have made error, but refuse to admit they were wrong. Easier to cite wild conspiracy theories.Bernanke also weighs in on QE1 and QE2, and takes on those who criticized the Fed for the easing. Looking back on the program gives us today a clear picture of whether the Fed made the right moves, or whether the critics were right. From my perspective Bernanke comes out with the better of the argument, as the doom predicted by the critics just failed to materialize. An open letter to the Fed, signed by a group of conservative economists in 2010, said...."The planned asset purchases risk currency debasement and inflation, and we do not think they will achieve the Fed's objective of promoting employment." Wrong again. Bernanke took them on directly:"The economic logic underlying all three—the cartoon, the letter from the congressional Republicans, and the economists’ missive—was misguided and inaccurate. In particular, there was virtually zero risk that our policies would lead to significant inflation or “currency debasement” (a loaded term for a sharp decline in the value of the dollar). That idea was linked to a perception that the Fed paid for securities by printing wheelbarrows of money. But contrary to what is sometimes said (and I said it once or twice myself, unfortunately, in oversimplified explanations), our policies did not involve printing money—neither literally, when referring to cash, nor even metaphorically, when referring to other forms of money such as checking accounts. The amount of currency in circulation is determined by how much cash people want to hold (the demand goes up around Christmas shopping time, for example) and is not affected by the Fed’s securities purchases. Instead, the Fed pays for securities by creating reserves in the banking system. In a weak economy, like the one we were experiencing, those reserves simply lie fallow and they don’t serve as “money” in the common sense of the word.""If growth in money and credit became excessive, it would eventually result in inflation, but we could avoid that by unwinding our easy-money policies at the appropriate time. And, as I had explained on many occasions, we had the tools we needed to raise rates and tighten monetary policy when needed. The fears of hyperinflation or a collapse of the dollar were consequently quite exaggerated. Market indicators of inflation expectations—including the fact that the U.S. government was able to borrow long-term at very low interest rates—showed that investors had great confidence in the Fed’s ability to keep inflation low. Our concern, if anything, was to get inflation a little higher, which was proving difficult to accomplish."Bernanke remains a conservative, but shows that the "know-nothing" wing of the GOP could have done some real damage had their policies been enacted. Bernanke took some slings and arrows from the left, and criticizes Krugman specifically for some unfair criticism. But he is a student of Keynes, and of the Great Depression, where Hooverism and the fear of inflation had such a damaging impact on our ability to recover from disaster."As new (and old) Keynesians would predict, collapsing private demand—consumer spending, home purchases, capital investment—had sent production and employment reeling. As Keynes had first suggested in the 1930s, in an economic slump public spending could replace private spending for a time. With the economy still in free fall and with short-term interest rates already near zero, the economy certainly needed fiscal help—increased government spending, tax cuts to promote private spending, or both. I had said so (albeit in my usual cautious central bank speak) during the fall, to the point that the Wall Street Journal editorialized that I had effectively endorsed Obama for president. I wasn’t endorsing a candidate, I was endorsing a program, just as I had supported President Bush’s fiscal stimulus (in the form of tax cuts) that had passed in early 2008. On February 17, less than a month after his inauguration, Obama signed a major fiscal package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009."Bernanke has written a fine book that is balanced, thoughtful, and will give readers, trained in economics or not, a valuable historical perspective on the actions undertaken by the Federal Reserve in response to the Great Recession. It is well worth a read.

This book is awesome! It’s everything you need to know about simple Shibori styles. It’s awesome and small enough so I don’t feel overwhelmed with info. Perfect.

This book was much more about the projects and the sewing with not very much in depth abut indigo and how to make patterns etc. Not what I was hoping for. If you like to be guided to make a specific thing, it would be useful.

I made some cool pillow cases and it was fun. I'll get back into creating things after the holidays.

Good item, enjoyed met expectations
